If you are visiting Shenandoah National Park for the trails, the wildlife and the beauty and solitude of the mountains, then stay INSIDE the park at Big Meadow. The rooms are sparse and rustic. There are no TVs and not so "up to date" on modern amenities, but you can't beat the morning quiet and views from your room. Think if it as a "luxury camping trip" rather than a "luxury hotel vacation" and you will be happy with your experience. If you are traveling "through" the national park and just doing a skyline drive tour be prepared for "less than modern." We LOVE the end rooms that feature a bedroom and a little sitting room with a fireplace. Check online to see which "wildlife" is in season. You are more likely to see bears at certain times of the year than others. And yes, the deer and bears will grace you with their visits close to your Big Meadow windows for wonderful morning views.

Room Tip: Most rooms are great. If you have more than four people, reserve a room with an adjoining sitting ro...

I loved the lodge. Our room had a fabulous view. The room may have been dated but it has all that you need and it is not somewhere you spend a lot of time. The meals in the restaurant were delicious and the service was wonderful. all staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Would definitely stay here again if we get back to the USA.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the view

I stayed here with my boyfriend in September 2011 and we had a fantastic time. The service was brilliant and the food in the restaurant was really nice. Watching the sun setting on the balcony near the restaurant overlooking the mountains was amazing and deer were wandering about outside our lodge. We would definately stay here again the next time we visit America.

I stayed here as part of a tour group back in June 2011. Our tour director seemed to be worried that we wouldn't like the place because it wasn't a 5-star establishment and didn't have all the luxuries and amenities that a 5-star establishment has. He needn't have worried. Speaking for myself, what this place lacked in 5-star amenities, it more than made up for in terms of ambience, appeal, charm, beauty and comfort.

The lodge is in Shenandoah National Park so of course it is surrounded by the most amazing breathtakingly beautiful scenery around it. Even from your cabin, you can look out and see some of the most stunning beauty that that the area has to offer -full of trees, mountains and goodness knows what else. All sorts of wildlife wonder around as well outside the cabins and members of our tour group saw a variety of different animals mingling with the surroundings -all of which of course added to the appeal of staying here.

The dining area and the balcony right outside it offers a spectacular view of the surrounding environment and to sit and eat there and look out on all that beauty is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The ambience is just wonderful and the food was good as well

The cabins were wonderful, homely, warm, welcoming and very beautiful. Their design and interior had a charm and a beauty that made it both pleasant and a unique experience in itself. The design and decoration of the furnishings was also unique and very beautiful. The whole cabin had an ambience of down-to-earth warmth, homeliness and coziness that is sadly lacking in the modern world of accomodation. There were also chairs and tables outside from which you could sit and survey the breathtaking beauty of the area

The staff pulled out all the stops for our tour group. In addition to a warm reception, we got a welcoming note from the manager, a free sample of jam and a lodge employee who knocked on our doors at 6:30AM with a glass of refreshing orange juice (our tour bus was leaving at eight so this was in effect a wake up call). The hospitality of the staff here was great -they really made us feel at home

One slight downside -I know and respect that they want to keep the ambience of nature and wildlife as much as possible and not disturb it but the trail back from the restaurant to our cabins needs to be better illuminated late at night. I struggled to find my way walking back and the darkness was quite frightening at times. With those of us with poor eyesight, it'd be good to have a little more light in some places.

Nevertheless please don't let this put you off coming here -a torch or another lighting device can probably solve this problem. It really is a unique, beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime privilege staying here and this is probably one thing you really must do at least once. My only regret about Big Meadows Lodge is that we didn't stay here longer!

A great place to stay in Blue Ridge Mountains. My wife and I have stayed there 3 times. Every time a pleasure. If you expect 5 star standard - do not stay here. If you are looking for a place which is in balance with it's surroundings - you have come to right place. The restaurant is servering a nice breakfast and offers a good dinner.

Get a room in the main lodge facing the valley.

If looking for a 5 star hotel with amenities; look elsewhere. Here you will find rustic "lodge" rooms with an incredible view in an incredible setting. Set atop the mountain along Skyline Drive you could not ask for a better location, friendlier staff or a warmer, homier place to stay.
The front desk staff were delightful in setting my travel friend and I up with 2 adjoining rooms that shared a bath. And the price was reasonable. The rooms are small because all you do is sleep in them. But ours also had a desk by the window where I sat and enjoyed the view. I had one of the best sleeps of my life in this warm, cozy room after a day full of mountain air. The restaurant was surprisingly very good in a national park and we also were surprised at that evenings entertainment in the tap room- a local singer, songwriter who was very entertaining. This was free and very enjoyable.Free Wifi is available in the main lodge. There are walking and hiking trailheads on the property. One nice thing to do is sit in a rocker by the fireplace or in one of the chairs set up to gaze down into the valley. It occurred to me that I never have time to just sit and daydream but I sure did it with that view. Very relaxing. It closes for the Season by the second week of November but I will be back again. Loved it

Room Tip: All would be good here

Okay, so we didn't stay there...not because we didn't want to. We booked about 5 days in advance of our stay. The day we were set to go, we received a call saying there had been a problem with our booking, the suite we booked was already taken. They blamed it on a staffer who was not a regular. Well, this person took 20 minutes with me and she DID check several times with regular staff, so something was not right there. The person who called went on and on about why we could not have the suite, etc. Don't think we'll try again...whoever is running this facility lacks credibility.
