“Great adult only resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2012

We went to this resort at the end of November with our two friends. We where greeted getting off the coach by very pleasant staff. We where given an invatation to the greetings pary where we was given drinks and nibbles and introduced to the staff. Our rooms where bacic but clean we had groud floor rooms near the quiet pool which we loved. The entertainment staff did a very good job in entertaining everyone and they where so funny. The beach was nice and the staff if not to busy waited on you. The beach vendors selling there goods where a bit annoying but you got used to saying No Thanks and they where very polite. Watch out for the time share people all is not what they tell you, we heard three complaints while we was there by people who had them not getting what they stated. Also DO NOT pay up front by the beach venders one couple paid for a trip up front and when they turned up for the trip, there was no booking and the company had not been given any money ( please be careful). We loved our stay there just lazing on the beach or round the pool. The food was plentfull and lot of choice we was never hungry. Try the restraunts they where good and its a change, if you dont like the food you can always go to the main eating area.

Room Tip: Try to get near the quiet pool if you like going back to your room early because the entertainment i...

The DR is NOT home and going with expectations for it to be "just like home" will only result in disappointment. It's going to be different in even the most basic of ways so expect to have to think outside the box and do some coping! You will have a great time with the right mindset!

We happily give this hotel 5 stars!

First Star is because it's an Adult Only All Inclusive. In our eyes this automatically puts Blue Bay way above the competition!

Second Star is for the PRICE!! Adult Only Resorts, that are reasonably priced, are VERY hard to find! We were delighted to find that this resort was every bit as good as those we had paid up to three times the price for in the past!!!

Third Star for The Property. This is a very, very well cared for resort!! It is one of the cleanest, best maintained resorts we have ever visited.

The beach is easily accessed by a very short walk over a lovely bridge that spans a natural habitat. The beach, like every beach in the DR, is public and does not belong to the hotel. They do a wonderful job keeping it clean and well maintained. The vendors on the beach belong to a Union. They don't work for BB. A "no thank you" was all that was necessary to send them on their way.

Note: The natural habitat the bridge spans is a Salt Water Marsh, not unlike those we have on the west coast of BC. It will smell worse at low tide and better at high tide. They are supposed to smell like that!! This is NOT a dumping area nor is this the place they dispose of their sewage!!!

Fourth Star is for.....The Staff!! We were blown away by how cheerful and friendly the staff are...especially after we found out they work 12 hour days...6 days a week!!! Nothing was too much trouble!! On the odd occasion when someone did forget something or seemed a bit tired...knowing the hours and effort these people put into their job.....we had no problem extending them a bit of courtesy and understanding in return for the excellent service we received at all other times!

Note: The "Yellow Shirts" or Time Share guys. We went expecting the worst...we got exactly THREE "Ola's" from them and not an ounce of trouble more!! Watching them, I have no doubt that when they find a mark they can be brutally persistent. The key is not to give them a chance to even get started with you!!

Fifth Star......The Food!! Oh where to start? There was not a single meal that I did not leave the buffet with serious regret and a tummy over full and painful. We never even made it to the restaurants because we found the buffet was so good and had so much variety.

I would said the North American cuisine at BB is better than most and very plentiful.. It's on par with say....a Denny's buffet.

Our personal preference is all those dishes that you have no idea what they are or what is in them. If it looks fresh and prepared in a local manner it's usually worth a try. We encountered many, many dishes at BB that absolutely astounded us! In North America we have long since sacrificed flavor for convenience and eating at BB was a real treat!!

Note: You do have to wait to be seated. We never had to wait more than a few minutes in line, but we usually ate early or late.

A few tips more....

1) There is nothing wrong with the basic rooms other than a poor choice in color scheme. The fabrics, walls and floor are the color of unbleached cotton....add a yellow light bulb and you cannot hope for anything beyond "dingy"! All they need to do is add some bright colors and these rooms would be lovely!!

Yes everything is old....but remember....third world country here.... there are not a lot of resources available for keeping up with North American standards!!!

We had a large bathroom with a tub/shower combo that was absolutely beautiful! The water is NOT drinkable so bring an extra water bottle for keeping water to brush your teeth with by the sink. We also found that laying the shower head in the tub and letting it run for a few minutes was the best strategy for obtaining hot water. Depending on the demand the wait could be up to five minutes before it would show up!

2) The humidity in the DR is high. Everything smells "musty" when you first arrive so don't freak out when you first enter your room! Trust me you won't notice it after the first 24 hours...or at least not until you get home and open your suitcase!! There are no dressers which is good as you need air flow because of the constant damp! If you need more space, set up the ironing board and lay things out. Bring lots of swimwear because nothing dries overnight due to the humidity.

