The rooms: were huge but tired. Peeling paint, old plugs etc did hamper the old-world experience quite a lot but the overall sense of nostalgia works well enough. We had some serious issues with our kids and mosquitoes (I don’t think the room had been ‘protected’ in a while) but the problem seemed to solve itself as soon as we left the hotel.
- breakfast was really good. A solid and hearty English breakfast based on a set menu.
- Lunch was disappointing - very plain and prepared without much effort or seasoning at all.
- But tea was amazing! The best scones and clotted cream this side of the Urals. Totally worth sitting out in their beautifully, flowered garden. That is an experience not to be missed.
The location: the hotel is a little on its own and not walking distance from town.
It’s very easy to forget at times that we were in Malaysia at all when you’re at the smokehouse. Provided you’re ok with an experience that focuses entirely on nostalgia (warts and all) then you’ll love it. More
