We had high hopes going to the Crater Lake in late August of 2017. What a disappointment. Wire fires started in late July, and got worse by late August. From the attached photos, you can tell there was not much to see near or at the Crater Lake. I asked several local people on separate occasions. They all told me that summertime IS the fire season. There will be smoky days every one or two years. Local people get to see the nice views when the weather is good. But for visitors like us, we were there just two days. We could have shifted the two days to somewhere else. Make sure you check the web cams on the nps website before you go.

As the driver, the rim drive isn't particularly good. There are several hikes with lake views, which are a much better way to spend your time.

Currently, there is work on the western portion of the rim, so delays are in, and that you can't win. The eastern rim is thrice as lengthy or so, but that may be the way to go. In either case, there is plenty of scenery to admire, though the lake is the gem to which you aspire. You'll remember this one!

You need to stop at the pull-outs to get the views, which is a good thing to help make driving safer. The views can be beautiful as evidenced by the many photos that I've seen. Unfortunately in late August 2017, the several forest fires have made the crater so smoky that the far side of the lake is not even visible. I hope to return in the Springtime when I can see more clearly and hopefully with some snow on the hills.

On the day we visted few days ago there were 3 fires raging in the extended park area and as such there was heavy smoke blocking a clear distant view and couldn't see the lovely blue colour water it is so famous for. As such entry was free but I'd rather have paid and got to see it all. Ah well, nature nurtures.
