Divi Little Bay Beach Resort
Ranked #2 of 12 Hotels in Philipsburg
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 7 April 2012

Peaceful, beautiful views, walk out to the beach, good snorkeling and easy access to Philipsburg shopping are the highlights of our visit last week.
We stayed for six nights at the hotel in a second floor king room. The view from the patio was absolutely beautiful We could see the entire bay and all of the beach activity. The room was clean and in decent order considering the age of the property. (We found Divi Little Bay in 1988 on our first visit to Saint Martin) When we weren't sight seeing, our day started with a walk on the 1/2 mile beach, breakfast at the Gingerbread Cafe at the adjacent property (less expensive than the buffet at Divi Little Bay). Then sunning on the beach with free chairs and umbrellas, watersports and snorkeling. Happy hour at the pool starts at 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM at the beach bar.

Pros - great location, easy access to the beach, 5 minute drive to Phillipsburg and only 20 mintues from the airport. The rocks along the edges of the bay had lots of fish and there is a snorkeling park at the southeast end that is a 1/4 mile swim. The staff provided good service once you got their attention. We ate at the bar several times and had island drinks all week long. The food was very good, just a limited menu and the drinks were always good.

Cons - couple minor maintenance issues with the room and one major one. First the major, the A/C wasn't working when we checked in. I thought it was because of energy efficiency that the room wouldn't cool lower than 78 degrees. My error. Once I asked them twice to look at it an engineer fixed it that same afternoon. Then minor issues were a missing lamp shade, broken clock radio and poor TV reception. Again, after asking twice to have these addressed the shade and clock radio were taken care of. They never worked on the poor TV reception (even though it was satelite). My brother was staying two doors away and didn't have any issues at all.

When we go back to the Carribean Divi Little Bay will be our first choice. We would have rated it five stars except for the maintenance issues we had and the furnishings being "long in the tooth". However, my wife and I stayed at Atlantis on Paradise Island three years ago and we found Divi Little Bay to be a much more relaxed, peaceful and enjoyable experience. I wouldn't even consider the glitz and expense of Atlantis again.

Room Tip: Staying in hotel ask for 2nd Floor so you can leave the patio door open at night.

We have been timeshare owners at DLB since 5 weeks before Hurricane Luis hit in 1995 and know the resort very well. Though the resort has struggled with "rotating manager syndrome" over the years, it is now in fine shape. The main beach is well-tended with plenty of loungers and umbrellas as well as an attendant to help with set-up. Gizmo's Beach Bar is right on the beach, and serves an excellent lunch. Pool areas (Sea Breeze over by the time share buildings and Sea Breeze Restaurant, casitas pool above Gizmo's and the Infinity Pool on the hill beyond the timeshare buildings) are very clean and well-maintained with loungers, sunny areas and shade areas.

The grounds are also well-maintained, with lawns trimmed and plantings nicely pruned. The setting, on it's own small peninsula with water all around, is unique and lovely. Walk up the hill to Fort Amsterdam to watch the cruise ships arrive in Great Bay in the morning--or leave at sunset.

The staff, especially the new acting general manager (Celine) and the rooms manager (Sandra), are very committed to making guests happy.

The hotel rooms are from another era, square and small. BUT they all front directly on the beach--a feature that captured us on our first visit. They also have been renovated with updated furnishings--and you can get a small fridge just by asking.

If you are exchanging for a timeshare unit (studio, 1-BR luxury, 2 BR luxury) as opposed to booking a hotel room, your experience will depend upon the unit you are assigned. The 1 BR units on the ground floor overlooking Great Bay are our favorites...lots of lawn to stretch out on, private patios with loungers and outdoor dining furniture. There are no elevators, so if you have an issue with stairs, ask for a ground floor unit. 1 BR luxury units on the Little Bay side have washer and dryers and two balconies/patios. All units have large master baths and towels are very high-end and replaced daily.

The Great Bay side has constant and lovely breezes, the Little Bay side less so--which makes for good snorkeling and floating in the ocean. You can always count on comfortable water temps for ocean swimming.

Kitchens don't have ovens (just microwave/convection ovens), but there are cooktops which work well, good fridges and enough kitchen/dining stuff to cook in if you want. A call to housekeeping will get you anything else you need very speedily.

The entire resort was renovated a few years ago. Some of the units are now showing signs of wear, but overall the property is quite unique, casual and comfortable. It is not an ultra-luxury resort--doesn't rise to the standard of the Westin at Dawn Beach, for example. Still, we love it.

Room Tip: All hotel rooms are beach front--you can't get better views/access to a beach on St. Maarten. Ti...

