“Top notch choice on Grace Bay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2012

My husband and I recently returned from a 4 night stay at The Sands. The resort was top notch, and our vacation was relaxing and beautiful -- just what the doctor ordered. Here is a point-by-point review of our experience at The Sands:

Location: Perfect. 10 minute ride from the airport. Right on Grace Bay.

Beach: Soft, gorgeous white sand, clear turquoise water, private palapa trees and lounge chairs for resort guests

Resort: The resort has a lush, tropical vibe. The landscaping is divine. We especially like the way that their pool is arranged. There is a traditional main pool right near the ocean (with lounge chairs circled all around it), but then there is a long and winding pool that ebbs and flows throughout the property. At each bend, there are private alcoves for 4 or 5 lounge chairs, and shady areas to privately take a dip in the water and then read a book. Occassional waterfalls meant the water was always flowing, never stagnant, and the unusual design of the pool gave the whole resort an intimate/never crowded/alive feeling.

Accommodations: We purchased one of the cheaper rooms at the resort, and it was --- wonderful! It was more like a mini-suite than a hotel room. It had a separate bedroom, living room with kitchenette, and bathroom. And even though we didn't have a private deck, there was a table and two chairs outside our room on the shared balcony overlooking the pool. The kitchenette came in handy -- we were able to buy groceries on the island and save money on breakfast and lunch (...so we could splurge on dinner + dessert!).

Amenities: We used a number of their amenities. Our favorites were (1) Bikes - made it easy to go to town and get an ice cream, go shopping, or stock up on groceries. These were free to use. (2) Hobbie cats - top quality mini catamarans that really moved fast! The resort allowed you to take them out yourself, or they would send someone with you for a private ride (free of charge) if you wanted. (3) Coconut Grove - They had a series of hammocks in a shady grove, where you could retreat if the sun was too much. The fresh breeze made this a welcome spot, and the rich tropical landscaping made each hammock feel a world away.

Service: A+. We felt like kings. The folks at The Sands were unusually kind, patient, and thoughtful. Service must be one of their core values.

Timing: May is technically shoulder season, but it was really a great time. The weather was good (86 during the day, 75 at night, mostly sunny but a few overcast hours here and there which were frankly a relief from the sun). The best part was that the resort and the whole town seemed to be at only 40 or 50% capacity. We were able to get any reservation we want, and always got a plum table. At the beach and the pool, we always were able to get a lounge chair. It was perfect!

I would highly suggest The Sands, and my husband & I both agree that we'd be happy to return in the future.

Room Tip: From May - Dec, it seems they are having a "buy 3 nights, get one free" promotion. This is...

OUr family loves the Sands. The place is so clean, friendly, and laid back. We spent 7 nights with our two kids, 3 & 5 and we had a fabulous experience. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, the kitchen works out great with the kids, and having a washer and dryer just makes life so easy.
The pool and the beach are very kid friendly, and even that there are not many kids there, no one seems to mind them at all. The staff is SO NICE! They always say hello and are available to help in any way.

The location on the beach can't be beat. The water is clean, the sand is soft, and the view is spectacular. They give you fresh towels, an umbrella, and feel free to order up drinks from Hemmingways, they are delicious.

Helpful hints that we remembered from last time, we brought dishwash & detergent packets to make life easier. Less expensive and less to carry back from the grocery store. We did forget bug spray, which would have been helpful when going out at night. Especially to the restaurants, because we ate outdoors the entire vacation.

My family can't wait to go back next year!

Room Tip: We prefer ocean view-- it is wonderful!

We got married here on 4/20/12 and couldn't have been happier with the resort! We had about 45 guests also stay at the Sands and everyone had a blast. The rooms with kitchens are great to make your breakfast and some lunches. The staff at Hemmingways was incredible for the whole week and during our reception which we had on the deck. They also have a great beach scene. Can't wait to go back!

