Stayed at the RWI for 5 nights recently and have to report that the experience was basic and at best only ok. Had it not been for the great bartenders and wait staff - would probably rate a two due to lack of happy attitudes and lack of service overall.

The front desk staff is mediocre at recommendations for the island, we finally just started asking other guests. The beach staff has major attitude - we asked for some guidance on sailing the Hobie Cat (sailed before only wanted a few tips) and were told,"no they were too busy"! We proceeded to watch the "3 busy men" stand and hand out tbeach towels for the next 4 hours - too funny. Not sure what the business entailed! other than they didn't want to work Also got attitude when asking for 2 towels - that doesn't seem to fall within policy.

The beach is great and did have fun with the bar staff - ate lunch every day at the resort and was pretty good. Did not really enjoy our dinner - that was mediocre at best. Highly recommend Coco Bistro for dinner - was excellent.

Diving in Provo is fabulous and may be back to the island again, will rethink our hotel selection next round.

We had a botanical studio which was the bargain basement room and we we're happily surprised at the lovely view overlooking lush palms, a pool, and even the sea in the distance. It had an almost full-size refrigerator, a coffee maker, dishes, cups, utensils, a microwave, ( same one we have at home ) full size terrace with table and 4 chairs, washer dryer, and a large flat panel tv. The air conditioner, and ceiling fan worked well. For all of this, it was was easy to overlook, 2 or 3 small aesthetic imperfections.

The grounds were kept beautifully , with 2 pools, a small kiddie pool, and jacuzzi. The beachfront was fabulous, snorkeling gear available, and loungers and umbrellas at the ready by the attentive staff.

We ate at the restaurant twice and found the cracked conch and shrimp and veg tempura wonderfully satisfying. All the staff were pleasant and helpful, and we look forward to our next trip.

We spent a wonderful two weeks at the Royal West Indies (Unit #521- VRBO #299489 / Homeaway #289201) and loved every minute of it! This property was the perfect match for our vacation style…and for our budget!

The Island:.Easy. Safe. Beautiful. The island is very flat and easy to get around. As with other scrubby islands, the views are only in the beach/water. One can’t deny Grace Bay is a gorgeous stretch of beach. I wouldn’t put it at #1, but I can see why some would. The sand and the water are both spectacular, the quality you would expect on such an expensive island. Grace Bay is a perfect mix of Meads Bay on Anguilla and Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. Our favorite spot to relax was Taylor Bay. We also liked the Pelican Beach & Bight areas on Grace Bay and Sapodilla Bay. Chalk Sound is pretty stunning, but you can’t get any really spectacular views because it’s all private land.

The Resort: Intimate. Relaxing. Gorgeous. The layout of the property gave it a very intimate, private feeling. You barely noticed the buildings because of all the lush greenery and trees. The landscaping is gorgeous and tended to by the largest army of gardeners I have ever seen – especially for being such a small property. They definitely take pride in the appearance and atmosphere of the resort. The pools and lounge areas were wonderful and, again, the layout was pleasing. The in-pool lights at night, combined with the lush surroundings, lent the resort a very romantic, tropical outpost feel. RWI’s stretch of beach is beautiful, much quieter than other areas, with lovely sunsets right over the water. Everything on the property was very clean and well maintained. Towels were constantly collected and refreshed. We only ate at Pelican Bay (the restaurant) once, but we were very happy with the food. Oh, and we had a BLAST at the Monday night deck party – great food, drinks, and music!
The People: Friendly. Inviting. We found the staff at RWI to be the most pleasant and friendly of anywhere on the island. I can’t speak for the front desk (my dealings with them amounted to about 30 seconds total to pick-up and drop-off the keys), but everyone else was really great. Eddie, from pool and beach staff, stole our hearts. The hardest worker I have EVER seen and with such a good story. He really was amazing – he looked out for every guest and always stayed on top of things. We also went out on the Hobie with him. Great guy, I think all the guests really appreciate him. Elsewhere on the island, our experience with the people was a bit different. I’ve been to 13 other islands and the people here seem the most indifferent and uninviting of anywhere. They weren’t necessary unfriendly, but not entirely pleasant. There were some exceptions but that’s the feeling I came away with in general. Either way, there are plenty of staff at RWI to flash you a smile, a pleasant greeting or engage in good conversation.

The Condo: Comfortable. Homey. Wonderful. We very much enjoyed Priscilla’s unit and it exceeded our expectations. The furnishings were beautiful, the décor was pleasant and it was very spacious. The bathroom and kitchen were both very nice, very clean and well maintained. We cook about 80% of our meals in the condo, and the kitchen had all the necessities and more! The bedroom was just charming with the nice, big windows and wonderful shutters. It was very well furnished and the bed was super big and comfortable. We really enjoyed meals and cards out on the deck in the evenings. The unit had plenty of storage, towels and extras, including a great washer/dryer set. The air conditioning worked very well (and there were vents in every room) and it was also nice to have the ceiling fans. You can see a tiny sliver of ocean from the deck but it’s not worth noting. The location of the unit within the resort was also ideal – right in the middle of both pool areas, and halfway between the beach and parking lot. We really felt right at home here and were more than happy with our choice.

