My wife and I just returned from royal decameron runaway bay Jamaica
The past two years we have been spending our vacations at Mexican all inclusive resorts and decided to give Jamaica a try.
What caught our eye were the private cottages as this was a little different from the large resort style rooms. The comments and concerns about the French contract was a little un settling but we found out that this arrangement ended in April and our trip was in mid may so it was not an issue. I would like not to be redundant in my comments so if you have been reading others I will try and skip the obvious topics Beautiful grounds, friendly staff and such. First the positives, the cottages are a treat! So much better than a regular hotel room. Having included amenities on site such as the glass bottom boat, daily manicured beaches, good nightly entertainment and all the water toys is a big plus. Lifeguards on duty were a nice touch as well. The Jamaican food night is the best! The jerk chicken and curried goat are fantastic !
Also go climb Dunn’s river falls it is a blast, it’s not for everyone but I would say it is a must do! Just run from the venders at the end of the tour or they will hound you until your wallet is empty. FYI Prices for souvenirs are cheapest right outside the front gate In front of the resort.
Now a few observations were things could have been a little better. Upon check in the bell men do not give you much information about things like restaurant locations, workout room location, amenities, etc. you are basically left to find out everything on your own. The cottages could use a mini frig especially for guests staying longer periods of time. The service in the buffet area is lacking, all they do is remove your dirty dishes, no water or drinks are served unless you flag someone down, even if you tip it did not make a difference. Bars were not stocked with everything they needed for drinks that were advertised (we tried to sample them all L O L). The drinks that were served were very good! Beer at the jetty bar is colder so if you are American go there.
Finally, if you go and trust me for the price you should try this resort, temper your expectations, relax and you will have a great time! We will be going back from now on.

Room Tip: we were in cottage 103 and it was nice.

We stayed at the Royal Decameron with a group of family for a wedding (which was wonderful). Transfer from the airport is not too long, nice drive along the coast road. First of all, what’s not so good: When I first arrived, I was shocked at how pants the rooms where. They are just wooden sheds, ours had a couple of sockets which did not work and a leaky shower fitting. I reported this to reception, my complaint was just ignored. The food is basic and the quality patchy, but we usually found+ something just about edible. Also the swimming pool is pretty small. But so what! You don’t go on holiday to Jamaica to scrutinise the plumbing or measure the pool (or at least you shouldn’t, unless you are a miserable muppet).
The hotel sits directly on its own private beach, with the achingly beautiful Caribbean coming within a few feet of the beach front accommodation huts. All of the staff are super friendly and do everything they can to make sure you are having fun. This is genuine friendliness, they are not just after tips, and you don’t have to tip at all. They are just the friendliest, most full of fun people you will ever meet. Drinks are served very freely indeed, the draught beer is high quality Red Stripe, the cocktails have generous amounts of vodka, rum etc. The evening entertainment is above average for an all inclusive resort. The night club is great for music, dancing (and drinking) into the early morning hours. Our favourite place was the jetty bar, total absolute fun and relaxation, complete bliss. Overall the positives at Royal Decameron Club Caribbean far, far outweigh the negatives. The place has an atmosphere of fun, happiness and relaxation that is very special indeed.

We had a really nice time we were worried that we would not get our beach front cottage but we did no problems we missed the French by 3 days.
There has deffinlty been major problems there between holiday makers and local staff and the French but it's all calming down now the place has its mojo back I do understand that they will be back next november 2012 untill April 2013 so I would give this hotel a miss during the French occupation talking to the staff it really was as bad as the reviews on trip advisor. But as I said we had a good time here food was ok jasmine restarant was lovly food very good snak bar great drinks they even have jack Daniels. To sum up you get what you pay for so for the money very good value and your own cottage. Can't be bad, by the way you don't have to tip for everything there's no need the staff still look after you but the locals expect it when out of the hotel on trips very very aggressive in there manner there own worst enemy because of the way they behaved we won,t be going back which is a same.

We arrived on the 9th May 2012, we were greeted with a fruit punch which was great and so refreshing after the 10 hour flight and transfer. Our room was one of the cottages not that far from the beach, the gardens were beautiful, We went for our wedding anniversary which we advised when booking, as we entered our room there was a bottle of champagne and plate of fresh friut waiting for us. The beaches were always clean and food was good, the drinks are all included and well needed in the heat! just remember to drink plenty of water. The staff were great and always very helpful, had no complaints about anything, we had a wonderful week and are looking to book again.

