“Walk this trail.”
Reviewed 16 February 2012

If you can, walk this trail. You see more than you ever can on the bus. It is well worth the effort, even in the rain.

“Great low-season rim hike!”
Reviewed 21 January 2012

We hiked most of the Hermit Trail in February during a time when the shuttle buses do not run down to Hermit's Rest. As such, we needed to keep relocating our car and backtracking to do specific chunks of the trail at a time. It was still a great experience! The winter landscape and lack of crowds made it very enjoyable and we felt as if we were all alone on the trail at times.

The Hermit trail is one of those which is not completely wheelchair accessible and this means that for long stretches it isn't paved as other rim trails are. This gives it more of a real-hike, wilder feel. Because much of the trail is at the edge of the rim and shaded by trees and hills, there were lots of snowy, icy patches with many inclines/declines. This made the normally easy hike very challenging and scary at times. I carried hiking poles with spiked ends and hiking boots with thick treads and at times I was still quite terrified of sliding over the edge. We warned several groups of tourists hiking in canvas fashion sneakers that they should turn back. We even helped one of them later when she got too scared to continue and wanted to turn around without her group.

I can't say enough about the beauty so I'll post photos. Try this wonderful place in the off season if you can; just remember to go prepared. Poles for balance, hiking boots or ice grippers on your shoes, and lots of energy snacks and water. You will love it!
