“Great location, in need of investment.”
Reviewed 25 February 2012

My wife, one and a half year old daughter and I have just returned from a stay in the Bahamas including a week spent at Pink Sands.

Unfortunately the week didn't start too well, on our first evening we went to eat and drink at the 'Blue Bar' only to be turned away and told it was closed for a private function. The night worsened when we returned to find music blaring from the bar which was on top of our villa. This continued beyond 11pm, despite the owners claim below, keeping my daughter up several hours beyond her bed time. For a place that charges a minimum of $600 a night I found this shocking. Thankfully we were staying long enough so that when this was addressed with the manager we were able to be compensated and upgraded to an ocean front villa free of charge.

Things did pick up from there thankfully. The positives are that the resort sits on one of the most beautiful beaches you'll see. The grounds are great as well. Having stayed in one of their garden cottages and ocean front cottages I would without doubt recommend paying the extra for an ocean front cottage. We initially stayed at Dixie Creek, which was overlooked and had the continual sound of golf carts driving by. There was no comparison when we were moved to Long Cay, where we had own piece of paradise overlooking the ocean.

On the negative side, the service is not what you would expect for the prices you pay. The staff are friendly, but on several occasions we called the front desk to fix something, were told it would be done but it wasn't. The staff at the blue bar sit and chat to eachother in the corner until asked for something, despite a mandatory 15% on all food. You'd think someone might actually try to earn their tip but when they don't need to, this seems to be what you get instead. Another issue I had was with all the golf carts. This is a beautiful, quiet resort. However, for me the continual drone of golf carts driving past ruined that vibe. And this wasn't from the guests, it's the staff who seemed to have lost their feet. The resort is tiny, I'd understand if they were carrying large supply's but they used these regardless. For example one employee drove what was a 30 second walk to bring one towel to the gym!?! The only person who did seem to respect this was the manager, who on the whole was the saving grace to this place. When you need something done ask him, because he's the only person who seems to get it done.

I don't think my review was going to be quite as negative as it has ended out, but having read the below reply from the owner I was appalled. What happened to the customer is always right? Those guests spent a small fortune staying at his hotel yet there was no apology in his reply at all. I think this reflects what is wrong with this resort. It is beautiful, a great place to see but your money could be better spent elsewhere.

Part of me hates to write such a horrible review of Pink Sands, but the better part of me knows i have to for others that read sites like these.

My wife and I have spent the last four years going to Pink Sands and staying for five nights in Feb. We have cherished the time on Harbour Island and found Pink Sands to be a really good place to stay. It is no longer a great place to stay, in fact, you would be well served at many other places on the island that are comparably priced.

TWO CONCRETE EXAMPLES of why we wont be going back
1) An owner (not sure how many there are) decided to close the Blue Bar one night and throw a party, Feb. 11th.2012. The music could be heard up and down the beach and in the middle of town. We returned from dinner at 930pm and wanted to get to sleep. We called because the music was so loud it was unbelievable. Other couples in cabins close by also called and voiced their irritation. Another couple was there with their baby and it was bothering them too. We were told the music would stop, security was being sent down to tell them to turn down the music, etc, etc. Not until 1130pm did the music stop. We had decided, along with fellow travelers, that we would never come back. Not only did the folks staying at the resort find it rude and distasteful, the employees were completely in shock by the total lack of regard and respect the owner showed for his paying customers.
2) as if there needed to be another reason....

Room Tip: Don't go

I need to make sure you understand, while myself and my husband were invited to the party, the party had nothing to do with the owners , as the party was paid for and given by one of our repeat guest whose birthday was on February 11th. These guests have been patrons of the hotel for many many years.

The Blue Bar was closed down at 11:00 p.m. The bar was closed down at 10:30 p.m. on a Saturday night and all the guests left the Blue Bar at 11:00 p.m. as I, one of the owners, made sure that everyone was out of the Blue Bar at that time.

Leave your shoes in the room and just jump out there into the pink sandy beaches. My girlfriend and I spent one entire lazy afternoon sipping mango daiquiris at the exquisite blue bar (visually stunning as it contrasts against the pink sand of the beach) with the help from our very pleasant server...wish I could recall his name however the drinks seem to have muddled that part...just plan on doing nothing...although we did go for a long walk down the beach...the swimming is spectacular and the second "active" thing we accomplished whilst staying at Pink Sands. Simply put it is island heaven and just what I need to clear the head and recharge away from "civilization".

Beautifully appointed, private villas for your own piece of paradise. Just a few steps for a wonderful lunch or snack at the "Blue Bar" restaurant on the beach. Try everything on their menu, you will not be disappointed.
Immaculate rooms, fresh linens and a phone call to the front desk for anything you need.
Be sure to check out their private gift shop for local treasures.
We will most certainly return!

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for ocean front rooms.

