Drove across yesterday and wow it's a long bridge. the history of the building of the bridge really puts into perspective of how constructively sound it is.

We took the bridge both ways during our trip to PEI. While its pretty pricey ($48), you only pay going off-island and still less expensive than the ferry. Its very convenient, taking about 15-20 minutes.
We had one issue paying our toll. We decided the lines were shorter on the automated lanes, so tried to use our credit card in them. It kept asking for a PIN number and I don't have one. I do for my Debit card , but not for my credit card. We tried the help button. They said to retry it. We did. Rejected. So we had to back up the line of traffic behind us and go over and cut into the manned lanes. Embarrassing! Then the card still didn't work. We used another just fine.
Our bank said our card got locked for too many retries and we'd have to wait 24 hours for it to unlock. So my tip is to use the manned lanes even if the automated ones are shorter.
Being a resident of Quebec and witnessing the horrible construction that we endure on a daily basis it’s quite impressive to see a bridge like the one PEI and New Brunswick have constructed. I think Montreal could take a lesson or two from their engineers and their builders. You don’t have much of a view while in the car as the barriers are quite high but the short distance you have to travel just to get to PEI was well worth it.
Have crossed this Bridge many times...Always take a big breath as we approach, from either side..
Definitely worth the $47.00..You only pay when you leave PEI
On our recent tour of the Maritime Provinces we crossed from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island on the Confederation Bridge which opened on May 31,1997 and replaced the ferry service. It is 8 miles long and took 4 years and over 5,000 workers to build it. It is a curved bridge and the longest n the world, crossing ice-covered water. It is an easy and convenient way to get to Prince Edward Island. However, the high rails do prevent you from seeing the views. Bridge tolls are collected when leaving Prince Edward Island. It was a thrill to drive over it.
We stopped at a little park on the NB side before crossing the bridge. It cost $47 for a 2-axle vehicle which is paid on the PEI side. We had a SUV and were able to enjoy the spectacular view which reading other reviews people in cars cannot see as well. It is worth the crossing in a vehicle that is high enough.