3) The beds are not "bad" beds. Bad beds are when you have to try to find space between the springs in the mattress for your rib cage! These beds are good. They just have firm mattresses. I sleep on a firm mattress and found them very comfortable. My partner sleeps on a soft mattress and he did not! To each their own!

Pillows are lumpy. That's because they wash them so often. I'll take Mr. Lumpy every time over the smelly, sweaty alternative! At least there are a lot of them! Bring your own if it's important to you.

Towels... I'm pretty sure they have a shortage of towels. You get one a day per person. You really need two as they do not dry between the evening shower and the early morning shower due to the humidity. We only saw washcloths once. We managed by making friends with the lovely lady who does the laundering at night.

Next time we will just bring a set of our own along!

4) What is in the fridge is a "gift" and it is not meant to be restocked. The maids will refill the water jug. If you run out or she forgets you can refill it at the spa.

5) If you don't like their plastic glasses (the #1 gripe I heard on the resort)....then bring a travel mug from home. Eco-friendly, keeps the sand and bugs out and the drinks cold. Travel mugs are also readily available at the plaza if you forget!

6)You must use your key card to turn on the power in the room. Personally I think it's a great idea who's time is long overdue in North America!!

7) The first two nights we were there we had other guests steal the patio set off our patio. Later we found out this was very common for those on the ground floor. Since we like to sit outside and enjoy the evening we finally got smart and brought them into our room when we were not using them.

8) If you wake up with red bites on your legs it is not bed bugs, but sand fleas. Make sure that you use the foot shower after being at the beach...every time. Then go to the pool...shower and immerse....THEN have a thorough shower with a bath scrubbie back at the room. NEVER, EVER put anything from the beach on the bed...including yourself! Those bites HURT and don't go away easily so be careful!!

9) Excursions....Go to James in the Plaza. Right next to Hemingway's. You will NOT be sorry. He's from Georgia and speaks perfect English. He will refund, re-schedule and you can always find him (not something guaranteed with the sellers on the beach). He has videos of each of the excursions that he can show you. He never pushes and will give you a straight answer if you question any aspect of the trip. Best of all he beats every price going. In general....your hotel/airline reps are the most expensive. The beach sellers come down to about 2/3 the price of the reps. James is 1/2 the price of the reps! https://sites.google.com/site/toursbyjames/

We travelled back in June 2011. Weather was a bit wet the first week but soon hotted up. Lovely and humid if you like that sort of heat!

Hotel is fantastic, yes the rooms are basic but you don't spend much time in them anyway. The main thing was they were clean.

Lots of variety of food which sometimes got repetitiveness at the buffet, but most do but it was fresh and hot most of the time. Good food down at the beach restaurant when you fancied a snack!

Beach is grainy but nice and clean with a nice warm sea. This isn't the Carribean side so it isn't quite as green looking as some may think, but its still very nice.

Not much outside the resort, trip to Puerto Plata was eye-opening but nothing special. The staff were generally very friendly, particularly one of the waiting staff who we couldn't fault with his work ethic.

Some improvements would be more glasses at night and another waiter or too for drinks. Entertainment area is too small as well. Great to meet people because of the size of the hotel and everyone is generally friendly.

Would return in a few years at the right price for a cheap break.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms by Infinity pool.

This was a great resort, not sure what others are complaining about. We travelled with friends from Feb. 13 to Feb. 20. We have been to quite a few resorts in Dominican and Cuba and this is by far one of the better one. It is a small resort which is great for getting where you want to go quickly. Everything is clean and the staff are helpful and friendly.

I will start with our room. We were in 2204 which is directly across from the theatre. It usually quieted down around 11 and we didn't have to worry about getting chairs to watch as we would sit out on our balcony and watch the entertainment. It wasn't great but it was funny. They do the best they can with what they've got. The room had two double beds, which, as others have said were hard and had lumpy pillows but we were tired enough when we went to bed we didn't care. The room was cleaned daily and new towels were replenished every day. In the evening our beach towels would be exchanged as well by the maid which was fabulous as the towel hut never seemed to have clean ones.

The food was great at the buffet and the a la cartes. You can always find something good to eat and the desserts were fantastic especially anything chocolate. The wait staff were friendly and always quick to get you what you wanted.

