“Great holiday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

The Legends beach resort is a cheap and an old pretty rundown place. But for some reason this just adds to it's charm.
Don't expect too much and you will be pleasantly surprised.
The place is in desperate need of an upgrade and the food is average, but the people are
great and they make the strongest drinks on the planet.
You will enjoy yourself. Michael will make sure you have a spot on the beach and Big Mama will cook you a nice meal.
It is crowded on the beach but it makes for so much entertainment. Bands come and play and hawkers sell lots of good gear, especially the lady with the 'FRUUUIIIT'
Make sure you don't get a sea facing room as the place next door has loud music all night.

This is summary of our stay at Legend's Hotel. There is obviously some drastic differentiation between the experience we had and those of others.

My wife and I booked a 6 night stay at Legend's after seeing that it was on the beach, and had a good amount of positive reviews. We initially considered staying at Samsara but opted for Legend's. We did not book all-inclusive.

We booked roundtrip airport travel and that was perfect. FYI, we had a 12:45pm departure flight, arrived at the airport at 10:30 am and we needed just about every minute of that time to get through to our gate for our flight home. The staff is extremely slow so keep that in mind.

Upon check in all seemed fine, the grounds aren't the greatest and are in the typical "frozen in the 80's" style of resort decor. We upgraded to the Ocean View room before arrival (there are I believe 5 of those rooms) and proceeded to get unpacked. Note, you have a great view from these rooms, but they are directly over the bar, that means anything happening on the beach at night (live bands, events) is going to be heard.

Our shower had almost no pressure and about 1 minute of hot water. I do believe this is because the hot water is solar powered and the water is actually trucked in and stored in tanks, so perhaps we got in on the tail end of the refill as this was remedied by Day 2. Also of note, out toilet was not bolted to the ground. I don't know the exact amount we paid but this is the most expensive room at Legend's. You get 2 towels as well. That is it. Each room has an air conditioner mounted above the door and a ceiling fan. The cleaning staff turned our air conditioner off each day, and the fan was not securely bolted to the ceiling. There was also a sign on the triple lock doors to the balcony that read "LOCK ALL DOORS AT NIGHT". There is also no event, trip or local information in the rooms. My wife and I thought we would just wing it when we got there and that was a big mistake. There is not a hair dryer, or ironing board either if that matters. Not a big deal, we stayed positive.

The staff at Legend's was utterly incompetent. The hotel front desk staff; I interacted with probably 4 of them throughout my stay and not once did they have a smile, ask how my trip was going, how my stay was going or did they express anything associated with a hospitable attitude. My wife and I were made to feel as if we were in their debt for our staying there. You will get the bare minimum or response to anything you ask and you won't be engaged. I never one heard them ask a question to a guest, as I believe they really didn't want to hear the answer. One request being to upgrade our room to Samsara and pay more money, more on that further down.

The restaurant staff; where the front desk managers were uncommunicative, the wait staff was oblivious. Drinks show up about 15 minutes after ordering, the food is not that good, you will get up from your seat to go get water and they will jump in to grab it for you. This after waiting 10 minutes. The demeanor of most of the staff comes off as not really knowing what they are doing and not really having a manager or anyone to help run the show and expedite things. Most of the staff has a glazed look on the face and seems to have been thrown into their position without any training. Example: my wife ordered a chicken salad and got a burger, and we were the only people eating at that time. A typical meal here will take you over an hour, I am not exaggerating that at all. And again, it is not that good.

The beach. It is truly gorgeous. It is also like trying to relax at a flea market in terms of the audible sounds. You will be constantly (this is not an exaggeration) bombarded with to buy every Jamaican cliche there is. Pot Brownies (yes, a man had a plate of brownies covered in aluminum foil that he announced to everyone up and down the beach), Joints, Juice, Jet Skis, Prostitutes (who also hang out at the front desk at night), Horse Rides, Hair Braiding, Shells and Shirts. Our beach had a lovely character that would just stand and shout from 10am to 4pm. Yes, there is a man named Michael there that works for Legend's. No he does not protect you. He hangs out by the chairs but he isn't diverting anything. He is however extremely nice, I just don't think he has the ability to keep everyone off the guests so this is no fault of his. And to be honest, some of the guest engaged the sellers, bought things from them and didn't seem to mind. The beach is also occupied by a decent number of dogs, they lay under the chairs and don't bother anyone, the cats however work the floor of the restaurant and are always around you when eating. If you don't like cats, you may not like this place.

On our first day I think there were about 3 people sitting around the chairs promoting the drugs they were selling, out loud, non-stop throughout the day. And 1 of them happened to be the Lifeguard. Which is weird because I am not sure what hotel he even belonged to. You can go through the rounds each morning and just say "not today" to everyone, but you will have to do it every day. If you don't like friendly confrontation (as it is friendly-it is just assertive) this is not the beach area for you. You can translate this as being lively, authentic, rude or aggravating. It doesn't feel dangerous or threatening, it is what it is.

