“The Esmerelda is Fantastico!!”
Reviewed 30 June 2012

Just got home yesterday from a week at the Esmerelda. All I can say is fantastic! A few glitches-- nothing big-- but I'll get to that. The point is I booked based on the reviews here on Trip Advisor and you are reading this review because you are considering this hotel. Book it!! Don't hesitate- it is the most beautiful property on the Gran Bahia Principe Punta Cana property and trust me-- this property is huge. The Esmeralda's four buildings are the closest to the beach and oh what a beach it is!

Here is my low down:

The front desk-- Esteban and Olga were amazing and so accommodating. There was a glitch with our room- but Esteban worked hard and got us a perfect room in Building 91.

The room-- Super clean, spacious, and tons of little touches that make you feel so comfortable. A pillow menu-- a very comfortable bed, chocolates at night, clean towels throughout the day. Marilennis- our personal butler-- yes! Everyone has a butler. Marilennis was so helpful, friendly and always asked us if we needed anything.

The pool-- here's glitch #1. It's too warm. I know that it's super hot out and keeping the pool's temperature cool may be tough-- BUT-- they really have to figure this out. It just wasn't fun or relaxing-- laying out in the sun and jumping into a pee-warm pool. (Sorry!!)

The trams-- getting around this enormous property is made easy with the trams that transverse the grounds. But a nice evening stroll is also easy -- although we did get lost the first night.

The restaurants-- I know that meals at all-inclusives can be very hit or miss. NOT HERE!! The food at all the 'ala cartes' we went to were phenomenal-- no joke! Besides being beautiful facilities with impeccable service from the person filling our water glass to the waiters. We went to the following restaurants:

Bella Italia
Garden Grill
Don Pablo
El Olivio

Don't hesitate to go to any of them but my favorite was the Don Pablo.

The Jazmin buffet for the Esmerelda property was also great. We did breakfast and lunches here without complaint.

Pueblo Principe-- is the local "town" area on the Gran Bahia grounds-- it houses several stores, outdoor vendors, several bars, a huge outdoor sitting area with a stage-- that had a live band on two of our four nights. And the casino-- ahh-- the casino-- glitch #2. A tiny closet of a casino with a handful of slots, two roulette tables and 3 blackjack tables -- that it. Not horrible-- but what is horrible is that they charge you for drinks!! That's right-- anywhere on the property you can get a free drink but you have to pay for drinks at the casino. Unheard of!!!! Couldn't even get a glass of water!

The beach-- beautiful, blue waters.Palm trees everywhere. Lots of chairs and not as many little huts but I found you have to get up VERY early to get a good spot. A lot of water sports leave right from the beach so it got a little noisy sometimes. Not a big deal to me.

Overall-- a truly fabulous trip. Thank you, Esmerelda!! Can't wait to see you again.

My wife and I spent a glorious week at the Esmerelda in June 2012. We celebrated our ten year anniversary and loved everything from the room service to the bars and everything in between. The staff was always friendly and eager to assist with anything you wanted. Bartenders were top notch, knew how to make any drink you threw at them and always in a good mood. Particularly we enjoyed the pool bar at Esmerelda, it never got near as busy/loud/drunk as the main pool and we liked it that way. The beach was lovely, plenty of chairs and stuff to do. The food was great at the buffet breakfast/lunch and dinner. The a la cartes were all booked ahead via email making that part of the trip that much nicer. One thing about this resort overall it's huge, the esmerelda section is fairly compact but getting from the front lobby back to the Esmerelda I recommend the trolley system. About the only real problem I can recall is the on-site casino I strongly advise against. Grab the cab ride to the Hard Rock, much nicer and an honest game. Be aware the casino on the Gran Bahia property is not owned/operated by the resort, and in my opinion should be avoided. Overall we would recommend this resort to anyone. I'll be glad to answer any specific questions, assuming of course my man John doesn't beat me to it.

Room Tip: 3rd floor is the way to go in our opinion, quieter and no one is above you.

I took my 16 year old here last summer and am considering a return visit in August. Having stayed at two other resorts in Punta Cana, most recently, Barcelo Premium, we expected the pools to be nice, the room comfortable and the food, eh. We were pleasantly disappointed :) The facility was beautiful and the service, exceptional. Most surprisingly, the food was delicious. We never had to wait very long at any of the bars for a drink and the table service was polite and prompt. Granted, this place was about 30% higher priced then Barcelo but, while the extra money paid for a better facility and food, it also eliminated a lot of the rif raff and loud clientele of lesser resorts. They also don't allow pushy vendors in our area. The resort itself is rather small but you do have unlimited use of the other Bahia resorts on the property including their pools and restaurants. Because Esmerelda is at the top of their offerings, people staying at other places were restricted. This means that there was never a wait for a table, a drink or, most importantly, a lounge chair. Highly recommended.

My partner and I just got back yesterday from an amazing stay at Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda. I had done a lot of research into the resort before choosing this one and had also read every review (good and bad) on trip advisor. I want to start by saying how amazing and wonderful everyone we encounterd at this resort was. The staff are all very friendly and accommodating and will do anything to make your stay as wonderful as possible. A big hug to Nicanor who made our every moment at the resort a wonderful one.

