“Absolutely Amazing Holiday!”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

My husband and i have visited the Dominican Republic around 9 times, staying at diffrerent hotels each time and i have to say that this hotel is by far the best we have ever stayed in! The Hotel is just amazing, along with fantastic entertainment and the most fabuolus food! This hotel is a real dream holiday and we had a fab time and will definalty be going back, we have already priced it up for the end of the year as we enjoyed it so, so much! The staff are just so nice and nothing is to much trouble for them! They work 24 hours a day to keep all the guests happy! The entertainment staff are so friendly and the shows were fantastic in an evening, they really work hard! Missing it already! can't wait to go back!

We recently returned from a glorious week at Ambar March 15-22, 2012. What a beautiful resort this is. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a cheerful staff member working the reservation desk and I'm happy to say that while we worried a bit about overbooking (reviews read just prior to going), we were given the BEST room on the resort in my view. I had sent a request 8 days prior to arrival asking for building 67 (3rd level) corner and what do you know, I got exactly that. We were in room 67308(corner suite overlooking trees and the ocean). This room is quiet, private and has spectacular views.

I had also sent in a request for a la carte restaurants and am happy to report that those were also provided. We ate at Don Pablo (twice - excellent food and service), the Steakhouse at Esmeralda - Very good steak and Bella Italia (Italian, food was just okay - service very slow) The selection of food at the buffet was really good on all days and the food was pretty good. I can confirm that the service provided at the Ambar is far superior to that of the service we recieved at the Esmeralda at the a la carte restaurants.

The beach is absolutely beautiful and yes there were days where you had to get up a bit early to play the towel game to secure a premium spot on the beach but that did not bother us one bit as we are pretty early risers.

The ladies took in the Dr. Fish Ocean Adventure excursion - highly recommended, 3 hours of pampering, massage, yoga, floating on water, and fish eating dry skin on feet (a little ticklish) but pretty neat.

Staff members Service is very good at the Ambar - all very friendly and courteous. when at the buffet, we often sat in STIRLING's section - this guy is so nice, funny and hard working - our last morning, a few other guests were looking to sit in his section as they too were leaving and wanted ot make sure to say goodbye. Murphy and Wody at the lobby bar are also great guys, so kind and ready to please, alway smilling.

I would not hesitate to recommend this resort to anyone, its a great place. I hope I can return someday soon!

Room Tip: So remember, if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful room with spectacular views - ask for 67308.

Flight:
We were (2) couples flying out of Hamilton, Ontario.
We booked a Transat package thru Trip Central and CanJet handled the flying both ways. We found them very friendly to fly with, food was good and plane just as cosy as every other airline.
Liftoff was a little late in both directions but most of that time was made up in the air.
Arrival:
The airport was very busy as usual but because the $10 was prepaid
we were through the airport and in our IBK Transportation Services van in 30 minutes.
Check-in:
New guests are taken to the Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro lobby first and the quickly shuttled over to the Ambar for check-in at 2pm.
Ambar check -in was quick & painless and our rooms became available in building 65, 3rd floor during check-in.
We were given a warm cloth to refresh ourselfves with and welcome cocktail at check-in.
In minutes we were escorted to our rooms by the bellman who also brought the bags to our rooms. We were on the beach & in the sun by 2:30.
Rooms:
Very well appointed, clean and spacious. The bathroom, shower and toilet were seperated from the main room. The king bed was the second most comfortable of any resort or hotel we have stayed at.
The fridge was always stocked with pop, water, beer, liquor and a bag of Lays.
The room was generally made up by 1pm each day. We needed a light bulb replaced and that took about 1.5 days after the call.(not bad at all)
Beach:
The beach is seperated into sections. For the Ambar & Esmerelda resorts they have there own beach area that is set back from the water. The Bavaro & Punta Cana resorts have the beach front area closest to the water and that was the area we were in all week.
The towel game is at play around the pool and on the beach but you will find many people will arrive early and stay for the beautiful sunrise and the rest of the day, as we did. Signs are posted about reserving. (see attached photo)
You could find a beach location most of the time if you got there by 11am.
The beach walking area is large yet seems small at times because of the large number of people from these (4) Gran Bahia resorts.
We found the drink service in our area of the beach very good.
Cannot comment on the pool as we didin't spend any time there.
Food:
We used the beach/pool buffet most often and were happy with everything they had to offer. The lobby buffet has a larger selection and it was good also.
a la cartes:
We went to the Don Pablo, very good, Bella Italia, good, understaffed I think, El, Olivo, very good and the Maiko Japan, very good and entertaining.
Grounds:
The grounds are very well maintained which I find typical of all of the resorts in Punta Cana.

