Couples Sans Souci
Ranked #4 of 35 Hotels in Ocho Rios
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 10 March 2012

we have holidayed twice at Negril and decided to try the other side of the Island. I spent a lot of time researching the two Couples resorts as we knew the brand and decided that Sans Souci was the one for us.

Absolutley beautiful, it fitted us brilliantly.

Sans Souci reviewers will talk about the huge number of stairs to climb, but this adds to the charm of the resort and gets you moving a bit during the holiday! We stayed in C block, more on this later as it is so often not reported on.

For those who were in F and G yes I can appreciate a trip back to the room several times a day would be a pain as you do have to go up and down stairs. We have always found that if we get up early (our favourite time of day) take our things to the pool or beach and stake our spot, we can watch the resort come to life long before breakfast starts in the Palazzina. There is something wonderful about sitting at the side of the pool at 7.00am and enjoying the early moring sunshine in FEBRUARY!!!!! We seldom return to the room before 5pm, other than to change after aeobics or put contacts in after breakfast.

We did watch with amusement some people coming down with towels etc before 7 am and claiming their spot, then going back to their room and not appearing much before 11.00! Still we prefer the mornings and use the sunbeds to sit and read.

Food:
Breakfast in the Palazzina is lovely, it is smaller than the negril equivalent which gives it a cosy feel. You can eat inside or out. Needless to say again outside is our preference. Lots to choose from fruit / pastries/ cereals/ toast and bagels / hot cooked / sausages/ bacon/ ackee / eggs etc made to order omlette and waffle station. You can have room service and there is a lot to choose from for this also. We had this one morning when we were off early in the morning for an excursion so we didn't have time for a relaxing breakfast.

Lunch, we alternated between beach bar and the palazzina, depending on whether we wanted a salad and dessert or burger and fries. You can eat a full three course lunch at the palazzina - salad, cooked lunch and dessert (there is always an icecream or sorbet on loads of cakes and pastries and often local delicacies to tempt you too). sometimes it is themed , roast meat or curry or oriental or just a cooked dish.

Dinner
You have to book for the fine dining Casanova (we ate indoors on the only one time that we ate there) the food was lovely but for us the brighter lights and fast service (it was anything but slow - in and out in an hour, 4 course plus coffee) meant that there was not the romantic ambience of the Palazzina or Bella Vista. You could book outside , but these go quick so make sure you book in advance!

Palazinna (also has to be booked) was our favourite as the lighting was just right (sitting outside there is lighting but also the moonlight) and the food amazing. Eating outside to the sound of tree frogs is fabulous, you can see couples enjoying a private dinner on the beach from the palazinna.

Bella Vista, hard to get more romantic than this place as you are eating practically on the beach, the trees are lit up and the atmosphere is great. However you need to time it right, We found getting down when they opened around 6.45 was the easiest anything after 7.10 and you were having to wait at the bar for a table. Food was great but the drinks service a little slow, I was the only person drinking wine on one side of the restaurant and had to ask three times for a refill before my glass was topped up. This may sound picky but it really was just the one thing that we had to bring to the staffs attention and was rectified just fine with a very sweet waitress (thank you Shawna), it should illustrate that there really are no problems and no issues eating at the restaurants.

Walking around the resort at night is so easy, there are lots of lights (not floodlit - but enough to see well - my husband as a night vision problem and did ok). as there are steps to navigate this is necessary and really well done.

Rooms

Having been to Negril where there is little difference in the rooms I didn't bother to upgrade and only realised when we were there of the difference in the types. So we had an ocean deluxe suite, two large rooms plus bathroom. We had a bath and shower.. Although we had no balcony, we had a separate room with two sets of huge double windows, when you opened these it was like being on a balcony anyway! We practically never dined in the room (1st night and one breakfast) so it wasn't a big deal. If you spend a lot of time in your rooms and want to sit on a balcony go ahead and upgrade, if the room is for sleeping and unwinding after sun and before dinner C block may be perfectly fine for you. The rooms decor is fresh in blue and white (room safe works and door has deadlock but no chain), it is clean, huge and has all the amenities of the other rooms, just no balcony. As returnees and romance rewards members we pre checked in so we had our minibar stocked when we arrived, as we had a 17 hour trip and arrived at 8pm this was a god send). The real advantage of C block? only 35 stairs to the beach/ palazinna (you are right next to palazzina) and about the same to the balloon bar - C block is placed half way between everything. It is next to D and E but unlike E and F has no residual noise from the showtime at the baloon bar, has no noise from Palzinna and the only time we heard any noise was when we went to bed early from the Friday night gala (and this stops before 11.00 anyway). All entertainment stops at 11.00 at the latest and moves to the au naturel beach to party so that does not affect any blocks.

