We arrived in Antigua on February 21st. We loved the resort! The restaurants, food, pools, and excursions were all terrific! Everything was extremely clean and amenities are easily accessible. We stayed in the Monte Carlo Sunset Honeymoon Oceanview Suite. It was wonderful! The entire stay was very relaxing and beautiful!

My (now)husband and I came to Antigua to get married and have our honeymoon. We could not have asked for a better experience! The staff was super-friendly; the food was delicious; the hotel was amazing.
The watersports that are included are a ton of fun, and I recommend the Combo excursion (that you have to pay for). Totally worth the $!
There is live music every night; a late night cafe with espressos and ice cream; and just an overall happy feeling about the enitre place!
You do have to get up around 6:45AM to get good beach chairs; as a lot of the vacationers slip the butlers some money to save them spots. I recommend getting a butler; we didn't, and I wish we had! If you get down to the pool after 7, you can expect a chair in the sun (and it gets hot!).
The only complaint I have is about Bayside restauarant- it is a partially outdoor buffet restaurant, so there are a lot of birds flying around and sitting on, and eating, the food that you are about to eat! That grossed me out, so we did not spend much time there. Also, the lady that makes the omlettes there is the ONLY unfriendly and miserable staff member on the entire resort.
All in all, I would DEF come back!!!

Room Tip: Honeymoon Ocean View Suite was GORGEOUS!!!

We returned from Sandal, Antigua recently. This was our eighth trip to Sandals, Antigua. Needless to say we choose this resort for many reasons, ie: first and foremost, the staff, accomodations and a beautiful island. We are treated like family and our every need is taken care of to make our stay wonderful! Already making plans to return next year.

My girlfriend and I arrived in Antiqua from NYC on Sat Feb 25th, 2012 at 1:30PM and after getting thru customs(small airport) we were directed to the Sandals stand. We waited ~ 15 mins and ourselves and one other couple were driven to the resort(15 mins). The place is very nice and everything was so clean. The lobby was crowded with people coming and going. We had to wait 1 hr for our room to be cleaned. So we grabbed a drink at the bar. The room was nicely done up but we could see nothing outside our window. (trees blocking tennis courts)The next morning 5Am.. we were awoken with the Sandals workers unloading trucks. So we asked for a room change and got one. They seem to have upgraded us because our room was even better. Only downside was we waited 4 hrs to get our new room. Both of our rooms were never cleaned before 4PM.
Weather - awesome .. hot and sunny 99% of the time with a steady light breeze all day and night
Meals :
All the resturants were good .. depends upon what type food you like .. I tried them all and liked each of them. Men : For dinner .. brings fancy jeans or slacks .. 3 of the resturants wont let you in with shorts or raggy jeans. You have to book 2 days in advance otherwise the 3 resturants are fully booked.

The beach is beautiful .. but you had to get up before 7Am to "save" an umbrella. Plenty of chairs all day long. Pretty much the same for all the pools. .. too hot all day without an umbrella. Hope you dont mind being pestered by the locals for excursions. We got hit upon frequently, but had some laughs with them. Water is so clear. We jet skied 2x's ... awesome time.

Staff : were very cold and distant. Obviously there are exceptions .. but for the most part .. we felt like it was a burden to them to serve us. (I also stayed at Sandalsin Jamaica .. the staff was 100 times nicer.).

Bring $USD .. you can get in from the front desk as well .. but they charge you $10 for every $100 and all you can get is $100/day.. You need it for shopping, excursions, Airport tax on way home $28/pp ect.

Drinks are watered down .. even when you ask them to double up the booze.

The town was very good .. definately worth the 15 mins $25rt Taxi ride

We also went horse back riding on the beach $60/pp ..2 hrs .. great time

All the excursions .. we booked on the beach with the locals

I laughed at the people who paid $180 moonlight dinner on beach .. two of the resturants are next to the beach .. feel like you are on the beach .. and are free

Internet is not free ($45/week) .. They have a few computers for use (min charge)

Overall the trip was great... very relaxing

We went with another couple to SGA this year as a change from our previous holiday that was a 1-week all-inclusive cruise with Silver Seas. We went with an open mind and were anxious to get away on a much-needed trip. On the whole, we were disappointed and will gladly stay with the 5 star cruising. Where to begin...the prices were pretty much the same...airfare, beautiful accommodations, food, alcohol. With our cruise, the shipboard credits paid for all our excursions. At SGA, everything was so expensive. $100. USD for a 30 minute massage...come on now.

We did a great zip-lining, kayak, and snorkel adventure for $130pp and really enjoyed ourselves. We felt slightly disappointed the very first night.... we had the portofino room with one of the doors that never fully opened. Our "fully stocked bar" was stocked with alcohol we didn't drink. When we asked for what we wanted, we were told, "that's extra". On the cruise, not only could we get any alcohol of choice in our room, but we had about 3-5 varieties offered to us. Another big disappointment was the lack of room service.

There weren't even any fruit or munchies in our room. On the cruise we were greeted every morning to croissants, coffee, and fruit served to us. Plus, we had daily fruit brought to our room. At SGA, that was a service only provided if we had paid extra. Let's talk about the food...overall it was good. Service...overall bad.

