“Exactly what we were looking for...”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

This was exactly the vacation we were looking for and needed. You could do as much as you wanted or as little. There was no pressure from the Activities team to participate, but they still had enough activities to keep us occupied. The water activities (kayak, hobbie craft, tubing, water skiing) were available most of the time. The archery lessons were fantastic. The spa was a wonderful break mid week. We enjoyed a couple’s massage – the technique is not the same as I am use to, but it was very relaxing.
We are in the 40-50 yr age range and yes, the resort does have a lot of older couples, but we met with a lot of younger couples as well. There seemed to be a wedding everyday which was lovely.
This is a boutique resort with only 100 rooms - they were at about 70% capacity while we stayed so nothing was busy or queued up. We stayed in a Seaside Suite and would recommend those, our friends had a verandah suite and they enjoyed sitting out on their verandah first thing in the morning. The Seaside Suite is about 10 steps away from the main pool with the swim up bar where Glen took fantastic care of us! Each day they came around about 2 pm with cold cloths to cool us down - very nice! There are no tv's in the rooms, but we caught up on the news while we worked out in the gym. The equipment is good and they keep this area quite clean. There is a lounge area upstairs with a large screen tv if you really needed to catch up on the latest news or tv show.
We took the Wednesday snorkeling trip put on by the resort and enjoyed both locations. The resort gets you to the marine park early to get your snorkeling in before the boats start to arrive with passengers from the cruise ships. The water sports guys take really good care of you.
We walked into Castries from the resort (approx 25 min) and enjoyed looking around. We rented a taxi driver to take us around the island - much more economical than booking through the excursions for four people. We did the Pitons, drive in volcano, 2 waterfalls, stopped at a local eatery and enjoyed their Creole lunch, and a final stop in at Marigot Bay.
The sea can be a little rough in the area provided for swimmers, but we made the best of it and my husband and friends tried body surfing which made for some good laughs. Yes, there are several planes which take off from the airport daily , but seriously, it's only disruptive for about 15 seconds and then it's gone - not that big of a deal. The airport is about 75 min from the hotel; the driver on the way to the hotel was so knowledgeable that we were there before we knew it!
I can see why we met people on this trip who come back here for repeat visits. Every day when asked how I was - I was certainly fantastic, how could you not??? The people, the atmosphere, good food and drink - I can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Seaside suites are the closest to the main pool. Verandah suites are lovely to sit out with your...

Ok. If Butlins joins Saga then this hotel will be heaven. Our booking for this resort was made through British Airways. Following our readng of the many reviews and as it was supported by BA we were confidently expecting something special!

The exact opposite turned out to be true.

Location: next to the 'local' airport - much noise which was not indicated on any review nor on their website. The so called marvellous beach was hardly that - no attempt was made to tidy it up, the sunbeds tired and all over the place, in all not what the advertising described. We were harassed by Bultins blue coats to join in various activities on the beach which we did not want to do but 'no thanks' was not taken as an optional answer. Egg and spoon races belong in tired holiday camps in England not in a supposed 5* in St Lucia.

Arrival: no usual reception area and not an especially warm welcome - the drinks offered were disgusting. We were told that the room we had booked and had confirmed via BA was actually not available until the following day! As compensation we were shown to a supposed upgraded room - we are uncertain how they classify the term 'upgrade'. The 'suite' was tired, the balcony virtually non-existant and its close proximity to the world at large was uncomfortable.

Food and drink: All meals were self serve (except drinks at mealtimes) and were obtained by queueing up in a down market cafe style buffet room where spilt food on surfaces had not been cleaned up and had spilled out over the floor - very pleasant. Quality and variety was poor and very limited. Drinks outside of mealtimes were quite appalling - cocktails tasted of chemicals and do not think of drinking the house wines, I thought my home made attempts at wine making were bad enough! The one good effort was the Valentines Day evening meal, very pleasant and well thought out.

General facilities: Pools - of limited size and design. Not enough sunbeds etc surrounding same. Staff - on the whole friendly but not always that helpful. Gardens - quite pleasant as was the view from our room (2nd night) - the Verandah Suite was actually an improvement over the upgraded suite!

We feel that if you are used to genuine 5* hotels then you will be very disillusioned and disapppointed with this hotel which we would give 3 stars at a push. Those clients who have raved will obviously never have been to a top class hotel before and we would say that if you are used to going to places such as Benidorm or the like then you will probably rate this hotel very highly. It depends what you are comparing it with, but 5* it is definitely NOT.