The only houskeeping issue we had was our air con unit dripped in to the closet and wetted some clothes. this happened twice, the first time it stopped within an hour and we reported it to the guest services. Second time was our last night. Our housekeeper happened to be in the room and reported it to the front desk, as well as leaving us with extra towels to mop up the puddle. I am sure it was fixed (we mentioned it to head of housekeeping after we had checked out that we hadn't seen anyone from maintenance and she was right on to it).

The management and staff are friendly fun and always ready to talk. we mentioned that we had not had any towel sculptures to the head of housekeeping and we had one every night thereafter until we left. We were only talking about how lovely they were, not complaining that we hadn't had one for a couple of nights!

The gym and fitness pavillion has breathtaking views and is a great place for morning aerobics, classes start from 8.00. I did Aerobics most mornings at 9.00 or water aeorobics at 11.00. This is in the mineral pool and very refreshing. If you want to run around the lake I recommend first thing in the morning. 3 times round for a mile, and dont forget to stop and say hello to Crackers the parrot, if you dont she will say hello to you anyway! The resort is totally safe for wandering alone or with your other half.

During the day, walk up from the beach or pool to the mineral pool. pass D block and the wedding gazebo and grotto (stop here for a secluded "dip" the fish swim all around your feet if you are on the endge and dipping them in the pool) , there is another smaller beach area before the mineral pool (with smoothie bar) and then the spa and salon. We upgraded our free massage to a 55 minute one which was lovely and I also had a pedicure (still looking good two weeks later!).

As returners to couples we were able to have a free massage, a trip to tower isle (which was not really for us as it did not have the lush grounds of Sans Souci and was more of a hotel than a resort, although the island in the bay looks lovely). Proudly wear our T Shirts, spend the resort credit and of course attended the returnees dinner (by the pool which is a change to how it used to be apprently). We liked it.

Water sports as always are plentiful, not many guests seemed to take boats out but the water cycles and pedaloes are well used, glass bottom boat trip was fun.

Overall a relaxing trip, Sans Souci does not have the beautful bloody bay or 7 mile beach of negril so if it's a beach holiday you want this may not be for you. There is a beach, walkable in about five - 10 minutes, you can swim out to the pontoon and back. By the spa where the sauna is you can walk down to enter another beach area (but the water comes up to the step almost) but you can swim out there as well.

The grounds are wonderful, really beautiful, take the nature walk with one of the groundsmen on Sunday or Wednesday ( we went with Kirk) which is informative and great fun. sit at the pool bar to have amazing cocktails accompanied by quizzes and games with the entrtainment crew. relax and enjoy, there are lots of hammocks for two all over the resort, jacuzzis, places to sit in or out of the sun and make sure if you haven't been during the day that you go to the au naturel beach at sunset (clothing on after 5pm), watch the sun go down it is really beautiful.

They get it just right and nothing is too much trouble. Thank you Couples for an amazing holiday and we will definitely be back!

Room Tip: if you are not bothered about a balcony and want to be very central choose Ocean Deluxe Suite C bloc...

I have been to all Couples properties and was excited to visit San Souci for the first time. Initially, my husband and I were very happy with our ocean front, corner room. After exploring the property a bit and returning to our room.......air conditioning didn't work. After 3 phone calls, someone finally showed up....oh, oh they said. We'll be right back. They came back and the 2 maintenance men moved our things across the hall. (which put our room on the main path from the pool and the restaurants to the rooms). This only took 4 hours.

The next day our remote for the tv didn't work. Later that night they decided to stain all of the window and door frames.....so they sent the 9 month pregnant maid to see if we are okay because the varnish smell is so bad you can smell it in the whole building. We are not moving again and open all the windows and let every passer-by see in our room. Really? A pregnant lady??

Back to varnish/paint....apparently it was paint/build week the week we were there. They closed half the pool area to repaint the pool deck. This is great to have maintenance keeping up the property.....however, the stain that continually floats over the entire pool got so bad, you couldn't even sit at the swim up bar. I said something to the dive shop manager and they came over and skimmed some of the toxins out of the pool. Gross.

