You have to hike a bit to get out here and the snorkeling is a little more exposed. We ventured quite a ways out and getting in was a bit tiring. I thought it was really cool. I would recommend for experienced snorkelers only.

During our visit this time we passed several locals totting large buckets of salt (gathered from the far side of the bay). Some times we pass donkeys as well. We usually swim out along the left shore to the end then cross over by a small rock formation to the right side and swim back. Saw several nurse sharks, stingrays, seaworms, sea spiders, squid, lots of variety of fish and an eel. Not crowded at all.

We were staying in Coral Bay and this beach was less than 1/2 a mile from us. We checked it out and the beach was beautiful with crystal clear water. We went back and snorkeled and there were sea turtles, angel fish, jelly fish and many others. It was a quiet uncrowded beach. We loved it.

You'll walk a little ways to get from the parking area (or bus stop) to Salt Pond Bay. (Yes, you can take public bus to Salt Pond stop). Salt Pond Bay beach was beautiful with lovely multi hued blue water, nice sand, and super views - like so many of the St. John beaches. But this beach is very unique because of two more very different environments that are only a short walk from Salt Pond Bay.
* Salt Pond is a land locked pond that gets its sea water coming up through the ground because it is a low spot on the island. When the seawater evaporates, a sea salt deposit is often visible around the edge of the pond. We had hoped to collect a bit of salt but some recent rains had dissolved the salt back into the pond. Perhaps you can get some salt. You'll see the flora is different and interesting here too.
* Drunk Bay is only 5 or 10 minutes beyond the end of Salt Pond but a totally different feel than other bays you've seen on St. John. The waves were bigger, the water was full of white caps and the wind blew briskly. Currents just off shore were very strong. Not a place to swim but beautiful to look at. Many artistic efforts by people made from coral and stone adorn the rocky shoreline. Most have probably been here for many years.
Be sure to enjoy Salt Pond and Drunk Bay when you visit Salt Pond Bay.
