Worst Resort in Cuba! August 2017 Review!

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 11, 2017
I would not be recommending this resort to anyone.. especially the privileged side.

There is nothing privileged about it!

I have had better hospitality at a lower star rating hotel than here! - SAVE YOUR $! better off going to Bahamas, Jamaica, Punta Cana!

Being on the privileged side you need to be shuttled to and from the main lobby to your room as the walk is 20 minutes. (Plus you have to wait for them to come to pick you up - waiting at least 30 mins!)

We ate at a little restaurant beside the pool in the privelage section - again no selection. I asked for oatmeal 4 days in a row and they never had it! - lunch they ran out of ketchup! And didn't replenish til the next day.

Snack bar & disco is never open.

The main buffet had one row of food! - absolutely zero selection. The servers after asked several times for cutlery & water the response was always one moment please.
We got so fed up and left the food on the table and walked out.

The main lobby bar - fly floating in the frothed milk and when we asked the bartender to throw it out and make a new one they gave us a dirty look!

We had to leave the resort to eat (between taxi rides & eating we've spent over $550 CDN!) (you can highly recommend NONNA TINAS - they have great food!)

Privilege beach was poorly maintained only 4 beach chairs - can't even walk on the sand without cutting your feet on broken sea shells!

later we found out the resort use to have a chef from Spain here - hence the reviews on the food - however he left and locals now cook it. The resort has fallen apart.

Privelage buffet (never open - probably because there was only 5 people on that side)
Hotel is very grimy & dated.
1.) one room has a hole in the ceiling. (A lizard came into the room)
2.) I found a frog on my bathroom sink toiletries.

Bathroom fans didn't work
Water pressure & shower kept turning off & smelt of sewage
We were left with 2 towels (no hand towels)
one side of the bed was lower than the other
TV in the bedrooms don't work.
Ceiling fan sounded like it was going to come off the ceiling!
Bugs Laid eggs in my backpack - i had to leave the backpack in Cuba! absolutely disgusting

This resort is atrocious! Definelty not a 5 star & I would definitely not be coming back here!

Staff is very rude and not at all helpful. Terrible food in all restaurants, similar to a 1 or 2 star hotel. Rooms were not very good either. Cannot be recommended. We stayed for a bit less than a week, and not once were the staff helpful or accommodating.

The room we stayed in was definitely nice, nice bed, nice bathroom and all. However, the food was terrible, we we're not able to enjoy the food, we were basically obliged to order pizza all the time. The staff was far from helpful, not only in the front desk, but also in room service and in the restaurants. Would not stay again there.

I liked this resort. It was adults only and few people. It is ideal for people who love tranquility.
Food in the Privilege Restaurant was OK and lobster dinners everyday if you like it.
There is plenty of champagne around and service is very pleasant.
Cigar bar is excellent.
Rooms are big size and newly renovated (new paint).
Infinity pool is beautiful.
The beach is just out of this world and in my opinion best in Varadero It also applies to Clau Marina of which Privilege is more luxury adult only extension.
Both resorts are served from Blau Marina Lobby. Privilege lobby is not operating which takes away from Privilege glamour..

We're rating this in comparison to a 4 star we recently stayed at in a different country. If I was rating based on what we paid I would give it an extra star, as it was certainly a cheap vacation for us.

The rooms in the adults-only area are very spacious, the tub is huge, the patio is wonderful. As cons, they aren't particularly well maintained (the sheets were stained, the walls had stains) and the king bed was two twins pushed together. None of these were big deals for us, just just an FYI.

I really didn't like the food. I skipped some meals. I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu one day and I couldn't cut through the chicken. My boyfriend didn't love the food but was more neutral. We stuck to pizzas at the Privilege restaurant and the made-to-order pasta in the buffet, which was okay. Both of us got food poisoning or some kind of stomach thing (Hot tip - bring your own pepto or you'll be walking to the marina to buy some kind of antibiotic at the pharmacy).

The drinks :( I was soooo excited to have mojitos. But sometimes they didn't have mint, and even when they did it really just tasted like rum water (I thought maybe I was used to americanized mojitos, but when we had some in Havana they were like night and day). I wouldn't recommend ordering anything cocktail-y. I switched to rum and coke, the BF drank beers and he was happy enough.

The staff were mostly nice. We had no particularly bad experiences. The only people we would call out for being great would be the busboys/golf cart drivers - they were very accommodating (but - understandably - sometimes late.). We also found the service to be friendlier in the buffet than the Privilege restaurant.

THE BEACH! This is the reason to go. It really redeemed the place for me. It's white sand, turquoise post-card beach and bathwater-warm. There are some jellyfish and shells, but it's an ecosystem so ...if you can't deal with that then stick to the pool.

It's about a km from the Privilege to the front reception, so if you have mobility issues it may not be a good fit, even with the golf carts. We liked the walk, but got some bug bites. Again, what happens when you're outside.

Definitely check out Havana. The catamaran tours are okay. Scuba diving was my least favourite caribbean/atlantic dive I've done.

Overall we had a nice vacation. I don't think we would go again, unless we got a crazy good deal.

Room tip: All of the adult-only ones seem nice.

Before reading my review, please remember you have booked a Cuba vacation. This is a country still affected by 60 years of USA embargo and the fall of the USSR ( a monetary supporter).

We booked thru the Lucky 4 Star Adult. Once we knew our resort (about 1st of month that you are travelling) i contacted the resort to ask if something special could be done to celebrate my wifes birthday. It was arranged. As well, I found an email on their website and after including a google translated version in Spanish, our request for a second floor and king bed room was confirmed.

Resort: The Blau Privilege Cayo Libertad was wonderful. The food was not always the best but it was good. It was extremely quiet the week we were there as the check in staff told us on the day we departed there were 368 of 1200 at the Blau Marina and only 44 of 170 at the Privilege. Very quiet resort with no music/games around pool, Very nice for relaxation. Pool chairs was never an issue. Rooms at the resort were huge. The deck had two wooden recliners as well as a pool type lounger. When we arrived the AC was set for 21. By the time we left we had increased to 24. 21 seemed too cold after being outside in 31+ temperatures.

Staff: The Cuban people are wonderful. We did tip early in our trip and again nearer the end. We gave away lots of items to our maid, servers and bartender. The soccer ball I gave to our bartender (Rolando) for his 5 and 8 year only boys was great. With our resort as quiet as it was, we spent time talking with all we came across to learn more of them. I think it was appreciated. We got hugs from a multitude of staff members we talked with on our last day.

Catholic Church in Varadero: We got to the Church to give away our bag of various items. The Church Secretary was appreciative and when we passed by when stopping at the market across the street, he saw me taking pictures of the church and waved. Secretary appears to work 9-2 so if you are donating items your resort can call to confirm someone will be there. Items donated are distributed to the less toured areas of the island.

Havana: Are there really words to describe “Old” Havana!! The buildings are spectacular. Many many of 100’s of millions if not billions to repair all back to their glory.

Heat: OMG, the 30+ temperature and very calm winds the last two days were deadly.

Bugs: Yes, we encountered at the resort but when speaking with others on the bus tour and catamaran tours the other resorts had bugs too. We joked that the perfume my wife worn each evening was Eau du Off!

Room tip: Our Room 2807 was great. Best view room of ocean is 2801.