Restaurants.....there are 3. The only one that was any good was the reservation one indoors. Make all the reservations you can here if you stay. The one on the beach is okay, but I've had better service at Denny's in the states. The other restaurant that you will eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner(with reservations).....have feral cats and kittens that will sit on your table and your feet. I saw one kitten scratch the heck out of one woman's leg. And good luck getting a napkin or utensils for breakfast and lunch....and we weren't even here for busy season!

Entertainment......ha.....a joke here. In no way remotely like any of the other Couples Resorts. The enertainment staff bordered on rude and one spent all her time with the celebrity tennis star playing scrabble all week. Hhhmmmm.....it rained, I need some entertaining! Lame dance party over on the naked side.....cheap booze & wine in a plastic cup? Ick. The show that was put on the beach could have been amazing, but the acts they brought in could have been done better by high schoolers.....was the joke of our table. The big lawn party had potential but rains pushed us to the beach bar/restaurant area.....again, fail for entertainment as they only danced with each other & staff members from the kitchen.

This is a beautiful property with great potential and maybe had its heyday.....but I think someone needs to step back and listen to the guests that are not happy at this resort. Take a lesson from the customer service of Couples Tower Isle! They are wonderful!

Room Tip: Try and make sure you aren't in building F......it's up hill and far away from everything. K...

My husband and I stayed at CSS 2/25-3/3 and can't stop talking about how great of a time we had. From the lounge in the airport while we waited for our shuttle, to the friendly shuttle driver (Carlos I believe?) the food, the entertainment, the grounds, the staff and the people were all excellent!

I had been reading reviews having booked the One Bedroom Ocean room, was convinced that the F or G block was the way to go, but having arrived 2 hours late due to plane delay, they were all booked up and it seemed we were getting pretty much the last room available, D1. Bummed, right? Well we settled in and were informed that a couple was checking out of G block the next day at noon and to go give it a look. We did, and despite the bigger balcony and better view, we turned it down! D Block was a great location, halfway between the beach and lobby, the path from the lobby actually runs right into the door. The view was still good, but also very private, there was a walkway in front of the building, but no one ever took it. But the main thing was the shower, it was beautiful, enormous and had a GREAT view!

Breakfast in the Palazina was always wonderful, never did an omelet, but did the waffles, they were big, but thin so you could have room for all the other tasty things inside. There was always fresh fruit, my husband enjoyed the smoked salmon and toast. There was also always a good blend of American breakfast items and traditional Jamaican dishes (this is true for all meals, I loved trying new things!) the ackee and codfish for breakfast was great!

Bella Vista was GREAT for lunch, both the burger and jerk burgers were amazing, but don't overlook their beef patties with the hot sauce! Also there were some pretty good fries there.

We also tried to keep in contact with the staff as lunch menus were never posted, but we had talked to a fellow vacationer when we arrived and had head that there was an asian cuisine day, so we found out that that was Fridays, so we made sure we were at Palazina for lunch that day. Palazina was for sure our favorite restaurant. Casanova was good too, but seemed similar to Palazina, although my husband did the shrimp cocktail appetizer and loved it.

The grounds was just something that can only be seen, but the best way I can describe it is perfectly diverse. There's Charlie's grotto that has a giant 3 story waterfall, the mineral pool, mineral grotto, a secluded hot tub, very nice fitness center, smoothie bar, the main beach, tons of watersports activities, a beautiful pond with ducks, fish and turtles (we were told that they like the english muffins), the swim up bar, au natural beach (which turns into a sunset beach for everyone, but as noted before, many people are very begrudging about that 5:30 robing rule, and don't always follow, so be prepared!)

Activities are always around, poolside Jamaican history, followed by a trivia game the next day "naughty" bingo, which really was just bingo, but named so us youngsters don't feel old playing it, but they'd put fun twists on it, like who can go the longest without getting a single chip. KatyAnne, Jermaine, ShellyAnne and Chadrick were awesome at making sure everyone was always having a great time. Also at the swim up bar we were always very well take care of, I made it a point to try to order as many different drinks as possible and they always delivered, Duane and Easton were great bartenders, just be sure not to let ShellyAnn give you her ShellyAnn special, it's a tad strong and I got caught "milking it" for 45 minutes so she took it away from me :) but she replaced it with a dirty banana, much better!