The Owner: Helpful. Honest. Professional. Priscilla was great from start to finish. She was very professional, but personable, and responded quickly to emails/requests. She is definitely a very involved owner who takes pride in her unit and reputation. Her condo was represented honestly in the description and pictures. It’s owners like Priscilla that make HomeAway and VRBO so successful. Thank you for sharing your slice of heaven, Priscilla!

In conclusion, don’t think twice (or pay twice, for that matter) – stay here!!

Room Tip: Don't book through the hotel - book direct with an owner!

The Royal West Indies is a great hotel! It does not have the same "party" atmosphere as some of the other resorts, so it's great for a couples getaway.

The hotel is right on the beach with chairs and umbrellas put out every day. There is a patio just over the dune so you can watch the sunset every evening. There is a wonderful restaurant and small bar right on the hotel grounds. There are two pools--one by the restaurant and a second "quiet" pool tucked away in the trees a bit. The quiet pool was great for a day we were a little sunburned but still wanted to spend time outside. We read, napped and swam all afternoon without adding to our burns!

The staff was extremely friendly--front desk, bar, wait staff, beach staff. Everybody greeted us with a huge smile and was willing to help us out in any way we asked.

The hotel has an excursion desk that can help you schedule anything from snorkeling to parasailing. You can rent kayaks, a small boat, or snorkel gear for use at the hotel for 45 minutes at a time. You can also rent bikes for 2 hours at a time, which is great to go to the store (approximately a 10 minute bike ride). The rooms are equipped with a fridge/freezer, sink, and microwave so we got a number of snacks and drinks at the store to use the whole week.

The location is wonderful--a 15 minute ride from the airport and right on the beach. There are a number of other resorts within walking distance if you want to visit other restaurants (though the hotel restaurant is so good, we stuck with that!) The beach isn't crowded and the water is warm, clear and doesn't keep deep too quickly so you can swim out quite a ways! We recommend staying in building 1 or 2 since those are the closest to the beach.

We loved this resort and would certainly go back!

Room Tip: Building 1 or 2 is best--they are closest to the beach.

My husband and myself chose Provo for our vacation in May. This was our second trip to the Turks after 10 years. We are seasoned travelers and traveled extensively to almost all the Carribben islands and Europe and have never stayed in less than a 4 Star hotel. The RWI was fine for couples as well as families. The grounds are nice, although small. There is no game room, playground or exercise room for the quests. If you are accustomed to a FOUR STAR HOTEL- YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED. The hotel left a little to be desired. As all the other reviews state, do not reserve a oceanview room at this hotel, for it is the same view as the garden suite. It is located very close to Club Med and you can hear the music and loudspeaker. We requested a room on an upper floor, non-smoking when we made our reservations thourgh our agent. Our agent called twice the day of check in to confirm it. When we arrived we were given an room on the first floor. We produced a reservation with our request and were told it would be taken care of the following day since the manager was not in. Unfortunatley, the room smelled of mold, dampness and cigarettes, was outdated, the bathroom light was out, the water did not go down in the bathtub and the bathtub faucet was in need of repair. Needless to day, we were up all night and ready to check out . The following day, the Manager was kind enough to change our room and personally showed it to us herself. She was quite lovely. Therefore, we had to spend the entire second day on the premises until our room was changed. The second room was in much better condition, had a lovely view and was on the third floor. Thank goodness. There were small ants in the kitchen and bathroom which I did not see until our last days there. The kitchen was well equipped, washer and dryer and room was nicely appointed. The RWI is a timeshare so it does meet the standard of a hotel or hotel chain since the upkeep is dependent upon maintainance and membership fees of the timeshare ownerns .The restaurant on the premises was very good. It had a large selection, and attentive service. We were not disappointed at all. Shopping is nearby and you can bicycle or walk to the food market. We chose to walk over and taxi back since our purchase included heavy items (water, wine, watermelon).
Sunsets were magnificent, the beach accessible and beautiful and we went on a fantastik snorkeling trip which included conch salad, a visit to a deserted island and a great skipper The coral and fish were amazing and the highlight of this vacation.
I certainly would not return to this hotel. They do not have a printer with their computer, so it is impossible to print out a boarding pass for depature. As a matter of fact, I doubt I would return to the Turks due to the problems we encountered at the airport upon departure which included delays, overcrowding, unavailabe seats at the airport and a poor public address system.
This is the first time I have ever had anything negative to say about a hotel we have frequented. We would certainly consider spending more at an upscale hotel in the future.
