“Great Hideaway on a Perfect Beach”

My Wife and I just spent a wonderful week in Sea Shell Studio at Diamonds by the Sea. This is a great little hideaway on one of the nicest beaches on Grand Bahama Island.

This was our second trip to GBI and we love it for its laid back and relaxing atmosphere. The airport has to be one of the easiest international places to fly into and out of in the world. You clear US Customs in Freeport on the way out so you don't have to worry about those long lines at your arrival airport. Rental cars seem to be readily available at the airport with both international and local companies. The maximum speed limit on the island is 45 mph but who needs to go faster. One thing to remember is that they drive on the left hand side of the road so remember to drive left and look right.

When staying at Diamonds by the Sea you will need a rental car as you are about 5 miles from the nearest grocery store and liquor store (at the Solomon's Super Center on Seahorse Rd) and Port Lucaya Marketplace. Food and alcohol is rather pricey on the island so would recommend packing a suitcase with some staples like coffee, cereals, sugar, etc. We even packed a 5 liter box of wine and a couple of the other longer term guests said they packed a cooler with meats, cheese and salad makings.

Sea Shell Studio is a small, but inviting, studio unit with a bedroom (queen sized bed), bathroom and a small kitchen on what used to be a porch but is now closed in. This is definitely a two person max unit. There is a patio just outside your door with a table/umbrella and chairs and this is where you will spend most of your awake time when you are not at the beach or exploring the island. The studio is immaculate and had everything we needed to cook our meals. It has a; small four burner gas stove (tank is under the sink), toaster oven, full sized coffee pot, blender, microwave and a smaller sized refrigerator/freezer (do not over shop as it is too small to fit a gallon of milk into). There is a small table with two chairs in the bedroom which would be uncomfortable to eat at so as long as the weather cooperates you can eat out on the patio table. There is a gas grill on the patio that we used a few times to cook dinner. Don't be too surprised when you uncover it and find a small Coleman style gas grill sitting on an old Gas Grill stand but it works fine. We did see some ants in the kitchen (you're living on sand afterall) so it is best to keep your food wrapped up. Please note that the water from the tap is drinkable and does not have the "from the sea" taste as GBI has its own aquifer to draw from.

The bathroom is very clean and has a shower. The water pressure is fantastic but you may need to wait a bit for hot water as it is an on demand heater. There are small bars of soap but you will need your own shampoo. There were a couple of rolls of toilet paper and I am sure we could have asked for more but we had bought some in our initial shopping and didn't need to.

The bedroom has a large dresser and two closets so you should have plenty of room for your clothes. There is a small flat screen TV mounted in one corner of the room and it is on a cable system so there are lots of choices. It has a DVD built in but the way it is mounted makes putting one in a challenge and I had to cycle the power on the TV to get a disc out. There is a small wall mounted air conditioner but we did not use it as the nights were cooler and we just left the windows open. There is a ceiling fan that helps circulate the air and we also found a small fan in one of the closets (there was also a space heater but it never got cold so we didn't use it) that helped move the air around during the day. The queen bed has seen better days and is very firm. There were plenty of blankets if you get too cold. When we go back again I would bring my own pillows as the ones they provide are very flat and need to be replaced.

The patio is a great place to sit and relax and with the umbrella you can get out of the sun. There was always a nice breeze to cool you off. We had visits from one of the local cats (who we fed while their), birds and a hermit crab, and the occasional small lizards. The foliage around the patio make it a pretty private area to relax in. My only complaint is that the only light available at night is a spotlight on the side of the building which when turned on ruins the atmosphere. The other units had strings of lights on the porch that provided nicer ambiance. There is an outlet (next to the spotlight switch) if you need to plug something in while out on the patio.

The grounds of Diamonds by the Sea are wonderfully maintained and with a coded security gate at the road we felt very safe. It is just a short walk down a sandy path to a gate that provides access to Churchill Beach. There are a number of Adirondack Chairs and a couple of tables that are all available to the guests. One of the tables has an umbrella and a couple of upright chairs with foot stools. Beach towels were provided. The beach is gorgeous with soft white sand and beautiful crystal clear blue water. The water was cool but felt great on those hot sunny days. I loved walking on the beach which is almost three miles long. To the Southwest you can walk a little over a mile to the breakwater and during the walk you go by three beach bars (my favorite is less than 1000' from the beach gate) and then a large development of private homes. The other direction takes you past the nearby all-inclusive resort and more private homes with another beach bar very near the end of the beach. Other than the all-inclusive area the beach is pretty much deserted with just the occasional walker or local residents. Sunrises are best as you are facing SSE when sitting on the beach.

