But We Had An Exceptional View

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 26, 2024
Way past it's prime but the room was serviceable, with fridge and microwave and a little sitting balcony for morning coffee, evening rum drinks and a postcard view. We found the staff very friendly and helpful. If you can book room 310 you'll love it.

Positives: 1) Location - This hotel, located on Protestant Cay, is quiet because it is accessed by a water ferry. It has the best white sand beach in Christiansted, which brings us back year after year. 2)Staff - The hotel staff were welcoming to make our stay enjoyable; the housekeepers did a good job in servicing our room every other day. There was an attendant working the beach to help with cabanas and umbrellas.
3)Landscaping - The tropical vegetation provides habitat for birds and lizards.

Negatives: 1)Accessibility - There is no elevator, which caused some to grumble when climbing three flights of stairs to reach their rooms. Some guests needed help climbing into and out of the water taxi. This hotel is not a good choice for those with mobility issues. 2) Common hotel amenities were lacking. Telephones had been removed from the rooms. No functioning ice machines. The lobby public computer, used to print boarding passes in the past, had been removed. There was no access to food, not even a continental breakfast, in the morning. The rooms did have coffee machines. The bathroom faucet was plugged.

Room tip: The hotel pool has been closed for some time.

Read the reviews! The place is hurting. The staff know this and they too wish the renovations had started. They would offer more if they could. They are kind and accommodating. I hope for all that the hotel and bar get the upgrade this location deserves.
You walk steps to the beach. STEPS to a beautiful beach and view of the sea. Easy to get to the boardwalk on the boat which goes back and forth constantly.

Booked a 3 night stay at Hotel on the Cay and encountered several issues
-I was told one of the keys for the room was missing, with no indication of where they are. Was told we’d be contacted “if it was found” but we never were
-Wi-Fi wasn’t working in the room, and the hotel is very dated (this wasn’t as much of an issue given the affordability)
-For a 3 night stay there was no housekeeping, this means no fresh towels, no bed making, and more importantly, no trash was removed from the rooms, on the last evening before I left early I had to call the front desk, bag the trash myself without any gloves and give it to the front desk person. When I shared this with the hotel I was told that the housekeeping staff spoke to us and we aksed them to come back, this is not true. We never spoke to the front desk staff.
-And finally on the last night after returning to the hotel, seeing the state of the room, bagging the trash and going to wash my hands, I find out there is NO WATER. There was no notification, no information on when the situation would improve, eventually I was told it was back on but it wasn’t, and within an hour or two, when it was still off with no clear information, I had to check out early.
Since then I have spoken to the hotel and they agreed to refund the last night I did not stay. This is not a concession, since I did not stay, they simply refunded a service that was not used. It does not make up for the numerous issues experience, with that said, I still offer two stars for the affordability and of course the location is great.

You can rent little sun shelters and chaise lounges and sit and watch the world go by. Plus, two ferry rides for only $5! If you are lucky, Tara will be tending bar and the BBQ walk-up will be open. Best snorkeling is off the southern end of the cay.

After a miserable spring, in 2022 and the residual effects of Covid restrictions, I was looking for a good vacation preferably in the Caribbean. I chose St Croix because it is a US territory and had no restrictions for coming in and going out to the island from the main land. Through RCI, I was able to book the Hotel on the Cay for July 4 week in 2022. (4th of July was celebrated as in the US on the island). In addition, the one apartment was available that week to reserve and we got it for our part of our family with children.

The island was significantly damaged because of the two hurricanes in 2017 and St. Croix has worked hard to recover and renovate. With that said, some of the features of the resort were not functioning, such as the swimming pool, and the terraced landscaping pools.

We loved the location of this resort because of its proximity to the boardwalk in Christiansted, and all it’s restaurants and stores. Taking the ferry shuttle back-and-forth to the Cay was an added fun experience. It ran 24/7 and the drivers couldn’t have been better.

The outdoor barbecue and entertainment on Tuesday was perfect, especially with such a setting on the beach under the stars.
The staff at the resort was helpful and amenable. The beach is considered one of the best in the entire island and I would say that’s probably pretty close to true. The water is great. It feels like a large outdoor saltwater swimming pool … calm, clear and clean with fish swimming around at your feet.

It’s not the Ritz, but if you want a relaxing and laid-back holiday with your family, this could be a real gem for you.

Room tip: Parking is available on the street behind the King Christian Hotel around and near the fort.
