“Divi Dive operation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2012

I am hesitant to write a great review of the dive operaton at Divi Flamingo, because I would prefer to keep it a secret. However, the last review by hutch531 has let the cat out of the bag. My husband and I have been diving here for 28 years . Many people who come to Bonaire rent cars so they can drive to dive sights, but we have never felt the need. Serge and his crew make diving so easy, why do the work?
I can not add anything more to the thorough review by hutch531, except that this dive operation is unique in that it can cater to handicapped clients, many of whom return yearly. Serge and his crew are very reponsive to all requests, they have a large fleet of boats to handle groups as well as non-groups, and they make diving easy and enjoyable.

Highs:
Excellent location within a short walk from the 'town centre' and close to markets & airport.
Well ran and equipped dive operator. A top class house reef (Calabas)
Deluxe ocean view rooms right by the water. Wonderful to sip morning coffee or early evening drink at the balcony. Comfortable beds.
Some of the staff helpful and customer oriented.
Birdlife even on the resort is fantastic. Lots to see and listen to.
Lows:
Private parties at Flamingo Nest can easily force you to change your plans for a quiet or early night in.
The pool areas and pools are not very appealing.
Food at the restaurants is mediocre.
'Live' music from Calabas is mixing up with the Latino rhytms from the Beach Bar speakers.
Business centre is pretty useless - no connections.
TIPS: Oceanfront rooms are nice but the balconies get boiling hot btw 3-6 p.m. Also be aware that the noice from the Flamingo nest bar right upstairs of rooms 106 - 115 may be disturbing during early evening hours. Rent a car (Hertz on the property) well worth it also if you are not planning to do shore diving. The island is great to tour visit the natural park.

Room Tip: Ask for an oceanroom but not one under the Flamingo Nest Bar.

I am a Dive Instructor and I have been traveling with groups to Bonaire for the past 9 years. I always have stayed at the Divi Flamingo Resort. There is no reason to go anywhere else. Their staff and dive operation is second to none. My biggest concerns when bringing a group are safety and ease of diving. The manager of Dive Operations, Serge De Groote and his well qualified staff have always exceeded our diving needs. When you arrive, you are given a very informative Marine park orientation explaining the rules and procedures for diving during your stay. Reef awareness and safety are always stressed. Then a check out dive is done to ensure you are properly weighted and there are no equipment problems. Everything is done to make sure your stay is a very relaxing and enjoyable one. A locker for all of your gear will be assigned to you and a Marine park tag will be issued. Serge manages a very safe and well organized operation. There are Dive Boat bulletin boards that list the time, boat, dive site and dive masters, giving you the flexibility of choosing – any choice will be a good one. As an instructor I always take notice of the dive briefings and how the dive master conducts themselves. One of the things that impress me the most is the consistent standard of procedures that have been always adhered to over the years by the dive masters. The dive briefings, boat entries, safety procedures are always explained. Even during the dive, I notice the dive master is always counting the members of the group. They always know where everyone is at all times and are always available to help both underwater and on the boat. The dives themselves are always great and so many different things are pointed out. To Serge’s credit, a lot of thought and consideration has gone into the Divi dive operation. Lockers, rinse tanks on the dock, availability of defog solution, availability of tanks both on the dock and also in the parking lot for easy loading to your truck for some shore diving, steps for easy shore entry, and platforms for easy handicap access all make for any enjoyable dive for young and old.

The resort itself is located in a perfect location, within a short walk to town. From the time you check in you are greeted like a new friend and for many of us…….like an old friend returning home. Along with the superb diving, it is the beautiful friendly hard working people of the Divi that make it such an enjoyable stay. The wait staff, housekeeping, maintenance workers….everyone always take the time to smile and say hello. I would also like to thank the general manager Sara Matera for making our stay yet another relaxing and enjoyable one. Her attention to detail and concern that you are enjoying yourself are another reason we return year after year.

I look forward to my next group trip to Beautiful Bonaire and my stay at the Divi Flamingo Resort. I look forward to diving with old friends again!!!!!

Room Tip: The studio rooms are fully equipped with a kitchen and are close to the dive shop.

Serge and his team of dive masters are simply the best. The sign up boards allow you to choose boats and times.I have been diving with these folks for over 20 years, they remember where you like to sit on the boat, the size of tank you want and more Additional boats are added as needed The boats have been maintained by staff to the best of their ability but... the boats(engines) are in need of repair/replacement,beyond the capabilities of the staff. The briefings are thorough and diver safety and reef protection are always considered. Many of the DMs have been with Divi for years yet still dive with enthusium and eager to show all the critters. The backyard reef suffered severe damage from recent storms in the past years but you can see signs of new growth and tons of fish life. Bonaire remains a great destination for seasoned divers and beginners alike. I have traveled and dived wordlwide but annually return to Boanire and always enjoy the warm, clear water and comfortable feeling that Bonaire and "Dive Bonaire"provides. The dive dock, lockers and ample supply of tanks makes this an easy way to log a ton of fun diving. I have well over 1100 dives and at least 400 have been with Dive Bonaire and look forward to each return.
The resort have suffered highs and lows over the years. The location is great, can walk to town and restaurants in a few minutes. One complaint is that the resort seems to be open to the general public and at times the pools are overrun with local kids, security seems to turn a blind eye to the complaints.

