The Palm Trees House was awesome.
My wife, best friend and I stayed at the Palm Trees House in early November for 6 nights
The accommodations were very comfortable. The veranda is gorgeous, spectacular views morning, noon and night. And the view from the master bedroom shower is unbelievable!
Diane and Stenna were kind, Informative and helpful. Sparrow Beach (2 minute walk) was perfect. Mostly deserted, great snorkeling, lots of fish and lobsters just off shore. Plenty of shell and sea glass hunting. The Palm Trees is a great location do get away from the stresses of daily life.
The people of Carriacou are friendly and kind. We rented a car from “Wayne’s Garage in Hillsborough. You have to get a local driver’s license but it was easy and reasonable. It was easy to get around. Hard to get lost, there was always a friendly face to point us in the right direction. We made a number of friends and look forward to our next visit. We had a phenomenal dinner at the Round House and a great day boating and snorkeling with Ms. Allison, ‘Isle of Reefs’ tours.
Until next time, safe travels
Wayne

Dear Wayne,

I'm so glad you all had a good holiday and found that the advertising lived up to the experience. Every window or door you look through has a fantastic view and having Sparrows Bay to yourself with half a mile of sandy beach, safe swimming and good snorkelling is a bonus. I think the Kayaks (residents of Carriacou) are genuinely the most friendly, helpful and honest people I have ever met - nothing is too much trouble to help a stranger. And on an island 7miles x3, I think you could really say it is impossible to get lost! We are all glad that Roxanne is back and Round House is open again.

As great as the daytime views at Palm Trees are - even from the shower - try to make your next visit over full moon as the moonlight shimmering on the sea is just magical - recently made even more so by a white owl gliding majestically by, in total silence.

We look forward to welcoming you back before too long, and in the meantime, please keep in touch and we wish you Happy Thanksgiving!

“Homely and unpretentious with stunning views”
Reviewed November 20, 2016 for a stay in November 2016

Anyone going to Carriacou is already in a relaxed mindset - you know you're not going to get nightclubs and bars in every street corner; this is an island of families and communities. Palm Trees is a continuation of that mindset. The pictures from previous travellers say it all - over 180 degree views over sea, sunset and ships, but what they don;t convey is the constant and gentle sound of the sea, banishing any last vestiges of stress which may be lingering from your journey here. The owner has left no stone unturned, from a grater complete with nutmeg to garnish your rum punch, fascinating books about the island and its characters, a housebook with every possible detail crossed and dotted, and a lovely, kind lady to meet and greet you. I recommend taking plenty of Mozzie spray (although the house owner has supplies of these in the house, guests normally leave their stocks for future guests, as if to continue the spirit of homely generosity. No AC means you have to acclimatise quickly, but this is easy as there are always cooling breezes running through the house ( long sliding doors to the verandah from two of the rooms) as well as plenty of fans. Hot water from the two showers is instant and the wi-fi had a good connection when we were there. All boxes ticked. We found ourselves cutting short our days to get back to the house for the sunsets. We just loved it.
If hiring a jeep, make sure you get a decent four-wheel drive as the sloping drive can be a challenge in wet weather. I recommend Wayne Bullen when booking with the owner, or you can book direct with him. A taxi from the airport can also be prebooked and costs 35 EC dollars ( about 10 GBP).

Dear Maggie

Thank you for your kind and generous review of Palm Trees. I concur completely with your opinion that it is unpretentious and homely – and deliberately so. I want my guests to relax when they walk in the door and feel right at home, rather than being in a soul-less hotel which is much the same anywhere in the world. Not only do we provide a nutmeg grater, but sugar, rice, pasta, cooking oil, herbs, sauces etc are all shared with our guests to make life easy if they want to do some cooking - what could be nicer than fresh fish – straight from the sea.

The view is undoubtedly the star of the show, and as you say, the magnificent sunsets and the sound of the lapping waves are the icing on the cake. The mozzie situation does vary hugely from one week to another, and when we were there in October we hardly saw any, but heavy rains provide puddles for them to breed, so yes, I do try and suggest to guests that they take spay containing 40-50% Deet. However, as you say, I do always leave a couple bottles of Deet out for guests in case they forget to take.

