We only stayed 4 nights here but wished it could have been longer. The cottage is scrupulously clean and well equipped. There is everything that 2-4 people could require, though seating for meals would be a tight-ish squeeze for 4 big people. 2 big people managed fine.
The cottage if delightfully situated for a quiet stay-- most neighbours reside quietly in the nearby churchyard- and there are views of pleasant open country at the front and the owners splendid garden on 3 sides. Mrs Warren is head gardener and works with enthusiasm and expertise to produce a garden which is e delightful blend of the formal and the natural. Full marks for that. Also for much else!
Halkirk is close to Thurso, Wick, John o'Groats, and Dunnet Head. You can even, if like us you are a bit daft, go to the Orkneys for a day on the ferry for Scrabster. You get a few hours to explore Stromness and its surrounding and decided you would like to go back there.
The village boasts a well stocked shop and a small hotel with very reasonably priced food.
Some other reviewers have criticised some features of the cottage, in a rather mean spirited way. We liked it -- and Mr Warren's paintings. The only trifling niggle was the absence of a shaver socket - a deficiency easily remedied by the purchase of cheap disposable razors from the shop.More