Grounds keeping was amazing, there was always staff picking up the beach, cleaning walkways and picking up leaves (and with as many trees as there are there, they were doing an excellent job!). Rooms were also apparently inspected regularly, our first night there we had one of the latches where you swing the bar over the knob to latch after you do the deadbolt and the second night a brand new chain had been put in. Another couple had said that when they checked in, their sliding glass door stuck a bit and then one day it had been greased up (not to her knowing she flung it open pretty hard! oops!)

Water sports was good, my husband and I were a bit bummed because we were able to go on the glass bottom boat the first day, but after that there was two red flags, then a yellow, so we couldn't do a discover scuba diving course until the last day we were there, and naturally, everyone else had been waiting as well so it was a packed group and the instructors seemed rushed and maybe even a bit overwhelmed. But if you can chose when you dive, see if you can do the shipwreck, as we just went to a reef that wasn't all that impressive, there was a few fish there, but they mostly dispersed after we ran out of bread to feed them.

Not sure if I hit all the points, but lastly that I can think of, all of the staff was just amazing, the restaurants were always buzzing, so it may take a few minutes for you to get your coffee in the morning or your drinks in the evening, but they were always very polite and happy to be there (sure, there was a few not as perfect people, but hey, it happens)

Room Tip: F and G block have the best views, but be prepared to climb to them, other rooms are just as good!

Feb 29 - March 7/12
We’ve just returned from what we thought would be a typical fun vacation with two other couples, (wonderful friends) that we have shared happy memories with in places like Cancun, the Mayan Riviera, Cuba, St. Lucia and Montego Bay, Jamaica. Who thought that this holiday at Couples San Souci would be the “one to top”?
I will refrain from repeating what many past clients of CSS have stated only to explain that this truly is a little piece of heaven right here on earth. All three of us were designated a one bedroom oceanview room in Dahlia Block. My boyfriend and I stayed in room D17 which offered a breathtaking view of both the ocean and the beach bar grill area and Pallazina Restaurant. It’s funny, but as I sit here in my living room in Niagara Falls, Canada, I swear that I can still hear the ocean waves that I sadly left behind this morning.
Upon arrival and after checking in, we immediately made our dinner reservations for the week. We had our first dinner at the Bella Vista Beach Restaurant. Thursday night consisted of a formal dinner at the Casanova Restaurant followed by the Star Gala Dinner on Friday night. I seriously thought that I was in a dream eating under the stars surrounded by little white twinkle lights over a tasty array of food choices topped with the most outstanding dessert choices I’ve ever seen. Saturday, Sunday and Monday consisted of dinner at the Ristorante Pallazina where the menu changed nightly. Tuesday night was a fun night at the “beach party” where we were entertained by a steel drum band while again, dinner was served under the stars. Each and every night, no matter where we had dinner, the food was always delicious and presented elegantly.
Although there is room service available all day long, we chose to start our day with a nice breakfast at the Pallazina. Lunch was either the Beach Bar Grill or the Pallazina for a change.
I would highly recommend a hot stone massage while you are staying at CSS. OMG! I slid off the table and literally felt drunk with relaxation afterward. Make sure that if you do book a massage, ask for Joan. She is truly wonderful. Imagine this: you are having your massage in a small intimate hut on a mountainside overlooking the ocean waves splashing on the rocks below. Now you get the picture!
If you have trouble getting around, this resort is not the place for you. Thankfully for us, there were many stairs to climb and descend in order to get from point A to point B. Every morning, we did a 45 minute walk around the pond area so that we didn’t feel so guilty indulging the fantastic meals we enjoyed.
We spend most of our time at the main pool but we did find the mineral pool a nice place to escape to a few times. I enjoyed the water aerobics in the morning while the others took advantage of the Glass Bottom Boat excursion and the catamaran rides which were part of the all-inclusive package at CSS.
We have been very fortunate to have stayed in many beautiful places in the Caribbean prior to visiting Couples San Souci. Although we have been to Montego Bay, Jamaica, numerous times always staying in the Sandals Resorts, this is our first time in Ocho Rios and our first experience with the Couples chain.
In closing, let me say that our experience at Couples San Souci in Ocho Rios simply reinforces to us that the hard working people in Jamaica and their beautiful country is what keeps us coming back.
Thank you to all the wonderful staff and the breathtaking beauty of Couples San Souci for making our vacation a most memorable one. Something tells me that we will be joining the ranks of many “return guests” at CSS!