Day 2, we decide we should probably move to the Samsara hotel. It isn't on the beach but it will be quiet and you can relax without the audible distractions. I go to the desk and cordially ask about transferring our room to Samsara. The Desk Manager, working on muscle memory, pulls out a form that leads one to believe this happens all the time. She did not ask why I wanted to transfer, when or what if any monetary implications there were to do this. Her only communication was "check back in a day and you'll know if you have been approved". It was now my job to see if I could pay more to move to their other hotel…which I believe is actually cheaper than Legend's. When asked on day 2 about our room, we were told to ask again the following day. We inquired as to why everything revolves on a 24-hour cycle and how they don't know already if there are rooms available. According to the Desk Person there is a Reservation Manager who does the booking but they never seem to be around. I also looked online and there were rooms to purchase at Samsara for the days we wanted. The runaround tactic is a common theme in these hotels. Don't expect to be taken care of, that is not on the staff's agenda. No one can answer questions, they can

My wife and I gave up on transferring, enjoyed our trip, and for the most part spent every day at the Samsara hotel and then came back to Legend's at night. Also of note, we met exactly 4 other couples while we were there (of differing nationalities) that were having the same issues. All of them were trying to transfer to Samsara after being disappointed with the staff and beach atmosphere and all of them were denied. This was not an isolated incident and I honestly never approached anyone with a bad attitude.

Otherwise, the other workers we interacted with at restaurants and local shops were wonderful. I can't really recommend other places to stay but if you don't like the beach culture explained above, I would stay at Sandals (which has staff to keep the beach clear as we found out from a couple at the airport) or stay at one of the hotels on the west side /cliffs area. Those are all private in that you can't walk along the water to each one, you have to enter them from the road and that is managed by hotel staff.

Room Tip: Choose a room at another hotel.

Two weeks of fabulous rest and relaxation. Clean and basic rooms....every day. Beach security, Michael, was wonderful. Rooms, dining, and beach close at hand. Friendly staff made the experience comfortable. Oona at front desk was helpful and a customer service professional as was Paul. Bar/ restaurant staff seemed happy to be at work and went out of the way to meet customer needs....especially Shanna,Mama, iesha, Jennifer and Raquel. we will be back!! Very laid back experience.....bare foot and bathing suit is the way to go.

Room Tip: Garden side (across the road) would be quieter. Beach side do not have a view of the ocean unless y...

I bought a groupon for the resort for three nights, then booked the rooms, plus two extra night with the resort, only to find that the only flights on those dates were eighter over $1,000 a person or fights that were 15 hours plus and at leaset one stop. so i called the resort and Merlene the reservation manager, let me change my booking to a date four month later even though it was after the groupon's experation date with no extra charges, they did not have to do that according to the contract but she did with out a fuss. great customer service

My husband and I spent a week at Legends, Feb. 24- Mar. 2. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The service is EXCELLENT. The staff at the bar/restarurant was awesome!!! Big thanks to Shana, Marvia, Andrea, Tiffany, Raquel, Iesha, Jennifer, MaMa, and Paul. They all made us feel at home and comfortable. Michael does a great job on the beach. He does a great job keeping all the guests safe. This is our third trip to Legends and we do plan on having a fourth.

Room Tip: The Beach Side Rooms are closer to the beach and the BAR (my husband added), but you can hear alot o...

Had a great time once again.Jamaica, and Legends in particular never seems to disappoint. It was our 3rd visit and once again Michael, Mamma the cook, and all the rest of the kind staff
made our stay special. The beach, local foods, Mamma"s food, and local events (donkey races) also made it a great week. As noted by others bring your own towel(s),no fridge in rooms. Rooms are CLEAN.Thanks Norma! We like the "garden side" (across the rd.)rooms because it's quieter. Legends has someone there to help you cross the road - when you get there you will see why it's nice to have that help. By all means go and enjoy Legends; we love it.
Tom

Room Tip: Garden side is quieter, especially at night.

The rooms on the "beach side" were the most convient. The rooms were typical of an older, beach side, small resort. Very clean and very basic. The bed was fine and housekeeping was dependable. We did do the all-inclusive and were treated to some great local dishes. Thanks Mama. The wait staff and bar staff were very attentive and friendly to talk with. Thanks Sondra, Tiffany, Dennal, Jennifer and all the staff. Beach security manager,Michael spent the day assisting guests and making time on the beach feel like the vacation we expected. Mr. miller at the front gate allways had a kind "hello" as we came and went. The location is close to some great reggae venues and we could walk 500 yards to Burbon Beach Night club where we saw a great show by King Yellowman. This was our first trip to Legends Resort, but like so many of the guest we met, we expect to return.
