Took the East Rim drive. Several beautiful lookout points including ghost ship. The drive is not for the faint of heart. Many curves with no guardrails along rim road.

We spent Sept 26-28 at Crater Lake staying at the lodge. The weather was so beautiful that even the staff were commenting they couldn't remember better visibility and lake color. But we were lucky. Only a few weeks before the smoke from forest fires, not to mention 100 degree heat, was spoiling people's experience. Most of us have to plan to get to Crater Lake so it is hard to rush up when you hear the weather is good! West Rim Drive was closed to cars, but the Trolley tours, which leave every 90 minutes or so, were allowed to travel the whole rim. I highly recommend the Trolleys, which stop often for viewing and photo ops, because the driving can be stressful as others have noted. But the lake (on the right day) is so beautiful. A little snow was left from the storm of the previous week to add a glistening effect.

The west side of the rim drive was torn up and very slow in August, 2017. Check to see if more road construction is planned. Smoke from forest fires made it very difficult to see the lake. Definitely the wrong year for a visit.z

Don't just stop at the visitors center and then run off. Take the time to drive around the lake -- every vantage point is different (and every one is scenic).

We were lucky to have missed the forest fires, but arrived right after a heavy snow that closed the rim drives in both directions on the first day we were there. Luckily, they'd opened the East Rim the next day, and let me tell you, it was amazing. If you can, go when there's some snow on the ground (at least a little) because it made everything so beautiful. It did make walking some of the trails problematic, because of the compacting snow, but even if you never got out of your car and just took pictures out your window, there are tons of pullouts that put you right at the edge of the caldera. Fantastic! Do be aware that dogs are not allowed on trails, although you can bring them in your car and let them out at the visitor center, Rim Village, and in parking lots.
