“Best Unit #1602 at Coral Beach Condos Freeport Bahamas”
Reviewed 18 September 2009

Our stay at Coral Beach Condos in Freeport Bahamas was FABULOUS. We had Unit #1602, owned by Steve Pierce. (VRBO Listing 196776). You can find the condo at www.vrbo.com/196776. This was the best vacation condos I’ve ever rented. The owner was very friendly, timely and provided lots of helpful information about our stay.

The Condo: this was a completely renovated, well kept and clean unit. The place was nicely furnished, (leather living room set), modern furniture, marble tiled floors and beautiful artwork throughout. There was a Plasma TV with video library and games, free internet in the living room. The bedroom had a large walk in closet, 2 queen beds with plush comforters and Egyptian linen. Bathroom was great because it had double vanities and dressing area separate from the toilet and shower area. There was a balcony that faced the ocean which we loved to sit on and have drinks or coffee in the morning while watching the sunrise. We did not need anything at all as the owner had provided everything you would have at home. The kitchen was fully equipped – coffee pot, toaster oven, microwave, icemaker, pots & pans, bakeware, silverware, utensils. It was great having lots of extra towels, linen and any cleaning supplies we needed during the stay. Some extras we thought were nice were having coolers, beach chairs for kids, and even an umbrella. I have to say that this owner really thought about vacationers’ needs ahead of time. We felt spoiled! We did not need a thing!!

The Beach: absolutely beautiful is all I can say. There was only one day when the surf was somewhat rough and there was a lot of seaweed that washed up as a result. Otherwise, the water was very calm, warm as bath water and crystal clear. A couple days I could see fish swimming below. At 6 a.m. there was the occasional person out for a walk or run but it was pretty secluded the rest of the day. Beach chairs were chained down and if you wanted one there was a $3.00 charge. This was no big deal because we stayed in the water and did not need chairs.
The Pool: there is no lifeguard on duty, we only ran into a couple families laying by the pool but again, very quite and secluded. We did find some residue in the pool that could have been cleaned out but it was not a big deal to us. There are lots of lounge chairs and tables to use. The pool bar was not open and they were working on it daily. This was also not a big deal either because we went to Port Lucaya for drinks or had them in the condo.

Laundry Facilities: there were washers on each floor of the building and all were functional. To save time we put a load on each floor all at once. The cost for one load is $1.50 – tokens only. The first floor washer room was a bit scary looking though and we did not go back in there to use the machines.

Grounds/Building: were kept clean and the landscaping and plants were so beautiful. Lots of small lizards so watch out if you are afraid. They are everywhere in the Bahamas. They did not bother me though. Again, the place has a lot of work being done on it both inside and out. The lobby is decorated nicely but no A/C in the lobby or elevators.

Staff: all were friendly and greeted us with a smile. We had no problems with personalities. Locals were just as warm and friendly. There is a security guard on staff all day and night which made us feel quite safe.
Fitness Center: there is a fitness center on the grounds near the pool that is open at 5:30-12 and 4-7. They charge $7.00/day for hotel guests. It was very outdated but served its purpose.

Activities: Port Lucaya is about 20 minutes walk from this condo You can find many activities there - restaurants, bars, concerts at night time, boating, sailing, fishing, snorkeling and other water sports can be found here. The International Bazaar is not as popular as it had been and not many stalls are open. There is an open air market near the Winn Dixie that has produce, straw products and other sourveniers to bring back. We enjoyed that.

Restaurants: Steve referred us to the Bikini Bottom – a beachfront bar and grill that had a fabulous view of the beautiful ocean, outdoor and indoor seating, swings and a play area for kids. The food was pretty good at lunch time. We also ate twice at Zorba’s in Port Lucaya and had fast service, inexpensive meals, with good sized portions. They had a wide variety of foods to select. I highly recommend La Mediterranean in Port Lucaya. There breakfast was great and so was the service. Locals eat things like stewed fish, sardines or tuna with grits, Johnny cake, stewed conch. You can ask around for places with this sort of stuff but Pepper Pot is good (small, not so fast but food worth the wait)

Rental cars: We used Brad’s at the FPO airport and got decent rates and great service. Make sure to fill up before returning the car or you will get charged an additional $10 (plus cost of gas).

Bus service is about a block’s walk away. Cost is $1.00 and bus runs regularly up until sunset. There is also taxi service but is quite expensive. You can call a taxi or pick one up at Port Lucaya, the International Bazaar or any shopping center.

Overall, we enjoyed our vacation tremendously and will return again next year for 2 weeks. We hope to use Steve Pierce’s condo again. I highly recommend his condo - Unit 1602. If you reserve, you may use me as a referral - Janice Williams. Please e-mail if you have other questions. jhutchi9@jhmi.edu

I just returned from a week long stay at Coral Beach and would highly recommend it. We rented a 1 bedroom condo (Unit 1602) and it was beautifully remodeled, well equipped, and had an ocean view. I found it on VRBO and the owner was very pleasant to work with. The complex is old and the common areas/hallways are a bit depressing, but we did not spend a whole lot of time in the hallways. The pool & deck area is nice, but the bar area is still closed. There was some work being done on it while we were there, but it did not look like it was ready to open anytime soon. We bought food at the market and had no problem bringing a small cooler down to the pool/beach for our drinks and snacks. The Port Lucaya marketplace is about a 20 minute walk down the beach, but we were strongly advised not to do this walk at night. We had a rental car, which worked perfect for shuttling us back and forth to the market and restuarants, not to mention, it allowed us to really explore the island. The best thing about Coral Beach...is the beach. It is beautiful, with palapas available for shade, and an easy place to swim and float. No rocks, no jet ski noise, no hair braiding, etc.. Just peace and quiet in a stunning location. At a pretty great price considering you are steps away from the ocean.

