We took an 8 day bareboat charter and had a lovely time at Tamarind Club. For chartering, it is perfect.

Tamarind Club is not a hotel nor is it a motel. It is an 8 exterior adjoining guest rooms with a pool, swim-up bar, restaurant and lobby owned and operated by a family. You are a guest in the context of a guest in their home. the Tamarind Club is owned by Cindy, who runs the kindergarten class at the local school. Her staff are her son Clint, daughter Cat and husband Eric, plus five or six extended family members who have been there about 10 years.

On our first night before the charter, we were greeted by Cat, who lead us to the bar and poured us the classic BVI drink called a "pain killer". When we were finished, I noticed that ALL of our luggage was missing. Cat had put the luggage in our room. Purses and All! She pointed out our room and we went up to take a nap. After our nap we discovered we had no room keys. Guests in a family home indeed. That night was live music and the open air bar and restaurant were packed. Mostly with locals. Everyone knew each other and we felt again like family guests whose host had thrown a party.

When we returned, Eric gave us a big hug (there is nothing small about Eric) and brought out some leftovers from last nights dinner special (scrumptious!) assuming that we were hungry and tired from the trip. Another round of painkillers and off to a 3 hour nap. Cat suggested we put one foot on the floor to avoid the back to land spins.

That night was trivia contest. Again, packed with locals who were trivia monsters. I asked Clint how they kept someone from Googling the answers and he replied that they turn the Internet off. The island is that small and casual that they can turn the Internet off and no guest complains. Two tables tied at 42 out of 50. Out came a vertical checkers like game and the best two out of three won a free dinner.

We packed the next morning and left with hugs all around and melancholy that we couldn't stay longer.

I will forewarn you that there is a Labrador Retriever next door that sometimes escapes to swim in the pool. Clint throws him a ball for a few minutes to help with his hip dysplasia. If this grosses you out, then this isn't the place for you. If the roosters, who are kind enough to start crowing a about 9AM and then again at happy hour makes you smile, than this is your place.

There is no potable water provided, you must buy it and it is expensive unless you have a car to bring in several gallons. The owner has not done maintenance on the rooms. The shower does not drain. The doors do not close properly and we were bitten by mosquitoes. The owner's adult children work there and are very friendly, but the owner was not. He was also unhelpful, sarcastic, belittled the help in front of the guests, and we found it pleasanter to avoid him at all times. It is too bad too, because it is close to a great beach (20 minute walk) and the fantastic Surf School BVI.

Want a nice quiet place to stay for a few days? Don't want to have to walk or hire a taxi to go out to eat? Want to lounge by the pool and just swim up to the bar? This is the place! We've eaten here several times in the past but had never stayed. However they scrambled to accommodate us 4 couples at the 11th hour when our reservations elsewhere didn't work out. Can't wait to stay here again.

We stayed at Tamarind for 2 nights before moving to west end. You can not ask for nicer staff or owners. We met a few locals and had a great time. The food is very good in the restaurant also. The rooms are clean and the AC works great. The pool was great for hanging out in after a day at the beach. We had a very nice continental breakfast every morning that was included with the room. If you need a place to stay for a couple of nights this is the place. The only reason I would not stay here longer is because you do not have your own kitchen.

Great for Sunday brunch, every kind of eggs you can think of washed down with a free mimosa..... Although we had champagne & cranberry which was delicious. The Fish & Chips were delicious, moist delicate fish surrounded by a crunchy, spiced breaded shell.....I could have eaten that again. There is a pool there and live music. It's an all-day affair. Lots of ex-pats.

The rooms are VERY basic. No Phone, No TV, no Clock. They advertise WIFI but it is NOT available in the rooms.
Cleanliness of the rooms was disappointing. Cobwebs in the shower, multiple light bulbs burnt out.
Mildew in the window A/C unit. We could not figure out how to lock our room door (which was a sliding glass door)
Ok... now for the positive......Bar/Pool setup was very nice. Staff were very friendly. Dinner was very good.
I so want to rate this place higher, but based on the above I just can't. It is reasonably priced and an OK place to crash coming or going to Tortola for the night, convenient to the airport.

Room Tip: Needy travelers should consider elsewhere

Tamarind Club, is a wonderful hidden gem, delicious food, fun friendly amazing staff, a short walk to incredible beach called Joshia's Bay where you can get surf lessons. I love unique fun filled laid back atmospher. I've been staying there for years and will continue to start my annual BVI Island hopping trip ther. Enjoy
