“Pretty home with good view but very loud with poor service and unsafe environment”

My family and I had been planning a trip to Llantrissant for months and unfortunately the overall visit was not worth the wait. Firstly I will point out there was one stellar member of the staff, Ms. Georgia, who was very friendly and did her best with the limited resources afforded to her to take care of us. Generally speaking the owner of the villa was not open and honest with us in our communications leading up to our visit. For example at the time of booking the home's web site clearly stated there was a clay tennis court on site. This was our major reason for choosing this home, as the daily activity would have been a highlight for our family. Prior to the trip I was visiting the web site to look at some photos (in anticipation of our trip) and after clicking on the activities tab I noticed that the tennis court was listed as non operational due to a storm. On the main page the court was still showing as an amenity of the property, however after digging the truth was discovered. We had not been informed of this by the owner. Upon contacting the owner of the home to see what our options were, we were dismissed. He told us that he could not control the weather which is what caused the damage. When we suggested that we could find another home that met our needs he even told us he was keeping 20 percent of the total (the deposit amount) even though what we had reserved and paid for was clearly not what we were getting. When we asked him why he had not contacted us to let us know the court would not be available he again dismissed us stating that he "didn't think to do so". We obviously did not want to lose our deposit so we were forced to stick with our decision to visit Llantrissant.

Prior to our arrival very little communication was offered to help us prepare for our trip. Although we had been to Jamaica before and rented private homes, normally there was guidance on preparing for the transportation, first meal, etc... After several requests we were able to confirm our transportation and dinner request with the owner who apparently relayed the information to the staff. The driver who is apparently a family friend of the owner arrived to pick us up at the airport with another gentleman. We were transported in a very old van that smelled of stale cigarettes and did not offer the comfort you would hope for in a 2 hour journey to your vacation. On the way we had to stop on the side of the road to drop off a bag to a previous customer or friend of the driver. On the positive side, the driver did have a cooler full of red strip light beers that we requested. After being dropped off at the home we began to get our bags to bring them to our sleeping rooms when we realized my son's back pack was missing. He had the backpack on the van and so we requested the staff contact the driver so he could bring it back. We would never see the backpack or the DVD player, dvd's, school books, or journal that was contained in the bag again. It was stolen in the transition from the driver to the home even though we were supposed to be in trusted hands. We requested to speak with the House Manager, who we told would be of assistance during the trip, however we were told he would not be in until he was done with his first job the next day. We were completely helpless after the obvious theft of hundreds of dollars worth of items from a child. When we finally did meet the house manager he suggested it was lost at the airport, even though we have a photo of my son clearly holding his backpack and it's contents on the van on the way to the home. Because it was the first night we tried to put this out of our head so we could enjoy the rest of the trip.

The only people there to greet us were the housekeepers, who did prepare a lovely dinner of Caribbean lobster per our request. We were not offered a tour of the property, or shown how to operate the lights, where the phone was, etc... Despite the hand book which the owner provided (more to offer his "house rules" than to prepare the guests) there was no mention that despite a fully staffed home there were no basic items at the home to eat or drink. No juice, soda, nothing but water. Of course we anticipated utilizing the local store for these items but did not know it would be closed by 5pm on the day we arrived. This is something the owner or staff could have prepared us for. We enjoyed a delicious dinner and relaxed the rest of the evening. We did our own shopping for the most part after that. Based on this the average meal prices on the web site are very inaccurate even if you do not eat lobster every night. It is more cost effective to visit delicious establishments like the Rockhouse, Push Cart, or 3 Dives Jerk Centre, than to have the staff prepare your meals with food purchased at the local Hi-Lo.

When going to bed the first night we began to experience the overwhelming noise from the local reggae clubs. Don't let the serene photos fool you - the music is so loud it feels as though there is a DJ or live band in the house itself. We are in our early 30's and enjoy music - live music, loud music, entertainment, etc... however this was unbearable. The vibrations could be felt while laying in bed and often times it overwhelmed conversations and even the television. This noise continued every night of our stay except one. We were there for 9 nights!

After using the showers in a couple of rooms we noticed some problems with the plumbing. The house manager had to call a plumber to come over and ultimately we could not use the showers for a whole day and had limited privacy due to him having to work in the area. Of course these things happen but it was clear that the bathrooms were not checked prior to our arrival. We moved on from this just as the other previous issues and we were only on our second day.

The majority of the staff other than the one initially mentioned was completely distant, and frequently rude. We were not offered beverages, or asked for our preferences, or attended to. Instead we were handed a grocery bill that included basic cleaning items, the potatoes, and salad for our previous night's dinner totaling $140. Even at the finest grocery store here in San Antonio I can get potatoes, salad, and cleaning items for FAR less that that, and unfortunately since a receipt is often hard to decipher we were unsure of exactly what we were paying for. We paid separately for the lobster to the fish monger so even that was not included on the bill. When we asked why we were paying for cleaning supplies and paper towels the staff told us that the owner requires guest to pay for these items, making the staff look like "bad guys". The staff also indicated that often guests coming in are not informed of the policies enforced by the owner that directly effect the guests, such as this. Similarly, the owner told us the staff was available to launder our clothing and that we should tip them accordingly. The staff informed us that they were not to do so and that the owner instructed them to wash only sheets and towels. After being very generous with the housekeepers we did have laundry done a couple of times. These are simply communication items which could have been avoided if the satisfaction of the visitors with their experience was of concern to the owner of the home.

The staff was very open about the fact that the area was unsafe and despite the gated yard and the night time security that any item left unattended was subject to theft. Even in the "safety" of our guest rooms it was clear our items were not secure. My 8 year old's clothing began to disappear gradually. Having arrived with plenty of t-shirts to change several times a day, we ended up leaving with 2 other than the one on his back. Perhaps they will be found with the person enjoying his back pack and dvd player.

On another day of our visit, we noticed some people walking around outside on the property. The web site and owner of the home stated it was completely private, and even suitable for nude sun-bathing. Fortunately we were clothed however 4 strangers were walking around outside without our permission. Apparently they came to see the turtles on the property, however we paid for the privacy and security of the home for 9 nights. Once again this was negated.

One of the final nails in the Llantrissant coffin for us was a comment made by the owner that we were not "environmentally friendly" because we chose to have our towels washed daily. While we did use the towels more than once, we showered frequently due to swimming and outdoor activity. Ironically the sprinkler on the tennis court (which we could not use) was running constantly in an attempt to reclaim the grass which, for the record, does not look like it is going well. It seems if saving water were a true concern the sprinkler would cause more of an alarm than washing towels daily.

At the end of the day the most disappointing thing is that we attempted to address all of our issues with the owner of the home who took no responsibility for anything and dismissed us again. Mostly upset about the loss of my son's valuable property, and with proof that it was stolen either by his recommended driver or one of the staff members, I asked him to help us resolve the issue in some way. His response was to ask us not to correspond with him as he does not agree with any of our feedback. While I highly recommend renting a home in Jamaica and experiencing what is generally good hospitality, I definitely do not recommend you do it at Llantrissant unless you have very very low expectations. It is a good beach house if you do not mind the noise and safety issues, and do not expect any service. And don't let the other reviews on their web site fool you as most of the staff mentioned has turned over several times and the staff on property has been there for a very short time. If you do visit Llantrissant, good luck - bring your lock-box and noise-reducing headphones.
