“Lovely Island Oasis”
Reviewed 9 January 2012

My husband and I stayed at Gallows Point for a week. We were in a top-floor suite with views of the water and St. Thomas. The sunset at Gallows Point is one of the best on the island. The accommodations were lovely - roomy, modern, cozy. The bed was very comfortable, and the kitchen was well-equipped and easy to cook breakfast in. Gallows Point is just up a small hill from Cruz Bay, and you can easily walk to Cruz Bay to shop, eat, etc. As far as we can tell, the only downside to the resort is the noise at night. The restaurant on premises, Zozo's (it's fabulous, by the way), is located on the second floor of a building with a rooftop bar. The noise from the restaurant and bar, which seems to be open until 10:30pm, carries right into the suites. Almost every night, we heard loud talking (which picked up in volume as the night went on) until 10:30pm. We realize this may not be a big deal for most, but we're more early to bed and up early people. Additionally, the noise from the town wafts up to Gallows Point. Most nights, I went to sleep with the sounds of a bass line thumping. If you're a late to bed person, this is probably no big deal at all. Everything else was fantastic, and we realize this is out of the resort's control.

My wife and I just spent 8 nights at Gallows Point in early December, 2011. After staying in a lower ocean unit in November 2010 (1B, which was nice but not yet renovated), we decided to upgrate to an upper ocean unit on this visit (2D). The renovated unit was beautiful, clean and nicely appointed. Also had an incredible view of St. Thomas, and a nice palm tree right in front of our balcony. The resort is impeccable, the grounds beautiful and well kept, and the location is ideal (a short walk down the hill into Cruz Bay for dining, shopping and drinking, and not having to worry about driving into town and parking). Also convenient to have Zozo's on the premises (our favorite restaurant on St. John).
Also very much appreciate the service, including Brenda, Linda and Valerie at Everyting, as well as everyone at the front desk (especially Ms. Anna, who was so sweet and we really enjoyed talking with her through the week).
Ideal resort for couples looking to relax and get away from crowds and kids (there were no kids while we were there). Lastly, some of the best snorkeling we did on St. John this year was right in front of Gallows Point (and worth the swim to snorkel to the left into Frank Bay where we saw a spotted eel, a nurse shark, and loads of fish and coral). The snorkeling in our opinion ranked up there with Salt Pond Bay, Francis Bay and Waterlemon Cay.
Can't wait to get back to St. John and Gallows Point!

We rented unit 8C through suite st John at gallows point resort and it was simply a piece of heaven! The view, the resort, the proximity to the town of Cruz bay, the full kitchen, and of course, the breathtaking sunsets made for a magical stay. We comfortably slept a family of 5 with 3 girls aged 12-18 in our 1 bedroom loft suite and started every day with a snorkel swim right out our backyard. And booking through the Matheny family who owns suite st John was a pleasure! All in all, this condo resort is a jewel on st John!

Gorgeous buildings and grounds. Fabulous views and sounds of the sea. Very pleasant, knowledgeable staff. We had unit 3D and found it to be spotless, nicely decorated, and in top condition. This was our second stay and will not be our last. Easy walk to town is a huge plus, as it gives you lots of options for activities, shopping, and restaurants. Probably the best snorkeling right there on property.

Would not change a thing! Would stay here again without hesitation.

Room Tip: We loved 3D. Closest to the water (of course they are all super close).

Very nicely designed condos. Grounds nicely landscaped. Staff was very helpful with any difficulties. Very convenient walk to Cruz Bay. There's not much of a beach, but they usually warn you about that. My only serious gripe was that they quoted me one price when I made the booking. I wrote it down, as did the friend I was travelling with. I was sent a confirmation email, but didn't double check the price on the email until later. It was significantly higher than what they had quoted me. I take resposibility for not having checked right-away, but it was definitely a different price. By then it was too late to change. On the bright side, it was still less than Caneel Bay and people who have stayed at both have actually told me that Gallows point is nicer. I would also suggest getting the second floor rooms. They have great views and the first floor "Ocean Front" rooms aren't really all ocean front.

