This evening me and 2 friends drove from the near by town of Sherborn to this pub simply for a quiet pint, We are all over 18 and two of us are 20. Immediately upon arrival it was apparent that the gentleman behind the bar (who I can only assume to be the proprietor) took one look at us, and told us he would not serve us even though we all had valid I.D (two drivers liscences and a passport) because we looked "too young". If it his excuse had been that there was a dress code that would of been fine but it was down to simple disgusting agest discrimination. I frequently used to eat here with my family but I shall not be coming back. Thanks a lot.

I am extremely sorry that you were unhappy with your visit to The Kings Arms. We have a 100% zero tolerance policy on underage drinking which having since spoken to you, has been explained. You have now been added to our register of people that whilst look under age, are in fact able to purchase alcohol with valid Identification. According to the law we are within our rights to not serve people that we deem not old enough and are very sorry to have caused such offence on this occasion but as I'm sure you will understand, if I were to be caught serving somebody that was under the age, my licence would be revoked and 35 people would immediately be out of a job, not to mention the fine that would be issued.

My normal hotel haunts are the 5 star luxurious but impersonal variety, so it was with trepidation that having found none in the area of Sherborne Abbey I booked the Kings Arms.
I was travelling with a regular travel companion to a wedding in the Abbey and we arent easily pleased - but both had a wonderful time and would not hesitate to recommend it. Why...

1 - on our way from London after work and running a little late the hotel called to confirm we would like dinner and to ensure that the kitchen didnt close before we arrived. How thoughtful!
2 - The car park is on the otherside of the road, approx 30 seconds from the front door
3 - The bar has lots of lovely paintings by local artists for sale, an eclectic and entertaining mix
4 - The welcome was warm and friendly and we were soon ensconced in our room
5 - The room was large and with all mod cons, nice decor and clean and fresh
6 - Dinner was a great surprise - a good choice of options and the food was fabulous
7 - Cheese portions very large
8 - Good selection of wines - we went with a Carmenere from Chile
9 - Beds comfortable and crisp sheets and soft pillows
10 - Ironing board and iron, kettle and hairdryer in the room
11 - Very quiet and we slept really well
12 - Breakfast very good English breakfast
13 - Not expensive
14 - I foolishly left an envelope behind when we checked out - the hotel found it and called me so I was able to collect it before going back to London

All in all - a great find, lovely people, great atmosphere and I would go back in a heartbeat if I needed to be in the area again.

Next time they promised the sun would shine....but cant blame them for the weather!

I stayed at the Kings Arms recently for two nights and would highly recommend it to anyone. The rooms are beautiful, the food fantastic and staff were very attentive and helpful.

We stayed in Onyx (room 6) which was lovely. As we had several friends staying at the hotel as well we saw most of the rooms and they were all really nice with spacious bathrooms and lots of room in the rooms themselves. We ate in the restaurant on the Friday night and the food was of a very high standard and reasonably priced. Service in the restaurant was very good as well. Breakfast in the mornings was also lovely.

I cant praise the staff highly enough - they were helpful, attentive and catered to every need. We would definitly stay here again and i would recommend the hotel for groups as well as the hotel managed our group very successfully.

We are so well blessed with fantastic pubs in this area of the country and the Kings Arms is no exception. We live in a little village quite near the pub and I looked at the property for an investor client when it was closed and boarded up 3-4 years ago, I think. He wouldn't touch it as it was in a dire condition and running with damp and rats. Along came Tony and his wife and in a brave move pumped in a vast amount of money to create what is now a superb eating, sleeping & drinking hostelry. Lunch is our favorite and we don't go overboard, usually plumping for a Caesar Salad or Minute Steak Burger or some pasta. The welcome is warm from the outset when Tony welcomes you from the helm of the ship whilst his wife oversees the kitchen. Staff are mainly female, very pretty and show a lot of interest and no too overbearing. Good local ale and produce expertly cooked quite often on the Josper Oven which is a charcoal beast out the back reaching 500 C. Great operation and always well supported by the locals and regulars. Prices from £12 - £20 for lunch and up to £35 for dinner (2 courses and a drink). Sunny patio and croquet lawn. See the website for details of accommodation and the current full menu. It's best to ring for a table.

Stayed 2 nights in this lovely place, food was amazing and we even had 2 deserts each. Rooms are cosy, showers are nice and beds are comfy. Would definitely return for both the food and accommodation.

We stayed one night here over Easter travelling down from Manchester to meet my sons soon to be in laws, who are local and live just up the road, it was their recommendation and we were not disappointed!

We all had dinner in the restaurant and the food was delicious, the service was efficient, friendly and polite and the wine list was extensive, we opted for a very palatable organic white which we all enjoyed.

Breakfast was equally as efficiently served and was tasty, plentiful and fresh.

The room was tastefully decorated, cosy and spotlessly clean, huge fluffy towels and bathrobes, with crisp cotton bedding, we stayed in room 2 on the front and had a great nights sleep.

The bathroom was fab also however at 5'4" I am not keen on rain showers, they are just not great if you don't want to get your hair wet or have to apply a full face of make up again! I also think a full length mirror somewhere is a must, there was a small one on the wall in addition the the bathroom mirror but it was not much use when two of you are trying to get ready!

We had an enjoyable stay and would definitely use the hotel again and recommend to others.

Whilst staying locally we wandered out taking in the beautiful fresh Dorset air, and alighted upon this oasis of charm in the quaint village of Charlton Horethorne. It is obvious that a good deal of money and thought has gone into the restoration of this hostelry, and it has been handled with sensitivity and style. The magnificent Australian marble bar, is worth the trip alone, it's beyond beautiful and very unusual. The staff/owners were charming and very hospitable, which is not something you find every day, and the lunch time menu was a delight. The hand cut thrice fried chips were amazing, which accompanied my Josper Smoked chicken burger and the Capaccino Brulee with a Baileys foam would not be out of place in a Michelin restaurant. We thought that the eclectic mix of artistic works on the walls were lovely and added to the charm of the property. They are all for sale, and obviously they change regularly. An unsolicited jug of iced water with the lunch was an added bonus and a welcome addition. We cannot comment on the rooms as we didnt stay, however, if the same standard is applied to the rooms as is exhibited downstairs, then I am sure they are of a very high standard indeed. A large window allows you to watch the workings of the kitchen from one of the wide corridors towards the restaurant, and it was spotless and workmanlike. Like most people we judge many establishments by the standards of their restrooms, and these were an exceptionally clean mix of travertine and stone sinks and designer soaps with additional complimentary toiletries and "emergency items" for any ladies in the party.

We would have no reservations about recommending the Kings Arms as an eatery, it was a delightful lunch in a very restful and charming ambience. The mixture of old and new blended seamlessly. Utterly charming. Try it for yourself.