In order of what we liked: Eleanor's ambiance and service was lovely despite the overcooked, dried lobster. OK Corral food, ambiance and service was wonderful.... no complaint about the food. We had a lot of fun at Kimono's with the chef. Mario's ambiance was lovely, the chairs are worn out and uncomfortably low to sit in. The evening service was courteous; the day staff for the buffet breakfast were slow and inattentive.

To boot, birds had nested within Mario's and thoroughly were enjoying the fruits and breads that were waiting for us to eat. Not only that, but the fruit flies on the food was a complete turnoff. The same can be said of the breakfast buffet at Bayside, with one of the staff standing around with a bamboo stick to swat them off the food. Why can't the staff put some protective covers over the food? Wouldn't cost much and would make the food a whole lot more appealing.

Now lets talk about the wild cats roaming the property. They are always around the restaurants although we didn’t see one jump up on the tables to get scraps they were certainly around begging for food. Why are they allowed to be there?? They likely had not received any shots, were eating the little geckos around the room and one even managed to sneak into our room. At least the geckos ate the bugs! What happens if the cat would have bitten one of the guests?

A la Carte breakfast would be wonderful for those of us who prefer that to buffet.... but one didn't exist. When eating from the buffet you had to put your used plates on another table when you returned to your table since the staff rarely cleared them for you.

Barefoot by the beach is lovely spot at night. At lunch there's a long wait. At dinner there wasn't. We woke up the next morning with tons of bug bites around our calves and ankles after that dinner.

And, the trophy for worse service went to Cricketeers on our first night after a long day of travelling. It was the only place still serving food and we were so excited to finally be there. We felt as if we were putting out the staff by asking them for drinks and food. We tried to have a conversation with them but they did not even go out of their way to engage us.

We hoped this did not set precedence for the remainder of the week; but, unfortunately, this was the general feeling we got 50% of the time. We felt as if we were a burden to them. The service is probably the most impressive difference between our trips to SGA compared to our trip aboard our cruise.

Now for relaxation by the pool or at the beach. We had no problem getting chairs as long as we got up at 5:30 am to reserve them. People would reserve chairs and sometimes not even show up. There's a policy written but not enforced stating that unused towels will be removed. We even met people who told us they reserved towels at both the pool and beach. No wonder there were no spots to sit. That was frustrating. The vendors on the beach, even though there weren't pushy, were there all the time. Constantly saying 'no thanks' became a royal pain. Why can't that beach be private like other all-inclusive?

We are now back home and taking medication to relieve the itching from all the various bug bites. There was a scary daily defogging at dusk to help try alleviating the mosquito issue, but we're not sure it worked but terrified anyone who was in the area. All in all, it was a beautiful spot, we enjoyed ourselves, but we would not go back. Comparatively, the cruise was the best value for our money-service, location, and quality.

This was our second visit to a Sandal’s resort & we were not disappointed. The staff was very pleasant & accommodating to our group. I was surprised internet access was not free, I paid $42.99 for the week & I felt the price of the excursions were overpriced. The restaurants were very good though we were disappointed that we could not get reservations for our group at two of the restaurants. They have plenty of activities planned throughout the day if you choose to participate, or just enjoy drinks on the beach or at one of the many pools. A fun evening is guaranteed thanks to a variety of entertainment featured. Our group had such a great time we already booked our Sandal’s vacation for next year.

My husband and I choose Sandals Grande Antigua for our honeymoon and we are happy with our choice. The hotel, location, beach and food were exactly what we were looking for with the exception of night life. If you are looking for a party don't stay at a Sandals.

We stayed from February 12 to February 22, 2012. Weather was good, hot and sunny everyday! We booked the Honeymoon Hibicus room on the Caribbean side however similar to many others we were upgraded to the Monte Carlos suites on the newer Mediterranean side. I recommend booking a room on the newer side, it's worth it! The Caribbean side looks run down.

The location of the resort was great, 20 minute drive from the airport and is a very nice property on Dickson’s Bay. The beach is beautiful, blue clear water and white sand but it is kind of narrow. As others have mentioned the beach is public and there are local vendors which I recommend supporting as much as you can. If you can afford to spend a week at Sandals you can afford to support the local people who need it a lot more that you do!

The service is good and most of the staff members will do their best to ensure guests are content. One thing to note is that many of the staff members are not too friendly or social. Hard working people but they tend to keep to themselves.

The most enjoyable part of our trip was the excursions. Our first was the Canopy Tour which takes you on a drive across the island, zip lining, kayaking and snorkeling. This was our least favorite tour as the zip lines are very short and the park did not appear to be very safe. The second tour was the Extreme by Adventure Antigua which was amazing! They take you around the island in a speed boat. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and friendly, really make you feel comfortable. This tour stops for swimming with stingrays (sooo amazing) snorkeling and stops at 2 different beaches that were both amazing! The third tour we did was the Eco tour also by Adventure Antigua. This tour was also really good, it takes you around half the island by catamaran, stops at an island for a small hike with an amazing view, then some snorkeling, swimming and my favorite a trip to hells gate where you climb through caves .. great views from the top! Definitely book a trip with Adventure Antigua, you won't be disappointed.

Overall, we enjoyed our honeymoon but will not likely return to Antigua... on to the next island!
