We had stayed at The Somerset a year ago and what a difference a year makes! The resort has new management and it shows. The grounds look beautiful, the units are clean and in much better condition. The new manager was outside talking to guests, watching the staff and making sure everything was perfect. The staff was friendly, attentive and jumped to help when we needed anything. We ordered groceries to our villa before arrival and they delivered it to the refrigerator as we checked in - great feature!
The Somerset garden villas include all the features of a hotel resort, but each unit is like your own private home. We stayed in a garden villa because we wanted peace and quiet. The garden villas are a one minute walk to the beach and pool but because they are a minute walk away, they are more secluded and quiet.
The kitchens are large with all high end Viking appliances. The Kitchen Aid blender (and ice machine) was used multiple times a day for the kids virgin piña colada drinks! We ate at many of the surrounding restaurants - all walking distance from The Someset and also made a few meals in the villa. It was nice to have that option - especially with 4 kids. We had 4 teen girls with us - 2 of our own and 2 of their friends and they had a fabulous time. They learned how to use the paddle boards, took out the kayaks, used the snorkel and fins and went sailing with me on the Hobe sailboats. Being an avid sailor, the constant wind on Grace Bay is fantastic. All beach equipment use is free - unlike at other resorts. The girls went parasailing (outside vendor from the resort) and we all did a snorkle trip and tried snuba (great fun). We didn't rent a car but friends did and said that once they managed to remember to drive on the other side of the road, it was fine. They said they didn't use the car very much and we found that taking a taxi for the one or two times we needed one was sufficient. We rented bicycles and rode around. The island is pretty flat so a standard bicycle is sufficient.
The beach was as gorgeous as we had rembered and we spent many hours lounging by the pool. Even though we were there Presidents week and the resort was full, there were plenty of chairs and umbrellas and you didn't have to get up early to "reserve" one like at more crowded resorts.
It is a safe area and we had no problem letting the girls walk on the beach to other resorts and visit friends of theirs staying elsewhere. Two of the families came to visit and remarked how beautiful the Somerset was and how our villa was like a private home. Our villa was HUGE - 2700 sq feet with a porch and a balcony and was very tastefullly decorated and comfortable. iIt easily accommodated all of us very nicely.
Service was a bit slow at the pool bar and we were told it was owned by a third party and not the resort. We heard the resort is trying to get them to improve the service. They had a very nice Tuesday night Caribbean night bar-b-que on the beach. We ate dinner and had a few drinks and left the kids to hang out. They stayed late dancing at the bonfire to the DJ spinning tunes. They said it was a lot of fun. The kids had wished they had the bar-b-que a few more nights during the week as they are not into stuffy restaurants with 3 course meals.
We heard that the Somerset has added massage and spa services although we didn't use it during our stay. We saw young kids in their new kid club and the lady taking care of them was doing an amazing job.
The internet was spotty - but we were told a new antenna is being installed and they will soon have movies on demand. That will be a big hit with our teens!
The weather was about 80 degrees each day and we only had a 5 minute rain one afternoon.
With a 3 hour direct flight from NY, it makes this an easy destination.
We will definitely be back.

We stayed at the Somerset Resort March 9-16, 2012.......although we booked only a room, we upgraded to a 1 bedroom and loft for more space and amenities. The suite was very spacious and well appointed, all the latest appliances in the full kitchen. A BBQ was just outside, we used it twice. The Somerset grounds are very well maintained, flower beds everywhere. The pools were the best, right from the lap pool to the infinity edge pool.

The staff is very friendly, welcoming and strives to provide great service. The beach on Grace Bay is absolutely fantastic, it is the place to hang out and relax. The rea is well maintained by the staff and there are kayaks, Hobie Cats and other equiptment available.

We did have the continental breakfast several times and it was a delic ious way to start the day although it would not keep you going for the day. We also cooked several times in our suite, both breakfasts, lunch and dinners.

All in all, a great place to stay, our daughter is already syaing that she wants to come back to the Someset and stay in the exact same suite. That pretty much is a good recommendation in itself. Enjoy!

Room Tip: There are garden view, pool and ocean view suites, according to your preference and price range.