Gladys is the owner and was very nice while Shirley is the person that keeps everything in order. They were both very accommodating and helpful but otherwise left us on our own which was great.

There are four units on the property plus Gladys' house and Shirley's small cottage. Sea Shell is the smallest and is attached to Topaz so you will hear the guests in that unit if they are too loud. It is also toward the back of the property so you will not see the ocean from your unit or from the patio but can hear it when the windows are open and especially at night. Bring a flashlight along if you plan to go down to the beach, or the beach bars, after dark as there are only a few security lights on that side of the property. I took a headlight style with me and went down to the beach at night to read and enjoy the stars.

There is a small laundry available on the other side of Topaz from our unit and does not cost anything to use (sign asks you to limit use to between 10am and 4pm).

Would love to go back to Diamonds by the Sea but when we do we will find friends, or family, to join us and share either the Lilac or Key Lime cottage which are both three bedroom units with; full kitchen, dining area and livingroom, 2-1/2 baths, laundry, plus porches and decks that allow you to see the ocean.

Just got back from a glorious stay at Diamonds by the Sea (Sea Shell Studio). It was our first trip to the Bahamas and it will not be our last. It had everything we could ever need. The people and owner were fabulous and very helpful. The accommodations were perfect for my husband and myself and we are already planning our next trip. We were there about 2 1/2 weeks and never lacked for adventure, relaxation, beach, etc. You are just steps away to a pristine almost empty beach you had all to yourself. I have never come back from a vacation feeling so refreshed and relaxed. Thank you Gladys and your wonderful staff for making it a vacation to remember. We will surely see you next year.

This is one of our favorite places. Staying in the Sea Shell cottage for our first time was a good choice. The cottages are gated which made for better privacy. There were just a couple of minor issues; our grill did not work (there is a grill at each cottage) and we had an infestation of ants. Just walking distance to the ocean. We were even able to take a couple of chairs and set them on the shoreline...ahhhh it was wonderful! Walking distance down the beach was Margaritas. And walking the opposite there were plenty of places to visit.
We rented a car and were able to see the island... great people...good food (fish fry every Wednesday) and wonderful meeting travelers and making new friends! A beautiful island...We walked through Port Lucaya Market many times...plenty to do there... swam with the dolphins...walked the beach where the Pirates of the Caribbean movie had taken place...and the ship is in the waters near the market... enjoyed some delicious bites from various restaurants and explored caves and the National Park...had fun on sea-do's...parasailing...and best of all...snorkeling...enjoyed a snorkeling tour with Pat and Diane Snorkeling...it was the BEST! And Diamonds by the Sea would definitely be the place to stay the next time we come back!

“water and sunshine kept us happy and relaxed”

If you enjoy a private out of the way getaway this would be it. A beautiful beach with your your own little reef to explore awaits.
Our small cottage is great for 2 people-a bed, bath and galley style kitchen so that you can take your morning coffee on the tile patio outside alongside the conch shells and flowers. The barbeque for the evening meals is helpful.
It would be tight if the weather was bad but usually a wind is the only weather to send you indoors. The cottage needs a little updating or tweaking, new mats to collect the sand, new bath mats and a new blind but overall its rustic nature is quite charming.
The larger cottages are quite delightful and it is nice to meet the other patrons for happy hour and to exchange islands tips. A shout out to Steve and Maryanne!
A car is a good idea if you want to see other areas, get groceries. The cottages are out of the way. However, there are island style bars and eateries within walking distance. A great idea for the cottages would be to invest in a couple of bicycles. We would have loved to cycle into Port Lucaya or just around as the island is flat and an easy ride.
A drive to Lucaya National Park is worth it. The beach is stunning and deserted. Going the other direction is Paradise Cove for the snorkle adventurer.
Thanks to Shirley for all of her assistance. We hope to visit again, perhaps with family.
It is a long haul from the west coast of Canada but worth the visit to a tiny piece of paradise.