I must admit I’ve never used 4 wheel drive to get up our short drive, but we do have a sturdy jeep. Regarding the taxi, we ask guests to let our local manager, Stenna, know their arrival times, and she will always send a taxi driver who knows Palm Trees to collect you. Stenna will meet you at Palm Trees and make sure you are happy with everything. As I say, my mantra is to go the extra mile or two, and we do all we can to make guests feel relaxed and help them to enjoy every minute of their precious holiday at Palm Trees. Thank you for confirming that we have largely succeeded.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon,
Diana

“Looks just like the photos”
Reviewed November 5, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

We stayed for 9 days at this beautiful beach house. There is nothing fancy about it but that is the beauty of it. The owner has it stocked with everything you could need and it is in a lovely quiet location with spectacular views. We were there for the recent tropical storm and the owner was in contact and certainly was concerned for our well being. She had the gardener even come to leave us buckets of water in case the electricity went out.
The property manager Stenna is a wonderful lady and certainly takes great care of you. The house is a short walk to the main road to catch a bus although we preferred to walk into town and catch a bus back. No problems catching buses and all,of the drivers were really friiendly. The beach is just a short stroll away and you pretty much have it to yourself. The only thing that would stop us from going back to this house is that there is no air conditioning but there are lots of fans. What you see is what you get and the view can't be beat !

Thank you Diane for your review – and indeed we try to ensure that what you see is what you get! Having the sandy beach just steps way, all to yourself, is also a highlight for us. I note your comment about air-con, but I would just say that September was exceptionally hot this year – as was Oct when I was there! When we're in, we have all the doors and windows open all day, and use the sun-blinds, which all help to keep the house cooler. Sea breeze plus fans is adequate most of the year. To install air-con, we would have to install glassed windows, and remove the louvred turret that channels hot air up and out; and would thereby lose the lovely cool sea-breezes which waft through the whole house 24/7. We try to be environmentally friendly, and we're aware that all fuel has to be brought from Venezuela to Grenada, then onwards to Carriacou, so it is expensive. We would not be able to rent Palm Trees for US$700 a week, and the result would be that fewer people would be able to enjoy the sunny Caribbean. So, everything in life is a balance, and we’ve chosen the low-key beach house option of enjoying God’s fresh air, plus fans when necessary. There is a ceiling fan in the living room, wall fans in the kitchen and single bedroom, two fans in the bedroom, and a spare upright fan in the living room. We do hope you will return one day to enjoy the house, the fantastic view, the hammocks, the beach and the friendly people - perhaps at a cooler time of year. Diana

“Beautiful house in peaceful Craigston”
Reviewed July 21, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We spent a wonderful week in Palm Tree House. The verandah offers a beautiful 180° view on the western coast of Carriacou. The house is really fully equipped: the owners thought trough every detail, from the mosquito net to the hammock and the nutmeg grater. The path to the beach is very short and goes along a cemetery shaded by flamboyants. The beach itself is sandy, but also very nice for snorkeling and almost desert. It is possible to walk from the house to Hillsborough, but joining the main road to take a bus is also a good option and will take less than 10 minutes. The garden is lush and beautiful; we observed bananaquits and hummingbirds harvesting nectar from the flowers. We would absolutely recommend this house to anybody looking to spend a heavenly vacation in the peaceful nature.

Dear Matt J,
Thank you for your review and I am very glad your family enjoyed your stay on Carriacou and loved Palm Trees. Unlike many owners, we leave out all our stuff for our guests, and welcome our guests like extended family. Hence we provide all the little extras like local spices, herbs, cooking oils, washing up liquid etc. And since grated nutmeg is an essential ingredient on the top of the local Rum Punch, naturally I provide a nutmeg grater with a nutmeg in the top!
I'm so glad you took time to s-l-o-w down and enjoy the man varieties of birds in the tropical garden, especially the tiny darting humming birds. It sounds like you spent a lot of time relaxing on the veranda, and in the hammocks, and enjoying those magnificent sea views, with the occasional herons and pelicans diving for their lunch, and the occasional boat sailing or chugging along. These simple things can provide much free entertainment. Very relaxing! Who needs TV?!!
Thank you again for taking the time to write a Review, even though I know English is not your first language. I look forward to welcoming you back before too long.

We stayed at Palm Trees for four weeks in May 2016.
Diana was very helpful via email and concerned about
us enjoying our stay on Carriacou. Stenna, her local
property manager, was equally helpful in person.

Palm Trees is on a very quiet cul de sac and a short
walk to a convenient bus route to Hillsborough and the
rest of Carriacou. (We didn't find a need for a rental car,
but we like to walk). The home was very well equipped
in every respect.

