“Near perfect getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2012

IWe just returned from Mo Bay and I have to say the stay at the Half Moon Resort was as good as it gets.
I was in Jamaica for business, my wife was able to tag along and we extended our stay by a few days to enjoy a few days of warmth and sunshine. We stayed in one of the Hibiscus suites - great location, close to everything and just steps to the beach.
I should mention the beach at this resort is just ok (especially for swimming) - but - they have plenty of room for sunning and pools galore.
My wife enjoyed an afternoon at the Spa while I attended meeting, she claimed one of the best spa experience of her life – she had her treatment in one of the resorts overwater cabanas.
I think what I liked best about half moon was that the resort made you feel like you were actually in the Caribbean. My last trip to Mo Bay I stayed at the Ritz, and while it is a beautiful hotel it felt like a hotel. Half Moon felt like a resort.
We will be back.

Room Tip: Try the Hibiscus suites - great location

We planned a last minute get-away and spent a week at Half Moon resort in Jamaica. We stayed in a Hibiscus sweet that was in the middle section of the resort right on the water room 128 it was beautiful. We have stayed at many beautiful resorts in some spectacular locations but what sets Half Moon apart is the staff. They are genuinely friendly and seem really engaged in making your stay flawless. The minute you step into their lounge at the airport you feel like a VIP. Everyone smiles, says hello, asks how you are, where are you from, they seem so interested in your well being. A good example is one morning we were sitting on our balcony and one of the grounds keepers walked by, he said hello and asked us if we wanted a fresh coconut, he cracked one open right there for us and poured the coconut water in our glasses with a huge friendly smile.

Activities we enjoyed: Bicycle rides around the property, walks on the 2 mile long beach, windsurfing, getting to know the people of Half Moon, and last but not least watching the dolphin encounters. The Yoga classes get a special mention from me, outstanding! The Hatha instructor Gabby was fabulous and the classes in the spa hut on the water were heavenly and not to be missed.

Dining: We signed up for the Half Moon plan and it was well worth it. We loved dinner at the italian restaurant (homemade pasta), the Seagrape Terrace had a wonderful al a carte menu, as well as the Sugarmill. They had some of the best desserts we have ever tasted. We did not visit the other restaurants and tended to avoid the buffets which looked great but were more family oriented. After the first 2 days we skipped the breakfast and lunch buffets and ordered in room dining which was exceptional white table cloths and ocean front.

Observations: A great place that can be as relaxing or as active as you want it. It's so spread out, if you want quiet and romance you can find it. On the other hand if you have kids and want more of a family vacation they've got that too. The county club set will have a great time here with the tennis and golf. Swimming beaches at the West and East end of the property. Half Moon, Ya Mon!

Room Tip: They all seemed good.

For the second year my partner and I visited the Half Moon Resort in Montego Bay for a two week vacation to get away from a rather cold and rainy Scotland, We were not disappointed, There are not enough superlatives to describe this hotel. The food is fantastic, the staff and wonderful service are second to none that we have experienced from South Africa to Europe to the Emirates. We had never revisited a resort until the half Moon and are making plans already to book for next February. The Half Moon Golf resort is excellent and a great challenge. The White Witch, although difficult, is absolutely beautiful locaed high in the hills.
Unfortunately Cinnamon Hills for the second year running, in our opinion, was not so great, although some of the holes are beautiful we found the course to be slightly neglected, the staff not so pleasant or attentive and the caddies a little arrogant for us.

An all inclusive plan is highly recommended, the value for money from premium drinks and choice of Buffet or A La Carte dining at all meal times is tremendous, off plan can work out expensive. The accommodation is excellent, the standard superior room was super last year but the Hibiscus Suites were fab and highly recommended. The standard of cleanliness is excellent throughout the hotel, the resort is beautifully kept with landscaped gardens, white sandy beaches and a large range of activitites.

Our thanks go to the many members of staff who looked after us during our vacation, Jourdan, Pauline, Stacian, Teana in the Seagrape restaurant. Elijah and his team at the Cedar Bar - Caswell, Anthony, Wills, Marlon, Jerome and Roxwell. San-Jaye our wonderful caddie who had the patience of a saint raking the multitude of bunkers we found ourselves in. And many thanks to Spencer Edwards for his fabulous golf lesson which gained me 50 yards on my drives from the very next day. The 19th Hole which we frequented often was always a highlight with Milford and his huge smile and Sheena and Kameika. Donnine and Dale at the extremley busy Pool bar work so tirelessly throughout the day to rehydrate their guests and always with a smile. And last but not least to Willesley Watson aka 'Superman' who's sixth sense appeared with the courtesy bus every time we needed him.

These people made our holiday, with their kind words and attention to detail and wonderful personalities, we can not thank you enough.