My husband and I travel extensively, but we will NEVER return to or recommend this resort. We were treated like second class citizens from the time we checked in, and things only got worse. We were informed we were being downgraded from a studio suite to a hotel room on check in, but worse than that, we were told there would be no compensation consideration AND for what we paid, we should be happy with the room we were given. We met three other couples who experienced the same thing, and we were NEVER moved to a suite during our week stay, even though we were promised at check -in the we would be moved as soon as a suite opened. The manager, Dawne, was rude, crass, and actually used vulgar language with us. When hearing about our experience, our booking agent offered a free week elsewhere, but we have also sent a letter to the president and CEO of Divi resorts in hope of some response to the terrible way we were treated. Regarding the resort, overall, the beach helpers were wonderful. The food choices were ok, but VERY limited. Our hotel room was 2 to 3 star rated, at best. Cleanliness of the pool areas was very good, but of other common areas, it was fair. Most of the staff were very nice, but Dawne has no business interacting with the public, and will destroy the reputation of this resort if permitted to remain in her current position.

We visit Little Divi Bay every year. I would pass up a free trip to Hawaii before I passed up my trip to St. Maarten! Little Divi Bay is paradise to say the least. You have not been to a beach and a beautiful, friendly resort until you have been here. The cruise ships do not offer excursions here anymore, so we take a taxi every year, and we are on the beach by 8:30am. Go! You will never regret it! There are chairs, umbrellas, snorkel equipment, jet skis, boogie boards, two places onsite to eat, one on the beach, a bar, restrooms, a little grocery store, anything you need, not to mention how beautiful and clean it is! We go again in May! I cannot wait!

Room Tip: You won't go wrong here!

I would rate Divi as a 3 star property. All inlcusive is not an option but there is a decent grill on site for lunch and is nice for a first meal when you arrive. We stayed here in September of 2009 with two other friends. We had a villa straight back the main walkway, facing downtown Phillipsburg. The Little Bay was the most wonderful water to swim in on any vacation yet! The bay was so calm and warm; you could stay in the ocen all day. They also offered on site snorkling, which was really great. Lots of fish and ocean life just a short swim out of the bay on the left. The infinity pool was amazing and overlooked Little Bay. There was also another pool and hot tub overlooking the bay. Chairs and umbrellas on the beach were plentiful and the sand was so soft. We found a great jet ski excursion just down the beach on the right. About $80 a person for an hour. The guide took us out to sea and we explored several bays along the coast; wonderful views of the island on the Dutch side. I highly recommend renting a Jeep from Thrifty for the week and exploring both sides of the island. We had a blast driving around seeing the landscape and locals, as well as checking out various beaches on both the Dutch and French sides. Resaurants were all very good--definitely on island time and a bit pricey. There are plenty of grocery stores nearby so we shopped and ate breakfast and lunch in the villa each day. We did a snorkling excursion one day, which I highly recommend due to the clear, calm waters and all the colorful fish, sea turtles and rays. Rooms were clean and roomy. Maid service was good. Check-in and Check-out was easy. Drive is less than 30 minutes from airport and easy to find.

Room Tip: rooms in the villas facing the cruise ship bay are beautiful! You can see downtown Phillipsburg and...

My best friend and our wives travel several time a year together. We read the reviews and never having visited St Maarten, decided that the additional cost for higher rated property was our best choice. There's a dead man's curve to try to enter the property off of a hill. The staff was rude at check in. The bell man who helped with our baggage never said a word, and when given a tip never even said thank you. Our room was the biggest disappointment. My wife and I travel a lot, this was the worse resort we've ever stayed at, with the rudest staff. At checkout we were never thanked or asked how our stay was. There were 10 repairs that had to be done to the room, and we never had a working phone or the correct number of towels every day;the entire stay, the gap in the exterior door allowed rain to pour in and we had a ;large puddle of water in front of the bathroom every day, some from the condensation from the AC. There was a sewer smell every day walking to the restaurant. Also I paid 1900 and some dollars for the week, yet the resort statement indicated 1500 and some dollars I never got an explanation for the difference. I will say the views and location were great, the AC worked and we had hot water in the rusted tub.

I will never stay at a Divi Divi property. J

We have stayed at Divi Little Bay Beach Resort in St. Maarten many times. We love the beautiful atmosphere of the resort, the gorgeous views from our balcony of cruise ships coming and going out. The island is called the "Friendly Island" and that is so true. Those who work at this resort couldn't be nicer and more helpful. I would recommend it highly to everyone with small families all the way to golden years.

Room Tip: Ask to have a room which faces the bay where the cruise ships arrive and depart. So beautiful see th...