My boyfriend is renting a 1 BR apartment at this development on the 5th floor. Much of the decor in the hallways is dated. As the hallways are not air conditioned, you can run past the bad decor to your room.

His apartment is nice: 2 double beds in the bedroom with a walk-in closet and a nice sized bathroom with two vanities (one inside the shower and toilet area and one outside by the linen closet). He has sliding doors in the living room and the bedroom, which are nice but don't provide much air circulation unless you open the hallway door.

The living room is large enough to accommodate a queen-sized sofa bed, a dinette set, an entertainment system and a small desk and chair. The kitchen has a pass through to the living room and offers a lot of storage space. I imagine other 1 BR units are comparable.

The pool is a great place to BYOB/food and either swim, relax on the lounge chairs or eat dinner and watch the pool and the ocean. Just steps away is a sugar sand beach without the commercialism of Port Lucaya.

This hotel is not convenient walking distance to Port Lucaya or to any stores but you can ride your bike within a few minutes to these locations.

I stayed in #3317 at Coral Beach and it was a lovely apt with a spectacular ocean view. The apartment was nice and clean and I had no complaints. The facilities are older, but that didn't bother me. Bob McAndrews was wonderful to work with and I would recommend staying at his apartments.

Coral Beach is within walking distance to Port Lucaya (about 15-20 min) and that was nice for an early am stroll down the beach. It was very quiet there , the staff was friendly and over all very nice place to stay. I would recommend this if you want something simple and economical.

We stayed in unit 3216 owned by Michael on the second floor of building 3. The unit was very well equipped with many extras like beach chairs, beach towels, games, Cd's, water cooler, large closet with hangers and a grill on the balcony. Veiw from the balcony is mostly of the gardens which are beaurtiful, but we could see the ocean from one end of the balcony.
Our stay was very relaxing and quiet. As someone else said it was noisy in the early morning, we did not find that to be the case at all. We slept with the sliding glass door open every night and didn't hear any noise except the ocean waves. There were no spring breakers there even though we went in March. Mostly just some families and older folks.
The beach is beautiful and was never crowded and the water is crystal clear shades of blue. Beach chairs can be rented for $3 a day, but our unit provided them. When we were there the new poolside bar was finished but not open. The pool is not heated and was very cold, but we prefer the ocean anyway.
Buses were easy to get. The bus stop is less than a block away and we never waited more than 3 or 4 minutes for one to come by. We met many interesting people from all over by riding the buses. The buses do quit running at sunset, so if you go to the MarketPlace at night , you would have to take a taxi back. There are taxis waiting any where you go to take the people back to their hotels.
The condo itself is an older building and needs some repair in places, but overall is very nice. The worse thing is the carpet in the hallways, but that didn't bother us. The lobby is bright & cheerful and we were pleasantly greeted when we arrived. When renting a unit, be sure to ask enough questions so you won't have any surprises when you arrive.
We would definitely recommend Coral Beach.

I think Coral Beach is the most incredible bargain in the Caribbean. Where else can you stay in an oceanfront complex with a gorgeous pool, tropical gardens, and 24-hour security for just $75 a night? I did give the complex as a whole just four stars for cleanliness because some of the hallways still have old carpet (it's slowly being changed to tile) that is kind of shabby, and four stars for service because when you rent from a private owner you can't really use the services of the front desk. But neither of these things bothered us at all.

We stayed in unit 1113 which is owned by Marty from Florida. It was clean and serviceable and had everything we could possibly need, from linens to coffee maker to fancy glasses for our afternoon rum punch! Even coolers for the beach. All the appliances are new and everything was in working order. I noticed a lady below complained about the green bathtub -- good Lord! You must really be looking for something to complain about when you're in paradise and you're worried about the color of a bathtub. Let me say it again: $75 a night! Oceanfront! Paradise!

The good thing about Marty's two units (1113 and 3114) is that they are ground-floor units in the front buildings with patios that go out into the courtyard. The patios really expand your living space, and it's very convenient to be able to run in and out to the pool and beach from the patio instead of lugging stuff from an upstairs floor and down the elevator.

I will continue to rent from Marty until maybe one day I can buy one of these cute units for myself. I have sent several friends and co-workers down to stay at Coral Beach and they all come home saying how much they love it. The complex is not the Ritz, but it's clean and secure and located on one of the best beaches in the world. What a bargain!

if you like noise then you will enjoy the early hour awakening you get due to the fitness center traffic that runs right next to the condo bedroom. It starts at about 5;30/6:00AM. It is complimented by the beach traffic that starts about that time as well. The condo itself was OK, but in need of renovation, especially in the bathroom. The building is older ( build about 1970) and in need of repair. There are only fire extinguishers on each floor even though there are places for fire hoses. The staff and people that I met there were nice, but I would not return to this facility. This condo is overpriced for it's condition and general location. I would not recommend this condo given the traffic noise, the condition of the building and the noise from other guests.

About 90% of the condos have also been renovated and updated and are available for rent directly from the owners. Each is unique and has its own character. There is a restaurant/beach bar located on the site serving delicious food and cocktails at very reasonable prices. Check out The Coral Reef Beach Bar on Tripadvisor.