We were a group of 6 (ages ranged from 38-61) who vacationed at Couples Sans Souci the week of Feb 26-March 4, 2012. My husband and I vacation south yearly and this was our third time to Jamaica and our first time at Couples Sans Sousi. We have previously stayed at the Iberostar Rose Hall and the Grand Palladium Lady Hamilton.

We loved Couples! Everything is included (and then some). The staff were amazing, the vacationers were all friendly, the food was amazing and the weather was hot hot hot.

We liked the "Plantation" feel of the resort. It was much smaller then previous resort experience but actually found out we prefered it. We were in A block but all their 120 face the ocean.

Never did we need to rush or beach chairs, nor did we need to wait for drinks at the bar or wait more then 1 minute to be seated at the restaurant.

This resort is a MUST!

Room Tip: A block is a great location but is a little noisier with being by the swim-up bar.

We are on our last day at the end of a 2 week vacation. After vacationing in Mexico the last 5 years we decided to visit Jamaica and chose the Couples Sans Souci. For the first time ever - we will miss everything about this vacation.
The positives:
>The people are incredible. From the entertainment people, Jermaine and KatyAnne, who made us feel like family, to Trevor who played piano in the Cassanova restaurant then led the sing-a-long in the Balloon bar, and the wonderful people in the restaurants, especially Paulette, who has the most wonderful smile and attitude, they all made us feel welcome. When we leave tomorrow morning, we will feel as if we are leaving family behind.
>The food is to die for - from lobster night, to meals you would only find in 5 star restaurants and desserts that are unlike anything we have ever experienced (Tina, the lady who helps to creat the most delicious desserts EVER- is a genius).
>The lack of children in an adults/couples only resort is wonderful and leads to a wonderfully romantic atmosphere.
>Not having to reach into your pocket every few minutes is a wonderful feeling as well. We received a $300 resort credit which we used to purchase Blue Mountain Coffee, liqueurs, shirts, dresses...... That was awesome.
>The private beach, while not large, was free of people trying to sell everything under the sun.
>There are so many secluded areas all over the place that you start to feel asa if you are the only ones in the resort - a wonderful difference from the resorts where you are tripping over people.
>And lets not forget the entertainment - every night they have the most incredible shows with a different first rate singer every day. that was an unexpected bonus.
>Finally, Jamaica itself is a joy to behold. This may be our first trip - but not our last.
Now the negatives (a very sort list)
>When it rained "liquid sunshine", the tiles on the patios, as well as in the rooms (and bathrooms when they get wet), turn into "skating rinks" - very, very slippery.
>The beach, while quiet, is on the small side for those who like to walk long stretches. Plus, there is a mossy type of seaweed in the water in some areas. That said, the beach/water is never crowded.
>The Sunset (nude) beach is beautiful and supposed to be a regular beach after 5pm so people can take sunset photos, but some of the users like to strut around in the nude well after that - needs to be better inforced but not a major problem unless you are easily shocked.
>Finally, a negative and positive all at the same time - THE STAIRS. Lots and lots of stairs but don't let that stop you - after about 3 days your legs are stronger than they have been in years and feel great.
Will we be back - Hell, we never want to leave but yes - we will be back next year and so looking forward to it. Of all the Couples resorts, we now know why this one is ranked #1.

Room Tip: Loved Evergreen 7 - large balcony that stepped down to an even larger patio, plus steps from the Cas...

My wife and I just returned form a one week stay. We can not say anything that has not already been said about this excellent resort. The staff, the grounds, the service, the food, all excellent.

Our only word of advice...if booking an outside table at the Cassanova Restaurant be sure to make a reservation no later then 7:30 p.m. The outside seating is on a terrace above the nightly entertainmant area. Nightly entertainment begins at 9:00 p.m.

We reserved an outside table for 8:30 p.m. on our last evening on the resort. The setting was beautiful. All of the guests were dressed, as requested, in their "Resort Chic" attire. When the nightly entertainment began the terrace was opened up to all resort guests to better view the entertainment. What began as a quiet, elegent meal quickly turned into a bar room bash. The biggest disappoint? When I suggested to the head of restaurant management that the terrace should be closed until all diners had finsished their meals he suggested it was my problem not his.
