Great staff and excellent location. In fact I am so impressed I will be writing the hotel and commending their operations. The staff were helpful, rooms were fantastic and the food was pretty good. My only suggestion is to find some real salad dressing but that is a very minor complaint. I will be going back to this resort and have already recommended it to family and friends.

We had a great time at Bahia Principale Ambar. The staff was friendly and courteous with the exception of the Guest Service ladies. They were short and almost rude, not helpful. Everyone else was super! Jorge was the best and went out of his way to make sure we were happy and satisfied. The lady (I forget her name) that took care of us when we arrived was also extremely helpful and kind. She worked with Jorge and made us feel at home. Our rooms were always clean and stocked with needed items. We loved the food and the service at all of the restaurants. We would certainly come back!

I stayed at Gran Bahia Principe Ambar Apr. 15-29, 2012 with my wife and that has been a great vacation. Ambar is essentially a section of the GBP complex which is way larger. Ambar guests can access various facilities (such as a la carte restaurants) at the other GBP parts, while the Ambar pool area and the beach are for Ambar guests only. This results in Ambar being less busy as opposed to, for example, Bavaro. Furthermore, my observation is that Ambar staff (having less people to serve) is more welcoming and friendly than that of Bavaro. This observation was also supported by what photographer Henry told us, the guy who took awesome pics of us. And a single encounter in the Bavaro lobby shop showed us that staff there was more tired of customers than that of Ambar lobby shop.
In other words - if picking GBP complex - Ambar would be the best choice!
Rooms are clean, comfortable and of good size, mini bar and lots of bottled water. The idea to have an umbrella in each room seems very bright!
There is a bathtub and a shower, but in our case the bathtub turned out leaky.
The pool is pretty large, with a swim up bar, everything clean. Pool works until 6 PM. Personally i think they could make it at least 7 PM, but it is not a big deal. Anyway, ocean is so so close, especially in our case, our villa was just the closest to the beach. Beach is very clean and taken care of and even the beach stuff is extremely friendly and looking forward to serve you in every smallest way!
The lobby with bar and buffet Palmyra are very clean and good. All the desinfection they could take care of i gather, but... i believe that spinach I ate during the lunch gave me amoebiasis. That was very unfortunate on the last night of my stay there.
I don't think Ambar is to blame here, it could happen to anyone anywhere, especially in a tropical country, but still worth mentioning.

Stayed in Ambar form 17/4/2012 till 1/5/ 2012. I had a great time there. The facillities are very good. The complete staff is friendly and is always busy to make your stay full of comfort, pleasure and help or assists. The complex is beautyfull and with a high service level. It's is clean and complete. The food is very good and of high standard. If you have a busy life, Bahia Principe Ambar is the place to be for reloading/recharge your battery.

I stayed on this resort March 5-12 and April 22-29. Both times were fantastic. The service was top notch, food good, and staff exceeded all expectations! Absolutely would recommend a stay on any part of this resort! This was my 4th time to the resort. On return this time We received VIP service. Christian and Emmanual went above and beyond to make our trip wonderful. The lobby, restaurants, and bar staff work very hard and provide excellent service! The beach bar staff, Quintion, Yunior, and Kelvin were superb. Alex Titon, entertainment staff, "I love u for free" was the highlight of our days and nights! Denni, entertainment, was also fantastic! The only complaint, 7 days was too short.

I highly recommend this resort. I will be returning!

My wife and I stayed at the Ambar and overall, it was just okay. Staff was very nice and George the butler was very accommodating. Here's a run down:

Pro:
Beautiful resort
Great pool - Ismael and Elvis the bar tenders were great!
No kids (18+ resort)
Staff very friendly - though none spoke English very well.
Rooms very nice and clean, though we didn't find anything particularly special about them.
Breakfasts at the buffet(s) were good - but no cream, only milk. No biggie.
Lunch was good
Food in general was just "okay".
Safes in room are free.

Con:
The lobby can become like a smokey bar!! There is no smoking inside the lobby but the smoking section surrounds the inner lobby so where do you think all the smoke goes?? It was terrible!
Drinks - not so good but at this "all inclusive" you can PAY for top-shelf drinks
Wine - terrible
No internet in the rooms unless you pay $10/day that will last over a 24 hour period.
Coffee in the lobby that you can help yourself to BUT in PLASTIC CUPS!!! Are you kidding me? I couldn't believe this when I saw it.
Dinner reservations very difficult to get (unless you get the butler service) but even then....you will only get late-seating reservations - even though the restaurants are not even half full.
You can email in advance but even then, it's a crap shoot.
YOU WILL HAVE TO GET TO THE BEACH BEFORE 5:30AM TO GET A GOOD SPOT! (NUTS!)
YOU WILL HAVE TO GET TO THE POOL BEFORE 7:30AM TO GET A SPOT!
(NUTS!)

Some other insight:
Take a taxi from the airport to the hotel: $38 and takes only about 25 minutes tops.
You will need to have your confirmation e-mail when you arrive at the hotel in order for them to check you in.
Pillow service is free but it's no big deal. If you want a lavender pillow, all they do is spray it with a LOT of lavender scent. That's it. It doesn't cost any extra but it's not a big deal.
Butler service is FREE and is a good idea if you want to get better dinner reservations. Ask for George. He was very good.
The Bavaro Runners excursion was just okay. The best part of it was lunch. That was great! The horseback riding was very short and the poor horses looked under nourished.
Tipping is appreciated but we really didn't notice a difference in service whether we tipped or not. The main reason why we tipped is because the staff works their butt off - and for very little.

Oh and when you arrive at the Punta Cana airport, it will cost $10/person to enter the country, so be prepared for that. Then go directly to the taxi's, otherwise people will try to "help" you only to bring you to kiosks where other people try to sell you something. Remember, NOTHING is ever free.

Lastly - there is no need to stand so close to the person in front of you or continue to bump the person in front of you in the buffet line. I promise you - they will not run out of food. This REALLY ticked us off.

Even though the Ambar was okay, we wouldn't go back. However, Canadians seem to really like this place! :-)

Room Tip: Building 67 is the closest to the restaurants, beach and pool.

I have been to Dominican Republic several times through the years, I found the Ambar part of the Gran Bahia Principe one I would return to speedily, if we were looking for a bit less expensive a trip, and wanted to control costs (via all inclusive). The pool near Ambar is fantastic, and the beach is grand too. The ocean is a bit forceful for non-swimmers like my wife,-- but beautiful and clear, sandy ocean floor. The rooms and grounds of the whole complex were immaculately kept. With the mega 4(5?)-in-1 Gran Bahia Principe hotel complex connected by shuttle things, there are many restaurants, pools, and places to hang out. The little agora area with stage shows, surrounded by little (tiny) shops and tiny casino -- not great but pleasant to peruse, the nightly entertainment indoor stage, the theme drinks in the lobby of the main hotel... it's more to do than the typical one hotel resort. The food (I can only speak of Ambar and some of the a la carte restos) is the best I've had in Dominican republic (to say, decent-to-good compared elsewhere) was nicely presented. We are likely going back this month.