Ambar Lobby:
We would head to the lobby for a drink most evenings after dinner and found it to be very lively, friendly place with music playing & people free to dance if they wanted.
We found the ladies from Guest Services to be very kind & helpful when ever we spoke with them.
Would we return:
Not sure, while we liked the Ambar a lot we do prefer smaller resorts.

Room Tip: At the Ambar most rooms only offer a view of other rooms and the gardens with very few pool or beach...

My husband and I stayed at the Ambar from March 17-24 and are already wishing we were back there! A week is not long enough to see everything this resort has to offer! Everything is immaculately kept from our room to the pool to the beach and the staff are all wonderfully friendly. We found the food to be quite good - we don't go on vacation to eat, so we're pretty easy to please & don't expect gourmet. If you only go to one ala carte, though, make it Don Pablo - it was excellent! After reading the reviews here before we went, we expected it to be very difficult to find a place to lounge, either by the pool or at the beach, but found that not to be the case. We easily found great spots at the beach no matter what time of day we went down - the pool was a little more difficult, but we did manage to find decent spots when we went. We did two excursions - zip lining and the sailboat adventure - and would highly recommend both, especially the sailing - it was soooooo much fun! We have many other places that we would like to visit, but if we go back to Punta Cana, we would definitely go back to the Ambar.

Room Tip: We lucked into a corner room in Building 70 backing onto the trees - thought we wanted to be closer...

We stayed at the Ambar during January and i must say it was absolutly perfect, The Ambar is the adults only section and that was a major blessing. The hotel is out of this world The Staff are just fantastic and so friendly and the food is amazing, with such a choice if you are a fussy eater you would certainly have no problems. The Thai restaurant was wonderful and the chef is quite happy to have photo`s taken while he cooks the food infront of you. All in all you just couldn`t ask for more it was the most perfect 2 weeks we have had away

This is my 6th trip to Dominican republic and always at Bahia Principe Hotels
The Ambar is what I call value for money.
The staff is very friendly, the rooms are brand new state-of-the art and extremely clean, the pool is quite, the beach face it and the restaurants have great food and are not crowded.
I travel a lot all around the world and here I feel quite at home.
Next spare time, once again I will be there.

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing the pool.

This was our first trip to the Ambar, and we were suitably impressed. As others have mentioned, the beach is great, the rooms are lovely, the grounds are spotless and the service is, for the most part, outstanding. However, there are a few things you need to keep an eye out for.

DINING

The attitude of some of the servers occasionally makes it seem like the Ambar is a summer camp for teenagers. Occasionally, the waiters at the buffet are a bit too "engaging". They will jabber back and forth with each other and spend too much time "flirting" and not enough time serving. To me, this is disrespectful to the vacationers, who pay good money to be "served". At the Ambar buffet, for example, lunch was always chaotic because there weren't enough tables, and many of them were not properly set. At the A La Carte restaurants, such as Don Pablo, the lack of atmosphere is palpable. No music played in the background and nothing to distinguish that restaurant in the way of decor, lighting, etc. The food is outstanding at Don Pablo, but it would taste a whole lot better with a nice little vibe and personality to enhance the dining experience. My wife and I really looked forward to sampling different types of food, and we would taste just about everything, and really got excited about certain dishes, savoring them and commenting on their flavour. Most other folks seemed to just shovel their food into their mouth's without seemingly enjoying their meal. Pity. It was almost robotic, and I noticed very few smiling faces at the buffet.

ROOMS
Lovely, spacious, clean. The maid service was hit and miss when it came to re-stocking the mini bar and getting us an extra blanket, etc. Nothing serious, but when you tip them cash and give them other little things (nylons, make up, etc.) it should translate into better service. It didn't with us.

POOL
The towel game is quite funny, especially when you see the men guarding their lounge chairs at 7 in the morning. We found the people at the pool to be quite different from those on the beach. In fact, it seemed the very large people stayed close to the pool, and the one's who were just there to drink stood at the pool bar all day and then got rowdy later in the afternoon. We enjoyed the water aerobics class with William.

BEACH
A little thin at spots because the tide was quite high. But the sand is lovely and completely non-abrasive. We walked every day and quite enjoyed seeing the world take it's shirt off in front of us. I have never seen more uninhibited people on a beach in my life. Loved it!
My wife did some topless sunbathing and nobody gave her a hard time (although there were some hard looks)

OVERALL
We're fairly picky, and couldn't quite give this resort 5 stars, but then again, it would have to be almost perfect. It's quite a large resort, and there's no shortage of things to do here. We played tennis every day, did a little gambling at the casino and had a very relaxing time. Not sure if we'll go back, but we enjoyed it nonetheless.