I had e-mailed ahead to request a room and luckily for us we got exactly what we asked for (knowing though it was only a request so we could have gotten anything). We were in building 90 room 90113 pool facing, 2nd floor and it was perfect! Now I know there is some construction (new resort) going on around buildings 93 and 94. It does start early so if you do get put in that block you can always request to move, we met one family who was able to move. So if you're kind and polite they will try all they can. But keep in mind the hotel is usually full.

Esmeralda is the smallest and newest of 4 Bahia Principe resorts in the area (Ambar, Punta cana, Bavaro and Esmeralda). In my opinion ours is the best, the punta cana next door was a great place to head to if you wanted a bit more of a party but could easily leave that atmosphere if you wanted. There is so much to do at the resort, there are shows every night in the Punta Cana theatre, all of which were amazing! Go to them all the audience participation ones are so much fun, try to get up on stage like we did!! All of the restaurants we went to were amazing, our favourites were Maiko and Don Pablo (which we went to twice, get the filet mignon and banana foster!!) We had no problem getting up early and grabbing ourselves a cabana by the beach, which is beautiful. The grounds are immaculate and the staff work so hard and so late in the evening washing everything. Our room's were always kept clean and we even got a rose petal jaccuzi with champagne for our anniversary which was amazing!!! We usually headed to the snack bar for lunch which had a really nice selection of foods, Jose was amazing and always treated us great, he was so sweet and even gave us a bottle of wine for our room!

Now as I mentioned before there have been some so so reviews on this hotel of people complaining. Now we saw many people complaining while we were there but they were usually people being rude to the staff because they couldn't understand them or they were being difficult or demanding. Keep in mind you are in the Dominican, things move a little slower because you are supposed to be relaxed. And honestly a little spanish goes a long way. My partner and I are both from Canada and don't speak spanish but we learned and picked up little phrases while we were there and it made a huge difference to the staff because they see you trying. If you go in with a good and happy attitude it radiates back towards you. If you always have a sour look on your face and are rude you'll probably get treated the same way back.

We already cannot wait to come back to this resort and highly recommend it to anyone considering it but maybe are on the fence about it because of some bad reviews you've read. Those people most likely aren't satisfied with anything so please don't listen to them. Thanks and if you have any questions feel free to message me!

Room Tip: Buildings 90-92 are all great. Building 90 is closest to the beach :-)

Just got back from an amazing week at G.B.P. Esmeralda where we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. The food, service and ambiance was exceptional. We did 4 a la carte restaurants (Maiko - very good); (Belle Italia - amazing);(Garden Grill - amazing as well and (Don Pablo Gourmet - a little disappointing in that our expectations were very high and unfortunately were not met as the food & service was a little stiff)

We had a great time at the beach all week; loved our Pina Colada's,Margerita's and Cappuccino's at the lobby. The food at Jasmin was outstanding with a very good variety and a special hello to Jesus who went out of his way to make us feel special all week. The chefs at Jasmin would come out constantly to make sure that the food was fresh.

The rooms were spotless - we were in building 92 and overall the service and smiles from all the hotel staff was exceptional all week

Although that there was construction next door it was not a problem for us and we would walks throughout the G.B.P. complex every night which is huge; The trolley service was excellent as well.

This was our second time at G.B.P. ; we just got back home a few hours ago and we miss the place already. We definitely plan to go back again soon.

I will not describe it as IT IS like the rest of the reviews. Location, food, service, staff as they say very good for a relaxing holiday with nothing to do, but enough if you want to stay within resort. The swimming area at the beach is at low tide too narrow. A large area is cordoned of to allow for water sports so when in the sea you only bob up and down like the rest of them. Snorkling, there is nothing to see.The sand is not as white as descirbed and you do have seaweed. Not a lot but enough to spoil the look. If you sit in the beach area for Esmeralda Guests it is just constant noise from the building site, beepers from reversing vehicles, vibration from the rollers and hammering from the joiners. When you sit at the pool area I would recommend by the bar as the noise from the music drowns out construction site. They started at 7.30am and finnished at 7.30 pm. Pool water very warm sometimes uncomtortable. The Esmeralda is not the easiest to get out and about from so you are restricted. Excursions are expensive, the most expensive I have come across but enjoyable, except Saona Island no different to where you are. Putting all that a side for a relaxing, clean, friendly holiday then give it a go. I would say quiet but the building works........ WE couldn't sit out out on the balcony with out hearing it. Only thing that spoilt a would be perfect time. We didn't need any repellents as we were not bothered by mosquitos. Dont wear any smelly's. Don't let this review put you of as the pros far out way the cons. Worth a visit. See my reviews for swimming with sharks, Zip linning and island trip.

After staying in the GHP in Mexico we decided to give the Esmeralda a go in the Dominican Republic. It was fantastic. I don't know about the other resorts in the GHP but staying in the Esmeralda allowed you to uze your own private buffet, private beach and private pool, as well as using everywhere else. The location/service/food was really good and I would love to go back one year.

Room Tip: Stay in the Esmeralda, its worth the extra money as your guaranteed a sunbed at your own private bea...