All in all we felt so dissatisfied we arranged through BA to move to another hotel. Extremely disapointing all round - potential clients beware!! As a final insult, we were amazed to receive one month after our return to the UK a welcome home card from the resort!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Go for the Verandah suites. Best of a poor set of options.

Rendezvous is a real gem but few Americans seem to know of it (mostly British and Canadians, under 35 or 50+). Food, drink and service were excellent with lots of variety. The location, beaches, rooms and weather were really nice, and there were plenty of activities including hobie cats, kayaks, water skiing, tennis, yoga, walking, beach volleyball or just sitting by the pool or beach. At only 100 rooms (no TVs but they do have iHomes and they have wireless but it was inconsistent) with nightly, good quality entertainment, we felt lucky to have stumbled upon this resort. Only downside is being 75 minutes from the main airport and few direct flights. One of the few places we will go back to.

Room Tip: We went with middle level rooms which turned out to be right by the main pool - an excellent choice...

The holiday was very relaxing and all of the staff very attentive two small problems the occasional flight to Barbados flies over the hotel a little noisey if it's a private jet! My biggest gripe was that I paid 20 us for internet access and it was free to all! But hey $20 on the whole cost not bank breaking. The evening entertainment as was excellent as was the food and menu choice. The book only restaurant was very busy book early, and if your the last sitting a little rushed. But all in all excellent.

Had a wonderful week's stay here as part of our honeymoon. Were made to feel very special by all the staff. Particular thanks to Yarmi for making some activities so hilarious to participate in. Recommend that it is made clearer that the 'casino night' is in aid of a local charity (a school I think we were told?) and also suggest that the menus are more local-based (fresh grilled fish!). We particularly enjoyed and appreciated the discover scuba diving experience included in the price - something we otherwise would possibly never have done! Overall a brilliant place to stay.

Room Tip: Premium garden room was great.

My wife and I have just returned from a week's honeymoon at the Rendezvous, and all in all, we had a great time.

First of all, let me say we did our homework and chose Rendezvous because of its size (small) and the reviews about the ambience as we wanted a reasonably chilled honeymoon without too many activities. Please bear this in mind for this review.

OK, so the welcome to the Rendezvous by Nadia was excellent and we were quickly given the key info and sent off to our room to settle in with the orientation the next morning. We stayed in the Luxury Beach Front rooms (347) and had a spacious but simple room with a very warm en-suite and balcony. The first digit for the rooms denotes the floor you are on (1 ground, 3 second) and the en-suites for these rooms are glass fronted, facing the sun in the morning and not cooled by air con or fan which means they can get a bit hot. However, this settles down once the sun has moved and set. With our room being near the far end of the block and on the top floor, our balcony was visited by a lot of birds who left a lot of mess on our daybed - this was cleared by the maids daily so wasn’t too much of an issue but it did mean that the bed was not usable until housekeeping had serviced the room. I think this bird attack was only concentrated in our room as the rest appeared to be fine. If you get this room, ask for a clean hammock and you’ll have no problems.

I think to hit on the positives, the gardens and wildlife are vibrant and everywhere you look. There are a range of geckos, birds (including occasional hummingbirds), butterflies and other animals getting on with their business in some beautiful and well maintained grounds. There is a spit of beach out front with a mix of parasol covered loungers, day beds and sun soaked beds for all tastes. We never had to go looking for a bed, and usually wandered down between 7am and 9am and never had to fight for space and viewing the room lights, it did not feel like the resort was empty.

However, there is also the matter of the local small airport. You will hear a flight at 7am Monday to Friday and 8:30 on the weekend and a further 8 - 10 flights during the day (small props or personal jets). I have to say I was not bothered too much by these, and if you choose to pop over to Martinique you will be on one of them :) On the noise front, the gardens are bordering on civilised rainforest, as a result there are all kinds of night time noise, which is relaxing to some, constant to others. However, I do not think this will be any different anywhere in St Lucia, and personally helped us fall asleep when our bodies were waking up at BST! If you are a light sleeper, we would recommend that you bring ear plugs.

The staff are very friendly, and will give what they receive. They will be chatty with the chatty types, playful with the outgoing and respectful of those who just want to move from room to beach. I think we fell somewhere near the latter, got everything we asked for, but were not proffered anything or pushed anything we did not want. The resort does not offer room service, you will need to think about the drinks you want in the mini-bar pretty quickly and sort this via the great reception staff. However there is fresh chilled water in the room every day, and the resort is a good size, so nothing is too far apart. Every member of staff is very knowledgeable about all areas of the resort so any time you are unsure, just ask! Jasmine the General Manager hosts a drinks party at the main pool every Wednesday; this is a great opportunity to meet and gauge the team and chat with other guests. On our stay there was some excellent steel drum accompaniment also.