We stayed in 8A, a lower-level Oceanview unit for a week.
- Beautiful view of the ocean / steps away from snorkeling, which is very good at the resort. We also snorkeled at Trunk Bay, Hawksnest, Honeymoon/Salomon Bay, and also in St. Thomas and we thought the snorkeling was best at Gallows Point. I don't think you can get a better snorkeling experience unless you rent a car and drive further out, or take a boat trip out somewhere. Do recommend renting a jeep for at least a day. We relied on taxis but it's inconvienent to go further than the popular beaches closer to Cruz Bay.
- Unit is well furnished. Sounds like most units have been renovated lately. Kitchen is very nice. We cooked most breakfast and some lunch. Food is expensive and dining option is somewhat limited given the size of the island. We took advantage of the nice amenities. Bathroom was huge and bedroom was also nice. TVs in both the living room and the bedroom. Also had a DVD player and radio/IPOD dock.
- We booked oceanview because we read some prior TA reviews about noise levels if you stay in the Harborview rooms. We only heard some music from the Beach Bar nearby on one night, and you will hear some noise during the day from the ferry/ships docking at Cruz bay. View is also beautiful so you can't go wrong with Harborview or Oceanview.
- Very quiet/intimate settings. No kids. A great place for couples.
- Location is great. Very close to cruz bay/close to ferry and all of the restaurants/bars. It's less than a 5 minute walk.
- Restaurants : Fishtrap, LimeInn had decent seafood. Liked the Beach Bar - good bar food and friendly atmosphere. Uncle Joe's BBQ is a good place to take-out chicken/ribs. We didn't get to try ZoZo's, which is the restaurant at Gallows Point. It is a bit more expensive, but the place was packed every night we were there.
- We definitely would return to Gallows Point. You can also check out the Westin, if you want the big resort experience and have kids. Caneel Bay is also very nice, but more expensive.

Room Tip: Lower number units are further away from the harbor, so it's quieter.

We booked unit 9A with the owner Richard with his company Suite St John. He has recently remodeled the unit with all new kitchen & bathroom (new granite countertops, cooktop, refrigerator, dishwasher, sinks); all new furniture in the living room, dining room & bedroom. Beautiful local artist paintings throughout. We loved unit 9A (patio, ground level). We watched humming birds, doves, rooster (very colorful) and hens. Mask, the cat, made our acquaintance almost immediately upon arriving (he probably new we had 2 kitties at home). Gallows Point is the perfect location if you don't feel comfortable driving on the left side of the road (which we didn't). The Everyting shop can call a taxi for you to meet you at the resort to take you to the many wonderful beaches or take a tour of the island. It is a 5 minute walk to town to browse shops, restaurants, catch the ferry to other Virgin Island locations (St Thomas USVI, Tortola BVI, Virgin Gorda BVI). One day, we took the ferry to St Thomas and enjoyed shopping at Charlotte Amelia and another day we took the ferry to Tortola (not much there, not even shopping). Both times we could not wait to get back to the peace and quiet of St John. If you do a little homework about the island St John, you will soon realize that there are very warm & friendly people who live here. You will do very well if you remember to say "Good morning (good afternoon, good evening), how are you? before anything else. Wish we had this custom at home. We really enjoyed the High Tide restaurant--the best Blackened Maui (Yum), huge & delicious hamburger--hubby enjoyed the conch fitters as well as the conch soup. The Grotto Deli at Mongoose Junction had a great & delicious menu. Well, I hope you decide to stay at Gallows Point--you will love it!

We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay at Gallows Point Resort. We are glad you enjoyed the renovations in 9A. We want all to know that we now have over 75% of our units renovated. They are gorgeous. Unlike many hotels with "cookie cutter" rooms where you cannot tell one from the other, at Gallows Point Resort each unit is unique. We look forward to you coming back to stay with us again.