Fiona & Blair

We recently returned from our second vacation at Half Moon Bay. It was even better than the first. This visit we decided to try the Royal Villas. It was one of our best family vacations. For the readers it is important to note that this comes from a very opinionated traveler. The Villa was well appointed, quiet large and the staff was fantastic. We stayed in a six bedroom villa. Each room had a king size bed (double beds can be brought in) and their own full bathroom (the bathrooms need some modernization which is underway but they are clean and very nice). The bedrooms have their own access key (the room keys can open all the rooms) which allows for privacy if going with other families. The common area was very nice, clean and loads of fun. The private pool was perfect, especially after a day at the beach to relax and take a private dip. The villa team really added to the experience (butler, cook and housekeeper). They were truly amazing! Each day we ate at the villa for breakfast, snack (cookies and brownies) and 2x for dinner (we also had lunch a few times; the family is responsible for the food but the villa team will order and it will be delivered from the commissary). The food, attention and overall friendliness really made such a difference -- one could not expect more. All of our excursions or activities were planned and the villa was very clean (each house has its own laundry area too which is a major plus). The meals were excellent and the service is truly first rate. We have gone to many other resorts such as the Four Seasons and stayed at private homes but this was a totally different experience. For families there is no better vacation. The Hotel itself is first rate. Restaurants are good with the Sugar Mill the strongest. There is lots to do on the property: tennis, exercise, golf, bike riding, water sports, dolphin swim, horseback riding and a terrific kids camp (although our kids are older). While I have read in some reviews that the Royal Villas are far from the main hotel, this is not really true. It takes no more than 5 minute to drive in a golf cart or a 10 minute bike ride (which is very nice) and it is encompasses in one property. We would strongly recommend the horseback riding in the ocean (the horses swim but it is work to stay on) and the dolphin swim. There is also a fun barbeque with a show for the kids. The hotel staff is also very helpful and especially pleasant. Half Moon is 10 minutes from the airport but note that the Jamaica airport is very busy so try and avoid weekend travel -- can otherwise a very long time to get through customs during peak season as there are extra flights on the weekends. We have stayed stayed in the Hibiscus suites and the Royal Suites. They were very beautiful but for a family or groups of friends I would strongly recommend the Royal Villas. We will be returning for a third visit this winter.

My wife and I recently spent a week at the Half Moon resort in Jamaica and consider it our best vacation yet. We went down (from Washington, DC) for our ten-year anniversary and now plan to go back on a regular basis. You see the commercials of Caribbean vacations, but it can be hard to believe that the reality matches up with the highly staged photos of commercials. Well, it does. We had a small cottage with french doors that opened, literally, on to a porch and the beach. Blue-green water was 20 steps from our porch, framed by swaying palm trees. No matter where you go on the resort -- your room, one of the restaurants, running, horseback riding, walking, whatever -- the beautiful water of the small bay is always within sight.

We purchased the all-inclusive golf package and highly recommend it, if you like to golf. Half Moon is a fully self-contained resort, complete with a Robert Trent Jones championship golf course. This package not only allows you to play golf on the Half Moon course, but you can also play one of the other two excellent courses on the island. You can also get lessons at the Half Moon Golf Academy. The director of the academy, a former European Tour pro named Spencer Edwards, is a fantastic instructor. He helped my game with only one lesson. If it weren't quite such a trip, I'd go back for lessons every week. I was a little nervous that I'd have a caddie, as I'm not a great golfer, but the caddies are all trained to know every inch of the course and they provide friendly, laid back advice as you line up for you shot.

If you're thinking about Jamaica (or the Caribbean), think about Half Moon. You won't be put up in a highrise room; you'll be on the ground floor, beach level, with an extremely friendly staff everywhere you go.

There are two things I'd encourage Half Moon to address:

1. Get a better selection of wines
2. The tipping situation is confusing and vexing. Half Moon automatically includes a 20 percent tip -- pretty much on anything you do. With an all-inclusive package, like the one we got, this makes sense, as dinner and drinks are included. However, you still sign bills for everything, and they all come an area to include tips. I get the idea of adding a tip if you are extremely happy with your service and want to make it more than 20 percent, but with the tip line added to everything, it creates some confusion -- should you always tip more? if so, what is reasonable? If you don't tip, are you giving a sign of displeasure with the service? Yes, you can figure it all out -- it's just unfortunate that the resort puts you in this awkward position.

the two of us wanted a quick getaway for a weekend, so we wanted someplace 'on the beach', 'nice', 'good spa' and close to the airport. Half Moon fit the bill. The transportation from the airport was quick and easy. The grounds a really very nice. While the project is HUGE, and it's hard to keep such a big resort clean and pristine, the folks at Half Moon do a great job. The staff upon check-in was very nice and the process was quick and easy. Needless to say, we were off the plane and by the water within 1 hour's time, which is exactly what we wanted.
Generally, our villa was very nice. Just steps from the water, it was really very nice, clean and large enough for two people to enjoy themselves. The positives include the service - outside of the beach waitresses - eveyone from top to bottom was great, the choice of activities, and the grounds. The negatives were the evening food choices - the Pub was desolate and not good. We ate at Sugar Mill the second night, and it was marginal at best, but the atmosphere and service were really good. The beach waitresses were really slow, and frankly hard to find.
Overall, very good. Will definately return, and when the kids are older will bring them along - seems like a tremendous family resort.