It was brilliant... went to the royal club decameron end of april in may with my partner and loved it... as with many people we were very concerned about what we had read about the overbookings and the french taking over the place... we need not have troubled ourselves... apparently they left the day before we arrived. We were greeted with smiles and a lovely fruit punch and we were checked in within minutes and shown to our cottage... these wer basic but spotless with everything you need and ours was located in just the right place only 3 rows back from the beach( we could see it out of our window) but far enough away from the road and the entertainment that we slept like logs. The staff catered to our every need and were polite and friendly always...we couldn't rate them higly enough especially the bar staff who were brilliant. The beaches were always raked of seaweed and any litter and the gardens are gorgous. Food was good especially the breakfast which had a tonne of choices. The place isn't out and out luxury...but i can't imagine i'd have had any better holiday paying double to go to a sandals or other 5star resort so don't worry about it only being 3stars.I couldn't have wished for a better first trip to jamaica..great hotels...great people...great trips out...great weather...just great!!!

Me and my partner (both 20) have just got back from our week holiday, 8/5/12 - 15/5/12. A week was plenty long enough for us. Let me start off by saying this is a 3star hotel, very basic, but comftable and very beautiful scenery. There are some pros and cons, but even with the cons, im glad we chose this hotel. Value for money is very good. Definatly reccommend paying the little extra for a garden view cottage, although we didn't get a bath or balcony/terrest like it said on our e-tickets. Sea view isn't really worth paying for, people sun bathe right outside your window! There is plenty to eat on first impressions, abit overcooked, but unfortunity if your a fussy vegetarian (like me) then food is a little boring for example, rice and potatoes for lunch and dinner, unless your happy with a salad every night. Im not complaining about the food as there is alot of variety, but its all the same every night. The desserts are alot better though and there is plently of different bread to choose from. The entertainment was good, though some acts took a little time to prepare, and we had often finished eating before they were ready. It's a very safe hotel, 24hour security walking around. The staff where very quick to help and as soon as you sit down for a meal they come over and offer drinks. Some were quiet but most would stop and have a chat, ask how your holiday is going. Some reviews are saying they are rude, we found none that were rude, but we were always smiling and we have manners which they appreciate. Alot of other holidayers were lacking simple manners, so don't expect staff to be polite if your not. The sea is beautiful with plently of snorkling opportunities and lifeguards at all times. The beach and gardens are well looked after, the beach is raked very night and there are always plenty of sun loungers, with or without shade. We didn't adventure outside by ourselves as there is only a couple run down supermarkers and jerk chicken tinned roof bars. We were worried about getting hassled to buy items from the locals, and we find it awkward to say no, but there is a little local shop on the grounds which is run by the hotel, which sells clothes, toiletrys aswell as bits and bobs. We would definatly reccomend doing the dunns river falls tour, with the boat trip ($100 US each). It was amazing, climbing the falls was abit challenging in parts but there is a easier path and a dry path. So theres a path for everyone. On the boat we had some professional photos taken which was really impressive! At $10 US dollars each we only purchased 3, but gave a $5 tip and she put 7 on a cd for us. We also did snorkleing along the reef which was incredable! And everyone gets life jackets to keep you a-float so its no problem if your a weak swimmer. On the way back they do play really load music but me and my partner sat at the side of the boat away from the speakers, with our feet dangling over the side, getting splashed from the sea which was nice. Got burnt alot on this though. Overall I wouldn't go back, as I don't like to go back to the same place twice. But I would love to do Dunns river falls again and again. I would reccomend this to some friends, but it's not for everyone. One niggle I had was on the website, it clearly stated it was all inclusive, no tips needed as it was included in the price, yet as soon as we got there, we did have staff asking for tips. Not just hinting, but asking. I wouldn't of minded, as I know it's a poor island and wages are ridicuously low for the amount of hours they sometimes work, but the website was incorrect to state this. As we had never been to the Carribbean before we had no idea about the amount of tipping. So I would of preferred it if it hadnt of been on the website we booked through. That way we wouldn't had looked like idiots standing there starring at eachother, with them politely eventually asking for "appreciation"! Overall beautiful grounds, with abit of updating on certain things, food, rooms, it could easily be a 4star. Definalty a relaxing holiday! Just be prepared to tip for most things. :)