My wife and I have just returned from 6 nights at the Sands at Grace Bay. The resort is small and itimate and beautiful. Not a lot of rooms and thousands of people, this is nice part of Provo, not a lot of big resorts. We had a ground flow room in builiding 5 (5101). It was a 1 king bedroom with full kitchen, dining room, washer and dryer and sitting area/living room and a wonderful screened in porch. It was heaven. It sits on the best beach in the world. It has a wonderful garden area with the pool and whirlpool, a larger pool closer to the beach, Hemingways restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and supper. The resort is easy walk to other restaurants and shops and the Gourmet IGA is not far. We rented a car so we could explore the island so we also did some grocery shopping. Beware, food and drink are expensive here. A beer and a strawberry daiquiri cost us $22 with tip. We ate all breakfasts in our room, we did the same for lunch and we ate out for 3 suppers that averaged around $90.00 per outing. We also visited / site inspection some other resorts in the area - Ocean Club and Ocean Club West, Beaches and the Villa del Mar. Also beach walking you got to see other resorts as you were walking. It is a glorious island, people are very friendly, they drive on the wrong side of he road but that is OK. Just becareful to keep to the left.

Room Tip: An ocean view would be nice, but our room was close to whirlpool as well as where we parked our car...

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and we were both extremely pleased with the Sands. The rooms were neat and clean, great customer service, and the beach was secluded. The greatest attribute of The Sands is their restaurant: Hemingways. Hemingways is a casual, relaxing, quiet environment- great for eating lunch and overlooking the beach. When we go back to the Turks and Caicos Islands, we will definitely be staying there again. Couldn't be happier with our experience here.

My husband and I have vacationed at the Sands at least 7 times and have already booked our return trip for next year. The beach is fabulous, the water incredible, seaside dining at
Hemmingway's heavenly but most of all, the staff makes us feel like family. A reasonable
walk down the beach affords worthwhile snorkeling at Coral Gables. We love taking the Hobi
out and so appreciate that the Sands offers this as part of our stay. While the rooms are not
luxurious, they are clean and comfortable with the kitchen allowing the choice to dine in or out.
We enjoy the splurge of an Ocean-View room but the Garden View rooms are a good value if
you don't need the view 24/7.

Room Tip: If you need to save a little $$, get a Garden View...still lovely!

Like many of you reading this, I did my homework when booking our trip to Provo. I picked the Sands based on many reviews, of many resorts. We had a lovely stay. We were in a studio ocean view, Room 2302. We could definitely see the ocean and it was great to be on the 3rd floor. We had a kitchette with a small fridge, microwave, toaster, and full settings for 2-including a wine opener!

Be prepared-Turks and Caicos is very expensive. Dinner at a moderate restaurant will run you $70. We did eat at Hemingways on our first night. It ran us about $125 for the 2 of us with 2 alcoholic beverages. I will say that the meal was delicious! We had breakfast in the room almost every morning and lunch a couple of days. We rented a car so we went to the IGA almost every day. There are actually 2 IGAs, one called gourmet and the other a more traditional grocery store. Both were fine. More selection at the traditional IGA. Be prepared for expensive groceries! Each store has a great selection of wine and beer. Both are very expensive but beer is VERY expensive. $19.99 for a six pack of corona.

The beach and water are amazing. We walked a mile and a half in both directions. The sands has more than enough umbrellas. Drink service was nice too. Lots of families with small children but NOTHING compared to Beaches. Just take a walk down the beach for some perspective.

We did have one complaint. Next to our room they were drilling into the cement and replacing a metal door frame. (couldn't even hear each other talk) When we asked the front staff how long this was going to go on we waited 30 minutes with no call back from the manager so my husband went to the front desk. They denied work going on in our building so my husband took a picture of the men working and took it to the front desk. They offered to move us but the work was pretty much done that day so no move needed. Just didn't like the fact that they didn't believe us.

Overall a great trip and we would stay at the Sands again. The property is beautiful and the people of Provo are very nice. Rent a car. Driving on the left is no big deal and we got to see so much of the island and felt safe doing it.
