We took an 8 day bareboat charter and had a lovely time at Tamarind Club. For chartering, it is perfect.
Tamarind Club is not a hotel nor is it a motel. It is an 8 exterior adjoining guest rooms with a pool, swim-up bar, restaurant and lobby owned and operated by a family. You are a guest in the context of a guest in their home. the Tamarind Club is owned by Cindy, who runs the kindergarten class at the local school. Her staff are her son Clint, daughter Cat and husband Eric, plus five or six extended family members who have been there about 10 years.
On our first night before the charter, we were greeted by Cat, who lead us to the bar and poured us the classic BVI drink called a "pain killer". When we were finished, I noticed that ALL of our luggage was missing. Cat had put the luggage in our room. Purses and All! She pointed out our room and we went up to take a nap. After our nap we discovered we had no room keys. Guests in a family home indeed. That night was live music and the open air bar and restaurant were packed. Mostly with locals. Everyone knew each other and we felt again like family guests whose host had thrown a party.
When we returned, Eric gave us a big hug (there is nothing small about Eric) and brought out some leftovers from last nights dinner special (scrumptious!) assuming that we were hungry and tired from the trip. Another round of painkillers and off to a 3 hour nap. Cat suggested we put one foot on the floor to avoid the back to land spins.
That night was trivia contest. Again, packed with locals who were trivia monsters. I asked Clint how they kept someone from Googling the answers and he replied that they turn the Internet off. The island is that small and casual that they can turn the Internet off and no guest complains. Two tables tied at 42 out of 50. Out came a vertical checkers like game and the best two out of three won a free dinner.
We packed the next morning and left with hugs all around and melancholy that we couldn't stay longer.
I will forewarn you that there is a Labrador Retriever next door that sometimes escapes to swim in the pool. Clint throws him a ball for a few minutes to help with his hip dysplasia. If this grosses you out, then this isn't the place for you. If the roosters, who are kind enough to start crowing a about 9AM and then again at happy hour makes you smile, than this is your place.
