Was staying nearby and decided to pop over to the Smokehouse for some scones and tea with my spouse and 2 year old and to have a look at the place for ourselves, because we had decided not to stay at this place because of some deal-breaker type reviews on TripAdvisor.

The scones and tea were nice, above average in my opinion, but not fantastic, but the real charm of this place is the absolutely fantastic gardens and authentic colonial style bungalow maintained in a very authentic English style.

Sadly, the quality of service by some on the wait staff let the place down.

We ordered a scones and tea set, which comes with a pot of tea, one scone, a piece of fruit cake, and 2 slices of Standard sliced bread's worth of cream cheese + cucumber + tomato sandwiches for about MYR 45 (not cheap by Malaysian standards), but since my spouse was not keen on drinking a lot of tea that evening, we decided that we'd share the pot.

However, when we asked for a second (empty) cup, we were quite curtly told "you'll need to order another set to get another cup"!

I'm not sure if that was because the tea is "unlimited" (i.e. They would refill it as many times as one asked), because we were never told that, and decided not to bother asking after that last line.

In my opinion, no self-respecting establishment would force a patron to order another instance of a dish just to get additional tableware, so that turn of events turned what could have been a 5 star rating to a 3 star rating, redeemed from a 1 star rating only by the beauty of the venue itself, and the decent quality food.

We still enjoyed the scones, tea, and garden, and even ordered more - because we wouldn't let one sour-puss waiter ruin our evening, but we decided that we wouldn't bother asking about the accommodation, because we know that we can get much better service for our money elsewhere.

So, if being treated well is very important to you, give this place a miss.

If you need to get away, the Smokehouse is just perfect. The cool fresh air, quiet ambience, the English charm and the hospitality; the best experience. The staff are wonderful and service is exceptional; indeed it is service with heart. This is the kind of place you want to just relax in and not do anything else, except soak in the ambience, or sit in the beautiful garden and read or at most take a walk around the beautiful golf course. Bring a book, bring two, relax and read. In the evening, savour the best scones with tea and later relax and keep warm near the fireplace, and enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail or wine and have a chat with Jo. Don't miss Chef Nathan's roast lamb. It's divine! Breakfast is freshly prepared upon order; it is scrumptious and keeps you going the whole day!
It's like having a home in the highlands. The people are wonderful, make you feel at home and the place is great. Will definitely return.

The hotel is good, food is ok eat as they serve you don't have any expectation. I asked for choices of cereal and the Aunty waitress told me only corn flakes. Asked for cappuccino she said only coffee or tea!

Be ready to carry your own luggage. Garden is good. If you are an Indian the gate keeper looks at you one kind and ask you what you want until you say I am a guests here than his expression changes. Pretty common in Malaysia. Hahahaha... Anyways we enjoyed the garden.

Some staff - at the reception are good during my checkin there's was an Indian guy who was good and during check out there was a Chinese girl who was good. This property perhaps needs younger blood.

Cobweb in the room - my total bill was RM400 for that price you get a very decent hotel in KL

Upon check in there was a fruit basket with oranges and apples with stickers on the fruits.

I have accidentally booked this hotel thinking it was the Lake house Cameron Highlands.

Will I go back here - I don't think so...

The building is beautiful and historic (although could do with some maintenance) and the gardens are pretty but very small. In general the service was perfectly fine. But you got the distinct impression that the staff did not enjoy working there which made for quite an uncomfortable stay (with the exception of the waiter who served breakfast who was lovely). The food was very overpriced and substandard. Probably a nice novelty for people who have never been to England but greasier than a working man's cafe. In general - it's fine - and there is not much competition in the area.

We visited the Smokehouse for dinner, and while the surroundings were undeniably charming, the food was terrible and overpriced. I ordered Caesar salad which was drowned in anchovy and garlic flavoured oil (unpleasant), and my partner ordered steak of which half was gristle/fat.

The staff were very welcoming upon arrival but during dinner they were not attentive and we were not asked at any point if everything was OK with the meal, or if we had enjoyed out food. A disappointing evening.
