Hotel au Marais has it all - an idyllic position on the canal, superb multi-lingual hosts Paolo and Natalie, spacious rooms, comfortable beds, great showers with plenty of water pressure and almost instant hot water, breakfast that includes home-made yoghurt (head for the meat and cheese container and grab a little pot of it) and cakes and espresso among other things.
I cannot think of a single reason why anyone would not want to stay here. Unless it's booked out, in which case you'll have to return to Coulon another time just to relax in the welcoming embrace of this hotel.
What a review! Many thanks for sharing your experience at the Hôtel au Marais! It is a pleasure for all the team to read your compliments ans pleasure was shared!
Kind Regards from Coulon,
Nathalie & Paolo
This small quaint family run hotel is ideally situated on a canal waterfront in a central location in Coulon, with close proximity to restaurants and shops.
The room we stayed in was beautifully presented, full of character and appropriately furnished. In addition, it was spacious (including the bathroom), extremely clean, had a comfortable bed and a window looking out over the canal. Free Wi-Fi was available and worked well.
A more than adequate continental style breakfast was provided which comprised of yoghurts, cereals, fresh bread / pastries, ham, cheeses, juice and hot beverages.
If driving, there are several parking spaces on the roadway at the hotel, however, if taken, there is parking available at the nearby town square car park.
Overall, we had a lovely stay, with the new owners (Paolo & Natalie) being extremely hospitable hosts and would have no hesitation in recommending Hotel au Marais.
It is a pleasure to hear from you!

Some hotels have it, some don’t - this one definitely does. I booked our visit 6 months ago as part of a fairly long ‘progress’ around France. For ‘family’ reasons we had to reorganise and with 24 hrs notice I rang to ask if we could bring our booking forward - no problems, no teeth sucking, no ‘transfer fee’- just a reassuring “of course” ( in English which was even more reassuring - my French breaks down, a bit, under the strain of ‘organisational chaos’ ). We arrived, after 650 km driving, to a reserved parking space ( if you know Coulon, you’ll understand) and a warm welcome. The hosts really do provide service with a smile.
The room was spacious, cool on a day with temperatures over 30c, beautifully decorated and properly equipped. While this is a small family hotel the visitor quickly notices the care taken with everything, the way that the decoration is in excellent condition and everything works. Our room looked out onto a quiet lane leading to the water and we had our windows open.....a wonderful luxury in such warm weather.
The hotel is perfectly positioned, by the water, close to restaurants etc and so reasonable at 87€ a night. A huge spread for breakfast ( our only criticism.....no croissants! We so look forward to proper French Croissants after our, relatively, poor English attempts) with bread, brioche, fruit etc etc etc....all for 8.90€.
Really, apart from the croissants ( sorry Rudolf), Hotel du Marais is difficult to beat!
We arrived after a tiring drive and found this pretty little hotel beside the canal. We were welcomed by the owner who was most kind and considerate. Our room overlooked the canal and was delightful with comfortable beds and a well equipped bathroom.
Hotel Au Marais is close to the village centre where the are many good places to eat.
This is a family run hotel and every effort is made to make the visitor welcome.
Breakfast in the morning was served in a bright sunny room across the street, it was very comprehensive.
Having been refreshed by this charming small hotel we continued our journey south. We would certainly stay here again.
We were last here in 1976 so after a long road trip we diverted to Coulon before catching the ferry from St Malo. A different family were running the hotel and the rooms had been beautifully modernised. Attentive service and they arranged our trip on the Marais at very short notice. To enjoy the peace of the Marais at its best go early morning or last thing when there are only a few punts around.
Luckily we also attended the fete and celebrations showing how the community lived 100 years ago.
