“Beware the Moskito/sandflys”
Reviewed 16 March 2012

Stayed in ocean view room 321, the view was superb. The only problem was the sea crashing on the rocks which was loud at night and disturbed our sleep. The room was clean and tidy, but no tea/coffee facilies,we learnt later you could request a kettle at reception.
The food at the first part of week was really tasty and enjoyable.as the week went on the quality appeared to change for the worse, with next to no vegetables. In the morning you looked at the menu for the 2 restraunts and the booked which restraunt you wanted, The reflections menu on 2 occasions was different to the one we had seen in the morning. The Drifters lunch was our favorite, self service buffet
The hotel grounds are very well kept and beautiful you could not fault the location. The staff are first class and nothing was to much trouble. The hotel even provided a packed lunch for one of our excursions.
The beach was clean and tidy, and plenty of very comfortable sun loungers.
The only problem which might stop us staying at the crystal cove again would be the Moskito/sandfly bites have never been bitten so much at any resort we have stayed at. Really enjoyed the hotel. nice people, lovelly location shame about the beach bugs

Dear Reviewer,
We are very pleased to hear you enjoyed the service of our staff, the hotel grounds and the facilities during your recent visit to Crystal Cove.
Our guests’ comfort is of utmost importance to us and we were disappointed to hear you experienced problems with the disturbance of mosquitoes and sand flies during your stay. Elegant Hotels have stringent health and safety procedures in place and part of the programme includes fumigating the outside areas monthly here at Crystal Cove. Guest rooms are sprayed on request and insect repellent is also available in our hotel shop for personal use. We recommend the spraying of the skin against insects as some persons are more affected than others.
We apologise for the inconsistency that you may have experienced with the menus on the latter days of your stay. As part of our continued commitment to our guest’s dining experience we will continue to train and improve on all service standards to ensure we can satisfy all guest needs.
The refurbishing of Drifters Beach Restaurant and Bar and various other areas will also be included as part of our efforts.
We do value your comments and would definitely like to welcome you back to the hotel.

Kindest Regards
Hotel Manager

This was our first experience of an All Inclusive resort..we were most impressed with the level of service and attention to detail. The whole complex is beautifully maintained and the staff are lovely. Walks along the coast.to Sandy Lane or further afield were delightful...excellent swimmimg.

Room Tip: ..rooms around the bandstand might be a bit noisy..but only until 10.30pm

Just back from 10 days at CC and have to add a review on this fab all inclusive, great-value hotel. It's a winning combination of setting, service and location. Just south of Tamarind, Colony Club and the upmarket and hyper-priced Sandy Lane this small and well run resort is a real jewel. Being smaller than most of the other hotels you get a sense of intimacy and your fellow guests and ther staff are all your friends before your stay is out. Food is perhaps the only weak point and doesnt really justify the rating but its an issue that is well offset by the plus points. Many guests were on repeat visits (some 5 or 6 times) kids welcome but not over-running the place and all the usual facilities. Barbados has been extensively developed since I was last there 25 years ago (check out Lime Grove shopping in Holetown for all the top brands) but the old coast road still has the same feel with the regular "Reggae Buses", chattel houses and rum shops.

Room Tip: Get a sea view if you can afford it

My husband and two adult children were in Barbados for a week-long stay at the Colony Club. We decided, rather spur-of-the moment, to extend our stay by 3 days as the first part of the holiday was disappointing due to poor weather.

I had stayed at this property (Crystal Cove) with my parents when I was a teenager (MANY years ago) when it was called Barbados Beach Village. I was quite keen to stay there again for nostalgia reasons. Although we are not a fan of the all-inclusives, we decided to try and book our extra 3 days here. We dropped in to ask about availability and were told that unfortunately the resort was full. Disappointed, we went back to our resort but when I checked on their online reservation system it showed that they had availability. I called back the resort and spoke to Mr. Charles Maynard, General Manager, and he told me he would get back to me in short order, which he did. He advised me that there was one suite available that could accommodate the four of us and we were welcome to come and check it out. He was only concerned we might not like the location right next to the bandstand area.

We were shown through the ocean-front suite with a supervisor, Shane, who was extremely helpful and willing to do whatever was necessary to accommodate us. It was really lovely with two levels connected with a cool spiral staircase, the upper level having a king-size bed and large ensuite bathroom. The lower level had a bar area, full bathroom and a pull-out couch and chairs. Large sliding glass doors opened to a balcony which was right on the beach. Just fabulous.

The pull-out sofa did not look to be very comfortable, as they often aren't, and Shane arranged to have two single beds put in the room to accommodate our two kids which I felt was going above and beyond the call of duty.

Two small complaints were bed pillows were kind of hard and there was an occasional smell of sewage when we sat on our balcony.

The pool areas are very attractive with waterfalls and beautiful flowers. There are lots of comfortable lounge chairs and tables and umbrellas set up everywhere. Very pretty. The beach is nice, lots of sun lounge chairs with those retractible "hoods". There are plenty of beach towels, they are left in your room each day or you can get them by the beach. The ocean is quite rough here, at least during our stay it was. On our last day we all had a blast playing and being tossed around in the big waves.

There are two restaurants, Drifters is the Beach Bar where you can have lunch or dinner and it is very casual. We had lunch there twice and the food was quite good. Reflections is the "indoor" restaurant and is very nice and the food was extremely good. We were impressed with the meals that we ate here. The service on all levels was faultless. Our last evening dinner at Reflections was Jamaican a la carte and there was entertainment with a very good singer. Our server (wish I could remember her name) was boogying to the beat as she worked and having a great time. She was really fun.

