“A journey Inspired by Herman Melville.....Whale Rock (WR) is worth a visit........”
Review of Whale Rock

Reviewed August 3, 2017

WR, is a large sandstone formation accessible via a 1 mile (round trip) walk over an easily negotiated trail. A parking area at the head of track allows a convenient staging area. Follow the cairns. This route will take you to the tail of the whale. From that point it is an easy and scenic ascent along the tail allowing a grand panoramic view of "Upheaval Dome" and more.

I have written this before in previous reviews so forgive me when I declare the stark landscape on display here a wonder to behold. Canyonlands is well worth a day or 2.

The main advantage of this attraction is that it is very smooth in different from other NP rocks and easy reachable. It is not problem climb on this rock massive, without any special equipment, only with appropriate footwear. Could be attraction for all family. The rock summit provides far view to endless stone canyons of NP.

Whale Rock is a large sandstone dome in the Island in the Sky District near the end of the road to Upheaval Dome that looks a bit like the profile of a whale from the road. On the north side of the road there is a small parking lot for the trailhead of the approximately 1 mile (1.6k) roundtrip trail that climb 140 feet (42.7m) to the top of the rock where there are excellent 360 degree views of the Island of the Sky and beyond.

While the views are excellent nearly anytime of the day, as the trail is completely exposed, hiking it in the morning before the heat of the day builds is generally the best time. When one starts out on the trial, it appears at first as one will be faced with a steep climb to the top but the trail loops around to the backside and climbs rather gradually. Once at the top, one gets views of the Island Mesa and La Sal Mountains to the east, Trail Canyon to the North, Upheaval Dome and Canyon to the west with the Henry Mountains peaking above on clear days, and to the south, Candlestick Tower then Ekker and Elaterite buttes and finally the rock jumbles of the Maze District.

This place isn't far from Upheval Dome and its a nice short hike that rewards you with some great views from the top. When you take a moment to look at the rock you really can see why they call it Whale Rock. Taking the hike up to the top gives you a nice view of the park and the vast amount of space that it consumes.

Whale Rock is a large dome formation on the road to Upheaval Dome. It is a 1 mile return walk up the slick rock backbone of the dome. The total elevation change is about 100 feet, so it is not a particularly difficult hike, but is well worth the effort for the great views at the top over the Green River. There is a small parking lot at the base where the trailhead starts. When I was there a family was having a picnic at the top of the rock. Great place for it.
A nice little diversion
