Stayed here for one night and greatly enjoyed the beautiful location right in the park at the bottom of the canyon. We were greeted and checked in promptly and went to the room. Had a porch looking to the canyon and saw three deer right outside our room as soon as we arrived. Room was clean and comfortable, but having cofee pots in the room would be nice. Took a quick hike on one of the Emerald Pools trails right across from the lodge and then went to have dinner at the Red Rock Grill. While I say don't eat there, if you have LOTS of time, it's okay. The food was delicious, was service was extremely slow. We didn't plan to spend our whole day at the park waiting to be seated, waiting to get our order taken, waiting for our food and then endlessly waiting for our check and then again for our credit card to be returned. This was the off-season, so I can't imagine what it would be like if they were really busy.
The lodge itself is very lovely, very rustic and charming. The gift shop has a lovely selection of merchandise and 2009 marks the centennial of the canyon as a national park.
Liked - great location close to trails.
Disliked - no coffee in room. Did not even try to go back to the restaurant for cofee as our dinner experience the night before was not good.

This review is for the Zion National Park Lodge, operated by Xanterra, located in the park itself. There are other places with similar names in Springdale. The lodge has motel style rooms and apparently also has cabins. We were in one of the motel rooms, a king, with a spring season rate. The room was quiet, very clean and comfortable. Clean is essential for us and this was as clean as we had hoped. The bed was comfortable. The room faced up against the side of the canyon, not across the floor of the canyon - thus the view was limited. This could have been rectified had we made the right request at reservation time. But, since we only slept in there, the direction of the "view" was not really relevant. The fan unit could be set in "fan only" mode and this would allow continuous background sound - something we like; there was no cycling on and off of the unit. It could be set in other modes, but we liked this feature. The lodge has a nice dining room that serves individual-order breakfasts, but also serves a fine buffet breakfast with cereals (hot and cold), fruit, eggs, sausage, bacon, etc., etc. The breakfasts are very good. The dinners and lunches are hearty and adequate. We rated the dinners as OK, and certainly acceptable. Just outside the park there are other options in Springdale, but we were satisfied with the food in the Lodge. The lobby staff were friendly and helpful, with an ability to provide local information as well as some information about various roads and routes of travel. All in all, a nice experience.

National Park Lodges. Always about the location. The location here is fabulous. The main lodge, motel units & cabins are all near each other, smack dab in the middle of the canyon floor. Lodge guests have special passes to drive on the road to the lodge, otherwise open only to very efficient Zion buses. My cabin faced 'the street' but all views were zion canyon walls. The cabin itself was better than many NP facilities. Very comfy beds, pastel towels & sheets (how refreshing from the usual white industrial linens) Bathroom well equipped. Fireplace. It was chilly when I was there (mid October) and the heating unit was confusing as it looked like an a/c unit. Maintenance was prompt in showing me how to operate it. Meals at the lodge were good. The Zion shutlle also runs very close the the town of Springdale, so all the dining & shopping of that town are available as well. My only disappointment was no in room coffee. It was a short walk and $2 away, but good.

OK, this place certainly isn't as deluxe as other national park lodges, but when you arrive at Zion Lodge on a enchanting winter afternoon, you will think you have died and gone to heaven. In case you haven't heard, Zion is jaw droppingly beautiful, and seeing it in snow only adds to the majesty. But, back the hotel. We booked a western cabin. It was cute as a button, with a working fireplace, two cozy double beds and a serviceable bathroom. The best part is that the lodge complements, rather then takes away from, the beauty of the park. We ate dinner in Springdale, so I can't comment on the dinner food, but we did go into the restaurant that evening for dessert. Though there is no lounge per se, there are a few tables set aside for drinking and snacks with a TV. Dessert is more my wife's thing than mine but it was good enough. We also had breakfast the next morning, which was not a bad deal at 7.25/person for a buffet. And at 115/night, the room rate was more than reasonable given the surroundings. All the staff we encountered was cheerful and helpful.
All in all, I have no complaints. This is THE place to stay if you are visiting Zion.

We stayed at the Zion Lodge during the week of Thanksgiving, 2008. My wife and teen-age daughter stayed in one of the cabins. Having stayed at Old Faithful Inn and the Lake Yellowstone lodges in Yellowstone, which are also operated by Xanterra, I can say that Zion Lodge is on par with those.

Our room was clean and tidy. The bathroom was also clean. A separate dressing area with sink made getting the family out the door in the morning quicker. The fireplace contains a gas log set, but adds a cozy feel that my daughter loved. The air unit was a bit dated, and it took a night to get the heater set just right, but it was warm enough on the 30-degree nights. A digital thermostat would have been nice. We found a few 1/4" black bugs on the walls inside the room that appeared to be plentiful outside as well. They were slow, flightless and harmless, and I just carried them out when I found them. Not a big deal for someone from Florida, the bug capitol of the U.S. If you're skittish about things like that, you may want to consider booking a room in the larger "hotel" units.

The Lodge itself is very pretty. Not grand, like Old Faithful in Yellowstone, but still impressive. There is comfy leather furniture to relax on and look at the expansive grassy area in front of the Lodge and the huge rock face beyond. The gift shop had plenty of shirts, hats and trinkets to help prove we went to Zion. In the morning, a nice little window is open in the lobby with coffee, hot chocolate, lattes, etc. Two computers are available for internet access, although one was out of commission when we were there, and the connection is painfully slow. Still, it worked in a pinch when my daughter had to let her friends know she was still alive.

We found the restaurant to be very good. We had the breakfast buffet three times. The food was good, hot, and replenished frequently. Eggs, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, fresh fruit, etc. No pancakes, waffles or french toast though (you can order those separately) -- darn! Dinner was very good. The menu is somewhat limited though, especially if you have a picky child. Still, they gladly produced some chicken fingers from the lunch menu for the kid. The grown-up food was great. Service was excellent. There are several good places to eat in town, just three miles away, so one dinner at the Lodge was enough for us. If you have kids, head to the Zion Pizza and Noodle Co. in Springdale. Very good pizza and pasta.

Overall the staff was friendly and helpful. Two gentlemen at the front desk gave us excellent advice on local hikes. Room service was good and prompt.

Zion Lodge is a wonderful place to stay. I agree with other reviewers that part of the expense is for the location. But what a location! The views from the lodge -- even the front door of our cabin -- are stunning. If that's not what you're there for (but why else?), there are several places in Springdale a few miles away.

The stay was a total delight. For about $25 more a night we chose the "suite" which has a living room separate from the bedroom as well as a tiny kitchen area (with fridge & sink) and a balcony. For this time of year, the lodge restaurant was never crowded and service was always excellent.

People are right when they say Zion Lodge is the best place to stay "at" Zion. It is the only lodge inside the park boundaries. As far as convenince to all the hikes, etc, and having a place to eat, it is the best place to be. That said, when you compare it to other NPS lodges like several in Yellowstone, Teton, and the lodges at Yosemite, it pales in comparison. You will find no cathedral ceilings or great fireplaces in this place. The restuarant leaves much to be desired and there is no lounge. The rooms are separate from the "lodge," and threadbare, but clean and functional. Your money goes to the location and not to the your amenities.