I have to say that I am a big fan of the Elegant Hotels in Barbados. We stayed our first week at Colony Club and, although it is more upscale than Crystal Cove, we really enjoyed the 3 days we spent here. You can have meals at other sister resorts in the Elegant chain or spend time enjoying their beaches and facilities. There is a water taxi that will take you to Turtle Beach, Tamarind and Colony Club during the day. We ate one evening meal at Tamarind for an additional cost but at Turtle Beach, which is all-inclusive, there is no extra cost. You just make a reservation and go.

In summary, we enjoyed this resort very much and would return again. I would like to thank the General Manager, Charles Maynard and supervisor, Shane, for their wonderful hands-on service in making sure that we had a great holiday. It was much appreciated.

Room Tip: Loved our ocean-front suite but the waves are loud and might affect your sleep. Check out the Cave...

From the minute we arrived we were made to feel welcome.
This wasn't only the reception staff but throughout the hotel, the restaurant, housekeeping, bars, the beach staff. Smiles wherever you went!
Of course one expects certain standards but its always refreshing to find them.
I didn't much like the cave bar but then thats subjective as it was obviously popular with many others. Some excellent live entertainment and some not quite so excellent but still OK.

Room Tip: When I return I will select a room nearer to the beach which is where I spend most of the day but th...

We have just returned from a two week stay at the Crystal Cove and would start by saying that all reviews are mainly subjective and hence can vary widely from individual to individual - that said, there are certain basic ellements that we all expect - cleanliness, efficient and freindly staff, reasonable facilities, a good location and a reasonable standard of food etc.

You could tick all the above for this hotel, but yet there was something lacking - that extra spark that would make it stand out - but for us it just didn't have it - hence the three star review.

Without going into too much detail we felt that the basic problem was that the Hotel and its staff were reactive to guests rather than being proactive - if there was a problem then sure - by and large they would sort it, but to my mind the thing that makes a "good" hotel into a "superb" one is knowing what the guests want and providing it, before they ask.

It gave the impression that they were trying to see how much they could cut costs before the guests complained and then quickly try and recover when they did.

In short we had problems with the food (woefully small portions and a very limited menu - no way is it "a la carte" - it's simply "Table D'hote" - with a choice of starter or salad and four entress, one of which was a vegetarian one). Yes - you can ask for more - but why should you have to ? and no we were not being greedy - would you accept a small (30mm dia by 5mm thick) pate as a fish cake - only the one mind you - as a full starter ? - no I'm sure you wouldn't.

Ditto with the house liquors - not a premium brand in sight (until challenged on the last day) when a bottle of Famous Grouse miraculously appeared along with a bottle of Drambuie.

The facilities at the resort were also limited (due to being on a very cramped site) with only two restaurants and two bars - one of each being closed when it was raining (and it does that more often than one thinks in Barbados). This means that the one remaining facility becomes very cramped and unpleasant.

Overall we enjoyed our stay in Barbados, but you do need to get out of the hotel and explore, it's just too small to be a self contained resort.

As a hotel - Crystal Cove is perfectly acceptable - as a an all inclusive resort - sorry , but no.

Our tip - stay for no more that 7 days, budget for additional spending on external trips/lunches/tours and make sure you avoid rooms 119/120, 122/222 and 129 (the former has the dreaded security fence at the front - which is hideous - the latter are adjacent to the Drifters bar and entertainment stand and can be very noisy.)

Final positive note - the staff will do all they can to make you feel at home and are genuinely friendly.

Room Tip: It's pot luck I'm afraid but reject rooms 119/120 out of hand and try and avoid 122/222 or 1...

Dear Reviewer,

We are sorry to hear you were disappointed during your recent trip to Crystal Cove. We strive to provide each and every guest staying with us, the best experience possible and our customer feedback is important to us. We thank you for making mention to the good points noted about the hotel and appreciate all comments from our guests as this enables us to continually review our service and quality standards. Crystal Cove’s commitment to guest satisfaction is reflected in the service standards of our experienced and knowledgeable staff which are an integral part of our success.

At the beginning of the year, we invested time and money into updating Crystal Cove’s reception areas with contemporary furniture and vibrant soft furnishings. In addition we have focused on improving the check-in area and service with new desks and seating so guests are more comfortable after their flights.

This work follows an extensive refurbishment of all the guest bedrooms last year and we are pleased to announce the final phase of updating the hotel will be to the Drifters Beach Restaurant and Bar in the autumn of this year.

As a premium all-inclusive resort, Crystal does provide a wide variety of activities on and off the premises and guests are encouraged to take advantage of the complimentary watersports on offer including snorkelling, sailing, kayaking and boogie boarding. Our concierge service is on hand to arrange safari tours, glass bottom boat rides and off-property tours of Harrisons’ Cave, St. Nicholas Abbey and other local attractions. We do also provide a complimentary water taxi service for guests who are interested in visiting our other West Coast properties.

Live entertainment is another added extra we feel really allows our guests to get a taste of the real Barbados and we offer seasonally themed dinner nights such as our Bajan Fish Fry on Saturdays where guests can relax and enjoy Caribbean inspired music whilst sampling local Bajan cuisine. We also have a wide selection of cocktails and liquors including premium brands and we will relook at the challenge you experienced.

We hope that you will visit us again and see the continued developments taking place at the resort.

Kindest Regards
