Our stay at Coral Beach Condos in Freeport Bahamas was FABULOUS. We had Unit #1602, owned by Steve Pierce. (VRBO Listing 196776). You can find the condo at www.vrbo.com/196776. This was the best vacation condos I’ve ever rented. The owner was very friendly, timely and provided lots of helpful information about our stay.
The Condo: this was a completely renovated, well kept and clean unit. The place was nicely furnished, (leather living room set), modern furniture, marble tiled floors and beautiful artwork throughout. There was a Plasma TV with video library and games, free internet in the living room. The bedroom had a large walk in closet, 2 queen beds with plush comforters and Egyptian linen. Bathroom was great because it had double vanities and dressing area separate from the toilet and shower area. There was a balcony that faced the ocean which we loved to sit on and have drinks or coffee in the morning while watching the sunrise. We did not need anything at all as the owner had provided everything you would have at home. The kitchen was fully equipped – coffee pot, toaster oven, microwave, icemaker, pots & pans, bakeware, silverware, utensils. It was great having lots of extra towels, linen and any cleaning supplies we needed during the stay. Some extras we thought were nice were having coolers, beach chairs for kids, and even an umbrella. I have to say that this owner really thought about vacationers’ needs ahead of time. We felt spoiled! We did not need a thing!!
The Beach: absolutely beautiful is all I can say. There was only one day when the surf was somewhat rough and there was a lot of seaweed that washed up as a result. Otherwise, the water was very calm, warm as bath water and crystal clear. A couple days I could see fish swimming below. At 6 a.m. there was the occasional person out for a walk or run but it was pretty secluded the rest of the day. Beach chairs were chained down and if you wanted one there was a $3.00 charge. This was no big deal because we stayed in the water and did not need chairs.
The Pool: there is no lifeguard on duty, we only ran into a couple families laying by the pool but again, very quite and secluded. We did find some residue in the pool that could have been cleaned out but it was not a big deal to us. There are lots of lounge chairs and tables to use. The pool bar was not open and they were working on it daily. This was also not a big deal either because we went to Port Lucaya for drinks or had them in the condo.
Laundry Facilities: there were washers on each floor of the building and all were functional. To save time we put a load on each floor all at once. The cost for one load is $1.50 – tokens only. The first floor washer room was a bit scary looking though and we did not go back in there to use the machines.
Grounds/Building: were kept clean and the landscaping and plants were so beautiful. Lots of small lizards so watch out if you are afraid. They are everywhere in the Bahamas. They did not bother me though. Again, the place has a lot of work being done on it both inside and out. The lobby is decorated nicely but no A/C in the lobby or elevators.
Staff: all were friendly and greeted us with a smile. We had no problems with personalities. Locals were just as warm and friendly. There is a security guard on staff all day and night which made us feel quite safe.
Fitness Center: there is a fitness center on the grounds near the pool that is open at 5:30-12 and 4-7. They charge $7.00/day for hotel guests. It was very outdated but served its purpose.
Activities: Port Lucaya is about 20 minutes walk from this condo You can find many activities there - restaurants, bars, concerts at night time, boating, sailing, fishing, snorkeling and other water sports can be found here. The International Bazaar is not as popular as it had been and not many stalls are open. There is an open air market near the Winn Dixie that has produce, straw products and other sourveniers to bring back. We enjoyed that.
Restaurants: Steve referred us to the Bikini Bottom – a beachfront bar and grill that had a fabulous view of the beautiful ocean, outdoor and indoor seating, swings and a play area for kids. The food was pretty good at lunch time. We also ate twice at Zorba’s in Port Lucaya and had fast service, inexpensive meals, with good sized portions. They had a wide variety of foods to select. I highly recommend La Mediterranean in Port Lucaya. There breakfast was great and so was the service. Locals eat things like stewed fish, sardines or tuna with grits, Johnny cake, stewed conch. You can ask around for places with this sort of stuff but Pepper Pot is good (small, not so fast but food worth the wait)
Rental cars: We used Brad’s at the FPO airport and got decent rates and great service. Make sure to fill up before returning the car or you will get charged an additional $10 (plus cost of gas).
Bus service is about a block’s walk away. Cost is $1.00 and bus runs regularly up until sunset. There is also taxi service but is quite expensive. You can call a taxi or pick one up at Port Lucaya, the International Bazaar or any shopping center.
Overall, we enjoyed our vacation tremendously and will return again next year for 2 weeks. We hope to use Steve Pierce’s condo again. I highly recommend his condo - Unit 1602. - Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- The Coral Beach Hotel is also a condominium complex located right on the beach at Coral Road and Royal Palm Way. The facility was seriously damaged back in 2004 and 05 but has been completely renovated since then. About 90% of the condos have also been renovated and updated and are available for rent directly from the owners. Each is unique and has its own character. There is a restaurant/beach bar located on the site serving delicious food and cocktails at very reasonable prices. Check out The Coral Reef Beach Bar on Tripadvisor. It's a short 10 minute walk up the beach to Port Lucaya Market Place, where you can buy anything from T shirts to emeralds, and everything in between. The beach itself is never crowded, the water is crystal clear and the sand feels like sugar. Don't be surprised if you meet a celebrity or two; it's a secret hideaway for some of the rich and famous. ... more less
