The hike to Upheaval Dome (UD) is a 1.7 mile round trip if both stops are visited. Once again, barren rock formations present a wonder to behold. Desolation is beautiful as long as you have food and water and a warm place to sleep!

How this place was formed is still debated. Either the collapse of a salt dome or the eroded remnant of a meteor strike. Check it out online.

However it was created, this short "moderate" hike rewards you with 2 different views of UD. The walk is certainly worth the effort. This place is also in the vicinity of "Whale Rock" which should also be explored. There are restroom facilities and picnic areas here as well.

The upheaval Dome feature is one of the major interesting features in Canyonlands NP. There is rim outlook and a short hike to the feature. It is well worth a short stop and loop as you drive through the Canyonlands NP.

Anyone couldn't obtain how arrived this geological feature, even the scientists. For visitors most interesting see it, look and fill the strong of nature forces created this crater million years ago. It worse to see it!. The crater, the color sands, the rocks and cliffs and the dome inside the crater. It is clearly seen already from first view point, and not difficult to reach. The second view point is more far, but always possible finish trail in same intermediate point and return - there a lot of cosmic landscapes due walking.

The hike from the parking lot to the first view point involves a number of uneven steep steps and walking on uneven rocks. We arrived here later in the day and found the walk quite tiring in the heat.

Upheaval Dome is a popular area within Canyonlands National Park where visitors are treated to a range of short and longer hikes and nice viewpoints into what is a genuinely unique geological land formation.

Visitors can reach the Upheaval Dome area at the end of the Upheaval Dome Road after turning off Grandview Point Road in the Island of the Sky section of the NP. From the Upheaval carpark area, there are short hike opportunities to viewpoints into the Upheaval Dome.

From here you can peer into what is most likely a meteorite impact. Interestingly, it is also debated that this might be a salt dome uplift. Evidence for the later comes from the colourful sediment and earth layers which can be seen at this location.

You can view Upheaval Dome well from the 1st and 2nd Crater Overlooks. You can also make your way along the longer Syncline Loop Trail which circles Upheaval Dome and then descends into the crater floor.

The landscape at Upheaval Dome is dramatic and remarkable. The entire area is highly photogenic and easy to appreciate for its unique geological makeup and pure beauty.

Overall, we really enjoyed the short and relatively easy hike to the two Crater Overlooks. This was a nice way to spend an hour in the morning before larger crowds had arrived. We were mostly on our own with only a few other hikers spotted during our visit. During future visits we would try to make time for the longer Syncline Loop Trail to take in more of the Upheaval Dome area.
