“Home from home”
Reviewed June 30, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Excellent booking responses, minutes rather than hours. All accomplished relatively late and painlessly.

Owners stay in their house at the other end of their immaculate garden and appear to fall over themselves to be helpful.

Tea, coffee, sugar in copious quantities and a pint of fresh milk in the fridge greet you on arrival. Everything was very clean and in excellent repair.

Cooking facilities include a good size fridge, electric cooker, microwave and toaster as well as a kettle in a good sized kitchen.

The living room has adequate seating and a large flat screen TV and DVD player with a selection of DVD's.

Heating is via electric storage heaters (included in the cost) which does mean you need to anticipate the following days heating requirements.

There is no bath but just an electric shower with a shower curtain round two sides and only a shower tray.

I would echo other comments about the double bed in the main bedroom which was not the most comfortable although an effort has clearly been made with a foam mattress topper and could really do with been the next size up. If this had been better it might have rated a 5 overall.

There is free WiFi provided and it performs well for the area.

The views out over the adjacent countryside are good.

We hoped the topper would resolve only a single adverse comment on the mattress. Perhaps we need a new mattress. May move to a king size sometime but not as yet as all the bedding sets are for a double and this is the first comment on size. No comment made when these people left. They would be welcome again.

“Lovely Cottage and Good Location”
Reviewed June 20, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We wanted somewhere that would be close to the north coast seabird cliffs, with easy access to the eastern birding sites such as Noss Head and not too far from RSPB Forsinard. Halkirk fitted the bill completely for us and the cottage was lovely. We received a warm welcome from Gordon and Gillian and the cottage was in a lovely location at the end of the village and had all the facilities we could have hoped for.

I have given it four stars because the mattress in the main bedroom was a bit lumpy and blackout linings on the curtains in both bedrooms would benefit visitors from further south who aren't used to so much light at 3am. With these modifications it would have easily been five stars.

“Lovely wee cottage!”
Reviewed April 15, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We stayed in the cottage for 3 nights when in halkirk for the NNCCMF. The cottage was very cosy; comfortable & clean . There were 6 adults in our party & it was a bit of a squeeze, but Mr Warren had warmed us that this may be the case.
Overall we had a very enjoyable stay & would definitely stay here again

“Another enjoyable stay”

Our 2nd stay at the cottage after a excellent experience the year before. Cottage was still up to the same standard with everything you need for a short or extended stay.

No issues experienced during our 2 week stay and good weather enhanced the stay. A lovely part of the world to visit with great scenery minimal traffic and peace and quiet in it`s rural location.

No hesitation in highly recommending this holiday let and we will no doubt be rebooking in 2015.

“Clean, clean, clean and very much cared for!”

When you walk in the door and the place smells and looks clean and cared for, the rest is easy. The cottage is traditionally decorated and furnished. Comfy lounge, comfy bed and bedding and everything is so CLEAN!
Shower ok for a stay of four nights - I miss my bath, but that's me. Clean soft towels in plentiful supply. Kitchen has virtually everything you could want - it would sit four there, but six adults would be a squash. However we were only two, so not a problem.
Confess to standing outside in the middle of a clear night to see if I could catch the Northern Lights, nothing doing, but I've never seen so many stars and stood in total silence. Breathtaking! Nicely placed for what we wanted to do in the nearby towns. Although the owners live closely behind the cottage, they might as well have been miles away - no 'interference' at all and it was actually quite reassuring in case of an emergency.
Would we stay again? Yes.

“Short but sweet”

We only stayed 4 nights here but wished it could have been longer. The cottage is scrupulously clean and well equipped. There is everything that 2-4 people could require, though seating for meals would be a tight-ish squeeze for 4 big people. 2 big people managed fine.

The cottage if delightfully situated for a quiet stay-- most neighbours reside quietly in the nearby churchyard- and there are views of pleasant open country at the front and the owners splendid garden on 3 sides. Mrs Warren is head gardener and works with enthusiasm and expertise to produce a garden which is e delightful blend of the formal and the natural. Full marks for that. Also for much else!

Halkirk is close to Thurso, Wick, John o'Groats, and Dunnet Head. You can even, if like us you are a bit daft, go to the Orkneys for a day on the ferry for Scrabster. You get a few hours to explore Stromness and its surrounding and decided you would like to go back there.

The village boasts a well stocked shop and a small hotel with very reasonably priced food.

Some other reviewers have criticised some features of the cottage, in a rather mean spirited way. We liked it -- and Mr Warren's paintings. The only trifling niggle was the absence of a shaver socket - a deficiency easily remedied by the purchase of cheap disposable razors from the shop.