Room Tip: Barking dogs and street noise are always an issue, oceanfront rooms reduce this problem

Not sure what some of the whiny-complainers were expecting, this was not supposed to be the Ritz! This resort is a Caribbean dive location, and they do a remarkable job. The dive operation is the best I've seen, with friendly, knowledgeable staff, run by the very competent Serge. The diving is AWESOME here, the reef is immaculate, and the fish vary greatly from site to site (and there are hundred's of dive sites). The boat dives were great, and well-organized, and there is the added bonus of diving right from the pier. Shore diving is amazing right at their onw Carrabba's Reef, especially at night. Yes, the check-in service is slow, but it is not the staff's fault that 2 airline carriers arrive at 5:30 am; the web site is very clear about check-in times, and you can avoid an issue by booking the previous night. The staff tries it's best, and our 2 service calls for the a/c and an electrical outlet were handled promptly. We were there November 2011, and will return May 2012, and next year too!

We spent a great week in Bonaire. The resort itself is not a 5-star resort like what I've used before, but this trip was about scuba diving and this is what the resort is about. The restaurant is OK and there are very good restaurants just ouside the property as well. The room is pretty ordinary but still comfortable (I would have preferred a larger bed... the room had two doubles).

Now for the good thing! I would describe the dive operation as friendly, efficient and very well organized. After arriving, we took the mandatory and informative orientation session. Serge is a master!!! We were assigned a locker for the week that is directly on the dock and is very convenient. Then we went diving right from the dock. Although we rented a car and we planned on shore diving around the island during the afternoons, we found the boat operation and dock diving so easy that we used the car only once for diving. I did 18 dives during the week and my wife did 14 dives. We've seen people doing up to 32 dives in 6 days!

The dive masters are great, fun and still safe. This island is for divers and not for baby sitting (although I noticed they can also do that if need be). Before each dive, the dive master sill give a breifing and provide advises as to depth, but we can go our way if we want to. Morning dives are 45 minutes (two consecutive dives) and afternoon boat dives are 60 minutes.

My wife and I used Nitrox all week. We brought our analyzer, but this was not required. The resort has plenty of analyzers to make it easy to prepare.

We took a couple of afternoon just to go around the island by car. These were really neat rides and it is a fun way of offgasing.

Almost every evening, before dinner, we did a night dive off the dock. After seeing the other site, this was not the greatest, but still very nice with a wide variety of fishes.

When we go back to Bonaire, that will be at this resort.

The good: The food was plentiful and pretty good. Breakfast included sausages, hash, boiled eggs, a version of home fries, scrambled eggs, toast, fresh fruit and lots more. They also would cook you an omlette with various fillings as well as pancakes and fried eggs. It was, for the most part, the same each day. Lunch had numerous dishes (plus salad) to choose from and varied more day to day. I only ate dinner there a couple of nights as I wanted to try other places for variety. The last night they served free rum punch & appetizers (conch fritters and couple of other items which were really good).

It's a pretty set-up with lots of lounge chairs at the pool and on the hill overlooking the ocean. Short walk to town where there are shops, small restaurants and a grocery store. Rooms have hair dryers, irons, wall safe, phone, alarm clock, tv, fridge, a/c. On site casino, lawn games. Short jaunt to airport.

Dive boats are well organized, dive lockers available right on the dock (bring a lock). Dive shop on site with various items for sale. You can dive right off the pier - awesome night diving right there! Snorkeling is also very, very good as there are lots of colorful fish, octopus in the rocks under the pier. You can dive Nitrox if you're certified. Bonaire is the place to go for fantastic short diving - the reef is right there!!!!!

The bad: I always expect a slower pace when travelling south of the border, but..... Although checkin is not until 3:00, my room was not ready until 4:00 PM. Most of the time there was only one staffperson on the service desk with a backup of people waiting for assistance. The safe didn't work and after several requests over several days I was finally able to get them to come to fix it (they installed new batteries which was a common problem). With 129 rooms, they need more staff on desk. If you go to pasta night, expect to wait a loonngggg time in line as they don't have a good system for that type of cooking for that many people.
The a/c could not be shut off so the room was freezing. By that time, I didn't want to try and deal with any more problems so I huddled under the covers at night.
...and then there was the main swimming pool. Yes, they "cleaned" it each day, but it was green and needed to be shocked. I wouldn't swim in it. There was a smaller pool in another spot which wasn't as bad.

The ugly:
OMG - there were two women screaming for help because they accidently locked themselves on the balcony at dusk. Luckily, or so they thought, they had a cell phone and called the front desk. TWO HOURS and many, man bug bites later, help had not arrived. Another guest had to go to the front desk to insist they send someone right away (he said he was busy and was the only one on the desk to handle everything). I won't go into all the details but it was INEXCLUSABLE not to respond to their phone call promptly.

All in all, it's an OK place to stay & great place to dive. But, if you need help with something, you'd better be insistant on your first request or you'll end up waiting a long time for assistance in whatever is the issue.

Room Tip: Get a deluxe room right on the ocean. Sit on the balcony and listen to the waves just steps away...