First trip to Turks and we will be back... though I'm not sure we will go back to Somerset. I'm on the fence because this really is a BEAUTIFUL property. Rooms are large and incredibly clean (great maid service). The beach is perfect -- clean, not crowded at all (no problem finding chairs any time of day) and lots of free water activities. Overall we loved this property. The problem we found was with the service.

We enjoyed the fact that the staff leaves you alone for the most part -- they are very hands off. But we expected better service when we needed them. Upon check-in we weren't given any maps or info. Our room didn't have a resort book -- even though upon arrival, we were greeted with a letter that specifically referenced the book. We asked the concierge for one, who said we'd have it on the next day but it never came. We left not knowing what the hotel even had to offer... could we order room service? what were the tv channels? what else was available?

The beach activity guy should be noted as he was very helpful but the pool bar/rest was very slow for service on the beach. One day we ordered two drinks which arrived 45 mins apart. Who delivers one drink to a couple and leaves the next for 45 mins? We had a good laugh but baffling.

The rotating staff at concierge were very nice, but no one seemed at all qualified to help with our questions. We asked for a restaurant recommendation and if they could book the dinner reservation for us, but when we called back to confirm, we found it never happened.

Our biggest disappointment was when we went in person talk to the concierge about a trip to Smith's reef. We were told you needed to arrange for a boat to take you out to the reef. 30 mins there and back. I thought I had read otherwise and now after reading TripAdvisor reviews again find that it's right off the beach!!! A bit of a walk, but no boat needed.

Other things to note... do not count on Wifi. On the days it worked, it was slower than dialup. We didn't mind at all (we gave up) but worth noting if you plan to use it. Also not easy walking distance to town, but very convenient to bay bistro or mango reef for a beachfront breakfast. Not a bad walk to to the coral garden's reef for snorkelling off the beach.

Overall, it's disappointing because we loved this resort and had an amazing time. The staff is very polite and friendly but we left feeling like we should have been treated better and that we probably missed out on a lot. It's the same beautiful beach all along Grace Bay so if we return, Somerset will still be in the running, but will likely consider Palms or others.

We are still on property enjoying another perfect stay.
Spent the first half of our vacation at another upscale property and then moved here for 5 nights.
Very nice suites with every amenity provided that you might require.
We enjoy the English Cottages (Garden Villas) as they provide more than enough space with a fully equiped Viking kitchen, two full baths and a loft.
The suites are all individually decorated and you feel as if you are in a home rather than a hotel property.
Very friendly staff, beautiful beach front, pools and stunning architecture.
Great service...but not over the top....which we find the perfect mix.
Will definately return as it is the most relaxing vacation property that we have visited.

First trip to T&C and had a wonderful time. Stayed at the Somerset in the second floor of the building right on the beach on the left hand side (when facing the beach). I believe the buildings "name" is Dundee.

Spectacular view, wonderful beach, staff was very helpful and informative. We only had drinks and lunch at the resort and ventured out each night to varied restaurants.

We were there in late April so it was past the prime season. We'd walk the beach in the morning (great beach you can walk for an hour in either direction), then relax at the pool or on the beach itself after the walk. We used their Hobie Cat two or three of the days when the wind was calm and it's a wonderful experience. Great place to learn if you've never sailed anything before.

We had a rental car, so we frequented the two very well stocked markets within 2 miles of the resort. Plenty of shopping, and window browsing to be had.

Had good dinners at the local establishments (Conch Shack), bars at the Marina, bars on the beach and wonderful restaurants that I would rate 4 star back in the states. Nothing is cheap but it makes you appreciate the views.

We took a snorkeling tour from right outside the Somerset. They pick you up a couple hundred yards away, take you out to a couple different spots snorkeling, looking for Conch, making a decent lunch, plenty of run punch and beautiful sandollar beaches then drop you back off near the Somerset late afternoon.

Best dinner was actually had on the beach, featured by the Somerset. A guitar player who does the circuit of all the top resorts was singing that evening. Great entertainer. If you golf, bring your golf clubs and he'll "host" you at his country club on the island the next day. I think he golfs every day and sings every night. Why am I working a day job again???????

Careful driving, it's a British Territory so it's on the opposite side we are used to in the states. And the round-abouts (rotary's) are much smaller than what I'm use to in the states or in Europe.

Enjoy your travels. Carpe Diem.