Wow. This place is wonderful. The jaunt to arrive at Harbour Island is pretty neat but quite a trip: plane lands in Nassau and then: taxi to little plane to taxi to boat to golf cart with Pink Sands staff waiting to take you to the resort. Well worth the trip. Pink Sands grounds are LUSH with towering tropical trees and flowering plants. The staff are so warm and welcoming. The lobby and entry area is exotic and elegant and the shell showpiece is beautiful. Lobby bar does not open until later on in the day (Peter the bartender is lovely) , 5pm-ish but you can always make your way to the "Blue Bar" which is the restaurant and lounge overlooking the ocean on the property. They sell cigars in both bars which is always appreciated by my better half. Giftshop has so many beautiful items and is CRAZY expensive but so is everything in Harbour Island! The resort is set out like a little village, with little private cottages sprinkled throughout the acreage. There are no "rooms" here, just private cottages that get bigger and bigger depending on your needs (there are no accommodations in the main building). We paid $750USD per night (ouch) and stayed in the "Loggerhead" cottage which is a 1 bedroom, oceanfront cottage right by the Blue Bar. The oceanfront cottages are set upon a high ridge that overlooks the ocean. There are also "garden view" cottages that are set further back in the foliage. Everyone rents golf carts to get around (you can rent them via the front desk) and this is the means by which you will navigate Harbour Island (you can drive them right to your cottage and park it there for the duration of your stay). Loggerhead felt "island-y" with the decor of dark wood furniture and bright linens. It was clean and smelled really fresh (a little TOO fresh...housekeeping uses a spray that lingers but will dissipate if you open up all doors and windows). The wifi is perfect both inside the room, on the private balcony and in the Blue Bar. Ensuite kitchen with sink and refrigerator (and coffeemaker) proved very helpful to keep drinks cool and leftovers fresh. The kitchen is ABSOLUTELY STOCKED FULL of booze, never seen anything like it! If you would like a bigger selection of snacks, take your cart into town to the "Piggly Wiggly" or "the deli" - the prices will also be about half. Bathroom and attached closet are both spacious. Iron and ironing board and safe in closet. Didn't like the shower head in the bathroom but the water pressure and aveda products are lovely. Privacy became an issue as there is no warning when staff will come around the corner to refresh your ice, perform turn down service or come in for housekeeping. Food is average to good at the Blue Bar- shrimp appetizer is awesome, conch salad is tough and rubbery (try it at "Queen Conch" and you will change your mind). Complimentary continental breakfast each morning is included in stay (my husband had the a la carte) and it could definitely be added to but served the purpose just fine. The Pink Sands restaurant right off the lobby is very lush and private as it is nestled amongst palm trees and is dim and romantic (was never busy while we were there) . There are some excellent dishes and some average dishes. VERY expensive. Best calamari we have ever had. Pepper pot was nice but could have been better. Great steak and caprese salad! We dined in once and ordered room service once and the room service took over an hour to come but was well worth it. I advise going for a little drive within Pink Sands to look at some of the bigger cottages, they really are spectacular! Pink Sands also has residential properties within the resort and are currently selling plots to build on. The roving roosters and hens here made my day each time I saw them and especially each time they crowed! They are so beautiful. Pink Sands is a luxury resort with a laid back, casual feel to it - no pressure, no pretention. A wonderful place to put the hustle and bustle of whereever you are from away and CHILL OUT.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are lovely. Ask for a private one.

My husband, 4 year old son and I stayed a week at Pink Sands over the Thanksgiving holiday. We could not have been more pleased. Pink Sands is casually elegant and carefree- - the kind of place where childhood memories are made. There is little to do on the property other than go to the beach, the pool and the restaurants. That was perfect for us, and given the beauty of the beach and grounds, that really is enough. But, renting a golf cart, at least for a day or two, is an easy way to explore the rest of the island.

The room was lovely and the size just fine to accommodate 3 people. We stayed in a one bedroom garden cottage, and enjoyed having a patio and front yard area (replete with a flock of chickens). Unless an ocean view is a "must have" the garden cottages are just fine.

The staff was accommodating and friendly. The manager was engaging, and we were happy to hear that the property is becoming even more child friendly, with a kids club in the works.

The continental breakfast was fresh and plentiful. We ate several lunches and dinners at the Blue Bar and the Garden restaurant. The food was good, but expensive. However, that is the case everywhere on the island. Sip Sip is the best place for lunch and The Landings the best place for dinner. Both are convenient to Pink Sands.

The only suggestions we have are:
1. We would like to see the Blue Bar serve food a little later. There is a gap because service stops at 4:00 PM at the Blue Bar, but does not start until 6:30 PM at the Garden restaurant. Pink Sands is a great place for kids (especially the younger set), and it would be nice to be able to have an early, casual dinner on property -- but 4:00 PM is a little too early.

2. The 4% resort fee doesn't seem justifiable. We can't envision what it might cover. We are not complaining about the lack of "big resort" amenities - - the low key atmosphere is why we selected Pink Sands. However, given the hefty price tag, and service fees, it seems like the 4% resort fee could be omitted.

We arrived about 6.30pm when it was dark. It was an easy transfer to the hotel as we were met off the plane and taken to the boat for the short journey to Harbour Island. The hotel is set back from the beach (not far though!) - the sand is amazing and the water looked beautiful even though the weather wasn't great. Probably in a couple of weeks from now, it will be perfect. The room itself was fine; big and airy with plenty space for luggage. However, there was no internet connection and our phone didn't work either. The staff were friendly, although I did overhear (what looked like) the boss telling the bar staff to use up and sell the leftover wines as chardonnay! And later that evening, I overheard the same guy discussing the price of water for an imminent wedding party..conversation went something like this.. "6 dollars for water!!" "well it costs me 3 dollars and I have to get a 20% profit"...
......(eh..thats 50%)

This kind of money grabbing attitude isn't very attractive is it? We had originally planned to stay 10 nights but left after 4 days due to the weather. I would recommend hiring a golf buggy from Johnston's. Had we decided to stay longer or indeed if we ever return, we would hire a house on the beach instead of staying at the pink sands simply because I like the privacy and it would be better value.