The team at the spa are great. I have seen some comments about the spa and the lack of treatments. I think they cover the essentials and do them extremely well. We took the couples massage (25% arrival discount with Virgin) where my wife had a Balinese massage and I chose a deep tissue massage, both excellent, but I definitely knew where all my muscles were after mine!

The water sports team are also great, get to know them! You can hack out with a catamaran, go windsurfing, scuba and snorkelling (and yes the snorkelling is elsewhere) but I just went for a decent swim in the sea every day and the water is great. The guys know the best places to take you to see the best sights for snorkelling and scuba, so I would not worry if that’s your thing.

The drinks service was good, the guys will bring drinks from 10am onwards. However if the bar gets busy this will slow down and it is not consistent. One day we only had one drink offered. There is water nearby, and the bar is only 3 mins away, but a more regular beach service would be good (this was the area down by the sea, furthest from the bar). The pools looked great but we settled for the sea every time :) We were disappointed with the lack of premium vodkas (no Belvedere or Grey Goose), but the rum and cocktails do go a long way towards making up for this - we can highly recommend the rum punch and rum coolers!

There have been comments about the age range of guests, and the residents did range from 20s to 80s. However there is a real sense of community in the resort, the mix of staff and guests and the ability just to chat to anyone was great. For example there was a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary during our stay and listening to their stories was great. For us there was a great mix of wedding-mooners, young couples and all sorts that made it a really diverse. It is not a club 18-30 resort, if you want more of a buzzing holiday, look elsewhere I guess! This is very much a chilled out and laid back resort!

Finally, the food! As a spice fiend, and a foodie to boot I was nervous about the buffet having read some of the reviews on here. My fears were unfounded thought as the food was excellent! The flavour combinations the chefs pulled off were great. There is a real French and Creole influence and enough choice to either make you satisfied or very fat. The spicy heat was missing but there is lots of local pepper sauce on hand if you wanted more heat in your dish. The one restaurant onsite, The Trysting Place requires reservations to eat.

The decor in The Trysting Place is a little twee, but it has a charm to itself. There was a real romantic layout, and really attentive staff. However the food was excellent; I cannot recommend the steaks enough, having had a perfect blue steak. I would also recommend going off the house wine and take something off the wine list, the Sancerre, and Pinot Noir were both excellent. We ate twice during our stay and although we loved both sittings, we also missed the buffet which surprised us, not because of the servings, we were fed well, but the choice was always hard to choose which night to book.

Finally, nothing to do with the resort, but the excursions have to be mentioned. The Piton and Volcano tour was excellent but it is a long day, 8:30 to 17:00 (there is a boating alternative but you will not get the views of the island). The Tranopy / Andreline tours of the rainforest by Gondola or Zip wire were excellent (with also the classiest of the souvenirs).

What would have my definite recommendation is the Sugar to Rum tour. Storming Norman is your guide who will let you see St Lucia in all of its raw beauty. The tour will follow the old sugar plantations to the modern rum factory. What we loved is that it obvious that Norman is helping some of the poorer and genuine areas of the island, we saw some real poverty, but no begging, pushing or peddling which made it a great tour. Also you get to shop at the Rum Factory's shop, where the prices were better than Duty Free. So my advice would be to hold off buying your spirits until the leg home, and see what is on offer, the Crystal Lime Rum is great.

If you can, book a helicopter flight back to the airport if you want to maximise your holiday time; I was still in the sea at 14:00 for a 16:25 flight back to the UK! The Virgin Check and Chill was great too and it allowed us to take advantage of the departure lounge at the resort which was a nice extra touch and put off the inevitable trudge home.

So, all in all a great trip! As a honeymooning couple we were also given a welcome basket of treats, fruit, flowers and champagne on arrival. However the slight shabbiness of the rooms and lack of room service made it hard to have a romantic hideaway night without paying extra for it. I hope I have given a balanced review and if you choose to go you have a great time!

Room Tip: Do not worry about being close to stuff there is plenty of room. Beach front Rooms were ace, ask for...

Stayed here for our honeymoon in June 2010. Had an amazing time. The staff can not do enough for you. The hotel is located on a beautiful beach. There is a bar pool, a jacuzzi and a normal pool. There is also a gym great bars and entertainment all day and night.

The only faults I could think of we're that the bathroom In our garden view room could have done with updating. Also some of the staff serving food seemed a bit miserable at times. But saying that it is the best holiday I have ever been on and would definately return. But would maybe book a sea view room as they looked a bit more modern and Newley built.