From the veranda we had the best ocean view we have
ever had. We were entertained for countless hours
just watching the fishing boats, ferries and yachts
pass by and many unforgettable sunsets.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay at Palm Trees, and enjoyed the unique peace and quiet that it offers, together with spectacular sea views on every side - even from the kitchen sink! I never wear a watch at Palm Trees as the day is punctuated by the sound of the early fishing boats, followed by the arrival of the school boat with the students from Petite Martinique, the fishing boats returning with their fresh catch, then Osprey's arrival/departure etc. As you say there is always free entertainment!
You said you like walking, and Stenna said you took the opportunity to explore nearly every cove and hamlet, as well as climbing every hill, then relaxing in the lovely clear waters at Sparrows Bay. And at the end of a busy day, what better way to watch those amazing sunsets than relaxing in the hammocks with a nice cold drink.
Thank you again for your positive review, and we hope to welcome you back to Palm Trees soon.

“A wonderful stay”
Reviewed May 28, 2016 for a stay in March 2016

My husband and I have spent a wonderful week at this property in March 2016. The communication with Diana and Stenna, the local manager who welcomed us, was very easy and helpful. The house is wonderful. It has a 180° seaview, from Sandy island to Union. The verandah is perfect, we have spent a couple of days just relaxing in the hammock and/or reading. The house has not just an excellent choice of books (I especially enjoyed the memoirs of Diana's father who spent most of his lifetime in Carriacou), but (unlike most other rentals I have stayed in) there is a solution for every possible problem, including itch remedy and a bottle that can be taken to the beach to wash off sand. With Diana's very helpful labelling system in the house and her guest directory full of valuable information about the island it is easy to find everything. The house is also wonderfully decorated, with many thoughtful details. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you could wish for, including a wide variety of spices guests can use. The only thing we were missing at night is air conditioning, but it is completely understandable that Diana would rather keep the open concept of the house, also the fans were very helpful. The house has a beautiful garden and it is close to Sparrow Bay, a secluded beach. Also Hillsborough is only a short bus or car ride away. The week spent in Carriacou was the highlight of our three-week holiday in Grenada and the Grenadines and we hope to be back again someday.

Thank you very much for your impartial review of Palm Trees. It was a real pleasure to read that your week at Palm Trees was the highlight of your three week holiday. Stella and I do indeed try to go the extra mile - or two - and provide cooking oils, sauces, herbs, paper napkins etc as it is impractical to buy stuff for one weeks holiday. Little ideas like the large water bottle to take to the beach to wash the sand off your feet costs nothing, but makes it a lot more comfortable walking home from the beach! (A tip learned from childhood.)
We note your comment re air-conditioning, but as I've mentioned in the Guest Directory, before we could install air-con, we would have to change all the windows, and lower the roof and remove the turret in the bedroom roof that funnels the heat up and out of the room - so a total change would be necessary and then it would not be the real Caribbean! We try to be environmentally friendly, and in addition we would have to increase our prices, which would exclude some guests. One guest described the open concept of the house as feeling you're in a tree house when every window and door is open, and we really value that, as it is such a complete change from our life in the UK. (And yours in Germany!) Glad to hear you made use of the two tall fans with remotes, so you can each have it on your preferred speed and angle etc.
The temperature on Carriacou does vary, and many guests say how much they enjoy the lovely sea breeze wafting through the bedroom all night, rather than being in a stuffy closed-in room with air-con, which would be just like any hotel room anywhere!
And yes, it is our home, not primarily a rental property, and everything we use we leave out for our guests, and that includes cooking sauces and herbs, a full first aid box - and a mini one for guests to take to the beach, and insect repellent, itch remedy, sun cream etc. In other words, we try it make it home from home, and I'm glad you appreciated that.
We look forward to welcoming you back someday.

“Incredibly beautiful and soooo relaxing!”
Reviewed May 13, 2016 for a stay in April 2016

Stayed here with my wife in April and I can't say enough good things about it. From planning our trip until our departure, Diana was so helpful and accommodating, answering all of our questions in detail and offering great suggestions for our stay. The place itself has a 180 degree view of the ocean that can't be beat. It is open and airy, very comfortable, and extremely clean and organized. No air conditioning, but honestly, I wouldn't have wanted to use it anyway because it is so nice to have the windows and doors open to the veranda. It's a 2 minute walk to a private beach where we saw no one else. Short walk down the road and it's easy to catch a quick bus into town. If you want a relaxing place where you can truly get away from it all, this is the place for you.
