I stayed at Gilsland Hall Hotel earlier this year, booked for my wife and myself. Unfortunately she broke her leg badly just two days before our due arrival, and was in hospital nearby. We live about 300 miles away, so I had no choice but to stay at the hotel, and visit her. She's now on the road to recovery, so we decided to re-visit the hotel, and take up where we'd left off our intended holiday.
We invited some of our relatives to join us for afternoon tea + cakes, sandwiches, etc, on the day of our arrival, and we had a nice time. I'd also asked for the same room I'd had previously as the window view was excellent. We ate evening meals in the bar, where there is a good menu, and had full English breakfasts - at home I usually just have a slice or two of toast.
There's a lot to see nearby, including many remains of the Roman era, including Hadrian's Wall. We also visited Carlisle which is only about half an hour away.
We like this hotel, and will very likely book it again.More