The beach was great and the water was lovely. The beach vendors were doing their job but a polite thank you and they were on their way. They are only trying to make money to provide for their family. Louis and Nelson, excursion sellers, are great. We didn't book any trips with them but talked with them on a daily basis. The beach bar was great as was the food there. It was a limited menu but the fried chicken was fantastic. Every morning the security guard would bring us our chairs and we tipped him every day. You can reserve your chairs but don't be gone too long. People were reserving them and leaving for hours at a time which meant some people didn't get chairs. The staff, after seeing them empty for a very long time, would give them to others that were just arriving at the beach or laying on the sand; proper thing!!!

The plaza is only about a minute walk from here. They have restaurants, souvenirs, liquor and excursions. There is also an internet cafe called Froogies. Not sure how much the internet was at the resort but we heard it was quite expensive so we bought beer and logged on for a few minutes; you will have to ask the one working for the password. Apparently there is a market on the other side of the beach but we didn't make it down.

We met some great people while we were here, A big hello to Jim and Diane from NS, John and Nancy from NF and Basil and Jasmine from NS. If any of you guys read this email me please.

So all in all we were very happy with this resort and what we paid for it. We would return again with no hesitation and recommend it to our friends. Your vacation is what you make it and if you want to find the bad you no doubt can find the bad with anything or everything. We know what to expect and have a great time.

If anyone reading this has any questions they would like to ask please feel free to contact me. You will get an honest an unbiased opinion!!

Room Tip: If you are looking for quiet then blocks 1 and 2 aren't for you.

I'm not sure what all the bad reviews are about. I went with a group of 11 people ranging in age from 23-75 and everyone had a great time!

Rooms: Yes, the rooms are basic, but cleaned daily. We tipped the maids a couple dollars a day and we always got fresh towels and water, and they even gave us some rose petals or fruit plates. A few couples asked to change rooms to avoid stairs or to get a quieter room. Some of the rooms closer to the stage can be noisy during the shows, but the shows always ended around 10:30 - 11:00pm, nothing crazy or super late. And there were no problems in getting rooms changed. The beds were comfy to me and we had extra pillows in our large closet that we used as well. We didn't pay for a room upgrade or anything, but we had a wonderful room with a private balcony that faced away from the resort. So I suggest if you don't like your room initially for any reason, just tell the front desk and they are very helpful.

Food: The food was great and everyone with our group always had something they liked. They have a carving station, a pasta station, and different kinds of potatoes and rice daily in the buffet. Once in a while we had to wait in line to get into the buffet, but never more than 5-10 minutes. We were able to try all 3 a la carte restaurants without any problems (just book the first or second day you are there) The steakhouse/grill was tasty, but not my favorite. The oriental restaurant was really nice inside and the food was tasty as well. The seafood restaurant was our favorite. The waiters were always right there to refill your drink or take away your plate, or bring you another if you were still hungry! Franklin, the food and beverage manager, does a fantastic job!

Grounds: The grounds were beautiful and they were doing simple upkeep to keep them clean and nice while we were there, like painting the edging or the concrete to keep it looking fresh. The beach was gorgeous also. The vendors didn't bother us as all. If we didn't feel like shopping a polite "no thanks" did the trick and they moved right along. But it was the best shopping experience when we did look! They had really nice larimar and silver jewelry and you didn't even have to leave your beach chair! The vendors were hilarious and amusing even when we weren't shopping and they never bothered us while we were just laying out or taking a nap.

Staff: By far the best part of this resort is the staff. They genuinely just want you to have a great time and will go above and beyond to make sure that you do. We fell in love with all of them! Mayo and Coca-cola are a riot and they all knew us by name by the time we left. There was a birthday in our group while we were there and we let guest services know. She ended up with 2 birthday cakes, both personalized with her name and age.

Excursions: We only did one "official" excursion - the waterfall half-day. This is a MUST! You climb up 7 waterfalls only to slide or jump down them after you reach the top. The guides basically drag you up the waterfalls. Warning though: this is tough! It's a hike and you should be a strong swimmer since you're swimming against the current a lot. For snorkeling we hopped in a cab for $60 total (7 people) and went to Sosua where we paid $20 each for and hour of snorkeling on our own private boat with a guide. Then to tour puerto plata, we hired dominic, one of the cab drivers. He was amazing! If you are staying at the resort, ask for dominic to take you around puerto plata. We went to a school to see some children and meet the teachers, then shopping at little stores, then walked along "long beach" and finished the day off with beers along the shore.

Overall the resort was fantastic. I fell in love with puerto plata and the people and wish I could back right away! For the price, this is one of the best places you can book. It's not too big, there are plenty of bars and always food available somewhere for you to eat. Again, the staff is just phenomenal and I can't say enough good things about them.
