We went at the end of October and we had a great time. The staff are kind and friendly. The hotel and rooms are renovated and beautiful. The planned day activities are engaging as well as fun. They play bingo, give dance lessons, etc. The beach connected to the hotel is beautiful and the water is warm. There is also nightly performances which is entertaining. When we went there was a magic show, folk dance performance, a Disney themed show and much more. The buffet food is good. For dinner each night we chose to book at the private restaurants at no extra cost and the food was delicious. Overall great experience and will definitely return for another vacation.

The Good
The beach is one of the finest beaches you will ever set foot on, soft white powdery sand that is so white it never gets to hot to walk on.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. The average wage in Cuba is around 30 CUC per month and in reality they need about 90 CUC to live on so please leave lots of tips for these friendly hard working people, they rely on it.
Food at the Italian and Asian restaurants are very good and I would highly recommend them. The buffet has enough selection that you should be able to find something you like. They also did a pig roast everyday between the pool and the beach. They serve chicken and another cut of pork first which are OK but if you wait until those are gone and they actually start into the roast pig you won't be disappointed as it is excellent.

The Bad
Rooms are outdated, beds are hard and Air Conditioners sound like a train in your room (please bring good ear plugs for the air conditioner noise). Fortunately they are refurbishing and I believe they have finished the first floor and are half way done the second floor. I was not in a refurbished room but I heard they were nice. Just hope they replace the air conditioners when they refurbish. The Tex-Mex restaurant was terrible and I don't think they have any idea what Tex-Mex food is. The Chicken Tortilla soup was a broth, no chicken and no tortillas. The tacos were like nothing I have ever seen and comprised of some sort of small soggy wrap with a few beans thrown in. Pork fajita had little to no spices and again in some weird type of wrap. The only saving grace was the desert. Browny and fried banana were both excellent

The Ugly
We were trapped in an elevator for about 20 minutes when the door would not open, the fan did not work so it became extremely hot very fast to the point I became very frightened for our well being and we had to take clothing off it was so hot. The bell in the elevator to call for assistance also did not work. Our safety was obviously not a priority here to have no way of contacting anyone for help other than yelling. Eventually a worker heard our cry's for help and used a crowbar to get us out. We told customer service who sent up a cheap $5.00 bottle of rum which was not even close to compensation for our horrible and frightening experience

Room Tip: Try to get a refurbished room away from the pool

I had a great few days at Sol Palmeras.
The front desk staff was super friendly and very accommodating. I wasnt able to get a late checkout, however was offered to store my luggage and a room to shower after the 12pm checkout. Which was nice since I didnt catch my taxi until 3pm, was able to enjoy a few extra hours poolside.
The main buffet was good, lots of variety.
Bars were good, always had great service with a smile.
The pool was huge, do lots of places to sit and enjoy. Pool was clean as well.
Also a very short walk to the beach, which was beautiful, with a beach bar and music playing.

I cant wait to go back again.

We booked with a travel agent and had the pleasure of dealing with some amazing staff. We had a bungalow which was so helpful given the massive size of the property. Can’t say I would have had as good as a time if I were in the main building as we prefer to be close to the beach.
Buffet staff were so kind. We really enjoyed our time there. Food was good, yes a little repetitive, but this is Cuba. My advice, 1) make an effort to learn a few Spanish phrases. Helps you communicate and bond better with staff. Google translate has a wonderful ‘offline’ version. 2) Tip, generously. These people work 6 days a week and earn little. Rather than give to charities in Canada where I know majority of the money is given to Admin fees, I take pleasure giving to these people. I also buy gifts and take things I don’t need. Cosmetics, clothing, toiletries. I buy Tylenol, soap and shaving things to give to them. They are very appreciative. Only reason I did not give this a 5, they really need a beach washroom. Given the massive size of the property/beach, going back to the far side of the pool in an emergency isn’t a good thing.
