We started the loop drive on the North side of Lake Quinault - it was a small windy road through some houses and then more and more in the forest. After a while, the elevation started changing (rising) and the road turned to gravel. This got us pretty nervous in our rented minivan as it started to rain and get foggy. Finally we got to a small bridge and thought we were to the 1/2 way point - quite a small bridge but we managed. However, after we crossed, the road kept going NW rather than heading back! We had been about to turn around a couple times but decided to keep going. On this drive, we did see more amazing mossy trees and some of the largest ferns we'd ever seen! About the time we though we were lost for sure, we got to a larger bridge where we crossed the inlet to Lake Quinault and started heading back. Don't miss the waterfall after a small bridge on the South side of the lake. This road turned to tar much sooner than the other side did, so much better for driving. An added bonus was the Salmon House for supper 1/2 way back on the south side.

The Quinault Rain Forest is such an enchanting place to visit. The vine maples draped in curtains of moss, the tall Fir trees and old cedars. The smell is one I find so comforting, its so deep and earthy. A drive around Lake Quinault should take hours if you really want to get the full effect this forest can have on you. But drive slowly! You may see herds of elk wandering up the river bar, or a bear or cougar crossing the road in front of you. There are also a number of waterfalls to capture on film as you travel this wonderland. This is a place of such beauty, it will definitely be a memory you will treasure. There are plenty of trails of different degrees in difficulty for day hikes or longer hikes if you prefer. Take a raincoat though, it is not called a Rain Forest for nothing. You can tell the locals from the tourists because the locals don't use an umbrella. They say people from the Lake don't tan, they rust.

Really informative and friendly ranger station. Well marked trails and another place to sit in the tranquil beauty of a natural forest.
