We went to the Sandals Grande Antigua in August last year. I could not fault this hotel. The staff were brilliant, the food was amazing and the beach was gorgeous. We also got a room upgrade when we arrived and were invited to a dinner event one evening for people who had been to sandals more than once. From the minute we stepped into the hotel the staff could not do enough. I would without fail go to a Sandals resort again.

This was our first experience at a Sandals and we chose it for our honeymoon. We could not have asked for more perfect experience. We had a pool/ocean view room (I think it was called the Venetian) on the 3rd or 4th floor on the Mediterranean side of the resort . The room was exceptional; clean, fresh, beautiful. This side of the resort was also amazing, much newer and more resort-like than the Caribbean side. We spent the early mornings drinking coffee in our robes (provided in-room) on the balcony. The resort is very peaceful and quiet in the morning.

During our stay, we ate at each of the restaurants at least once. Delicious food across the board! We had the most fun at the hibachi restaurant, because we got to meet several other couples around our age. We all had a really fun night together at the restaurant. We even connected with one of the couples later in our trip and spent an evening hanging out together. We enjoyed in-room cocktails thanks to the mini bar.

During the day, we spent most of our time in the various pools on the property. The swim up bars were fun. The beach was nice, although we went during jellyfish season, and there were quite a few small jellies in the water. They're very mild; the stings merely feel like a scratch on your skin. Nothing to worry about. We went on a scuba diving trip and the deeper waters were extremely congested with jellyfish--my only complaint. It scared me but my husband wasn't bothered by it in the least.

Overall, this was a fantastic trip and we will come back. We have talked about it ever since. The only thing we would do differently is plan to visit outside of jelly season.

Sandals Grande Antigua is the most luxurious resort I have ever been to. I have traveled to the Caribbean all of my life.I am from the New York/New Jersey area and am used to fine food and restaurants. Sandals Grande Antigua is comparable to any fine restaurant in my area. The food and variety is excellent. The staff is very friendly and could not be more accomadating. I stayed in the Caribbean Grove and it was actualy a beautiful room as it was newly refurbished. Almost all the rooms are now refurbished with the remaining rooms to be completed by 2011. If you have concerns about your room being "tired" call and ask to be placed in one of the new rooms. The beach is gorgeous. The location of the Caribbean Grove is actually better then the new Mediterranean section. The Caribbean Grove has most of the restaurants nearby, the beach is very close, entertainment and bars very close and many smaller pools are a short walk. The Mediterranean is beautiful but set further back and is a high rise. The management is impeccable here and this location and service is nothing short of outstanding. I am returning next year to this location as it is definetely one of the most "Grand" of the Sandals locations. I have been to three others and none can compare.

Hello all,

Just wanted to share our experience at this resort last week. We've never written a review or even complained about a stay as we're a pretty down to earth couple, but we felt after this horrible visit that is was our responsibility to share our trip story with those to follow. Below are just a few points that provide further insight.

As written in many other reviews, too many of the staff appear to not like their jobs and do not care to make your stay enjoyable. We witnessed hostesses slam dinners on tables and even had eyes rolled at us. I read one review that stated that poor service should be expected as their compensation is minimal - I don't agree. There are other ways Management can incentive staff. We WERE select signature members of Sandals and had wonderful service in St. Lucia, just a few islands away.

Do not book a luxury beachfront rondoval, or any room in the older section. Specifcally, rondovals are in a busy section of the resort, not directly on the beach as the title of the room would lead you to believe, and are dirty and dated. Dust balls the size of golf balls fell on our bed when we turned on the ceiling fan and we heard workers tell other guests that they should not stay in the rondovals. Our coffee maker did not work and we did not have hot water until the 2nd day of our trip. When we "complained" we were asked why we would want an upgrade when we had one of the best rooms and that the whole island did not have water. This was a lie as our friends in the MV did not lose water.

Be careful when ordering poolside cabanas. A key perk to them is the misting system for a hot day. This system only works on a handful of them. It's broken on the others, but Sales continues to sell them without disclosing this....per a hostess at the resort.

The Bulter service is a loose phrase and a joke. To us, they complained about other guests, said they shouldn't be working because they were too sick, and didn't do anything special without being asked. One even made a comment that they would've done more had they not been so tired. We completed an on-line form for the butler service answering many questions about our likes, our special event for which were attending, etc. None of these items were reviewed or recognized by the butlers.

The fridges are not stocked timely. We heard many guests joke about this - expect one restocking a week.

They thoroughly abide by island time. One yoga class was cancelled after 40 minutes of being lead to believe it was delayed and another was significantly delayed and replaced by another type of class. Don't assume activities in the daily agenda will occur as advertised.

Do not book on-line excursions. We booked a sunset cruise, but learned afterward wouldn't be occuring because of a holiday. We went to the Entertainment desk to ask where we should meet for the cruise, they told us to go to the Main Bar. We did, waited for 20 minutes, then went back to the desk at which time they told us the tour would not be happening and it was our mistake for booking on-line. "Never book On-line!" was the advise.

The beach is public, not private. It's not relaxing and you will be harrassed by vendors approx. every 15 minutes. The sand fleas are also previlant; we even had 2 comments at the airport on how bad we were bitten.

24 hour room service is also misleading, and only relates to a handful of items like burgers and fries. The meals are only offered during set hours of the day which our lended butler was quick to point out when we arrived.

Overall, the resort did not meet our expectations. If attending, keep expectations low, do not do any prep or ordering on-line, and book the cheapest room in the MV. Stay at the pool and do not go to the beach.

Good luck to all going to this resort in the future; we hope you have a wonderful experience and that ours was an isolated event. Take care.

This was our 2nd time to Sandals, Antigua and out of the Sandals resorts we have stayed in during the past 9 years (others being in Jamaica, Bahamas, St Lucia) this is our favourite. We found the Staff very friendly and attentive to our needs. The choice of restaurants very good and facilites at the Centre excellent. .Our room was excellent and had one of the best well stocked bars I have seen. Better still it was all inclusive. The pool facilities as well as the wonderful sandy beach are great. We stayed a week it was not long enough! So recommend ten days or more. We hope to go back again in the near future.
