Hands down, the bamboo forest was the star of the attraction for this trail. We came here after staying overnight in Kihei, so we arrived around 8 am. We had the bamboo forest to ourselves and it was really cool to see the colours, hear the bamboo sway in the wind, and hike in the shade. The first bit of the trail is uphill, so a bit more strenuous, and because it was fairly dry the days leading up to our hike, the Makahiku falls was underwhelming. The Waimoku falls were more impressive, but would have been better if there was some rain the day or two before. I would recommend doing the Pipiwai trail first and then do the short and easy hike to see the O'heo pools.
Most of the hike after the Makahiku falls is in the shade, so it was actually very enjoyable!
