“The good and the bad”
Reviewed 29 March 2012

Well this will be one of the only so so reviews I have written about a resort, all my experiences to date have been excellent . Let me start by saying the area is just wonderfull, nice hot sunny weather all the time and clean and safe with lots of awsome beaches and places to explore. Now the resort itself had some problems, first the good points, rooms were clean and so was the hotel itself, service was good most of the time with exceptions and again area was great. Now the part I do not like doing the bad, this hotel way over booked while we were there and it was totally over run with kids and locals and when I say this I mean way out of control. The 2 pools were packed and the adult pool constantly had children in it believe me it was an ongoing battle with parents to get their kids out of this pool. With the influx of people the service just was not there...no service on beach, poolside was sparodic at best and buffets was just as bad having to get up ourselfes countless times to get water or coffee. Also one other point do not upgrade to premium total waste of money with very little advantage to it. In conclusion would go back to Huatuclo but never to this resort again

We stayed at the Barcelo in Huatulco from March 6-13th. Our Sunwing flight was delayed because of a storm in Saskatoon, so we had to fly via Toronto which was not anyone's fault other than old man winter. Sunwing did everything they could to get us to Hualtulco which they did on the same day, also received some free perks on the plane which was nice of them! The check in at our hotel was very swift, they had been expecting our late arrival so they were set up in a hospitality room.
The next day we went and got an upgrade to a room on the 5th floor (507) with a king-size bed facing the ocean, we paid $30.00 a nite for the upgrade but was well worth it! I have nothing to say negative about the resort or the food it was great, rooms were cleaned daily, fridge was stocked daily and staff was very accomidating. We choose to take a cab to the local snorkling beach rather than get on a boat for the 7-bay tour, why? Because we had alot to explore in Huatulco in a short time and going on a boat for 6 or 7 hours just cut into that time. The cab driver that took us to the bay stopped at a few places on the way so we could take pictures and see the view. Wonderful view from the Lighthouse.
We went to Don Porfino's for my husbands birthday supper and it was awesome, lobster, prawns and your choice of steak on an outdoor grill. We also went to Santa Cruz one morning to see the sights and shop. La cruceita was also a wonderful place to shop, have a drink and watch curling. Be aware of the heat, as soon as you leave your resort it seems to be hotter away from the water so venture into town later(even though it doesn't cool off too much at nite).
The beach out front was our favourite spot, the water was different everyday, but the sun stayed hot the whole time 37 & 38 degrees. I liked to shop from the locals on the beach, you definately get the same deals there than in town...if not better!
I would definately go back to this resort again, only I would stay for 2 weeks next time!

Room Tip: pay the upgrade when you get there, face the ocean and listen to the waves at nite!

Bahias de Huatulco is the largest ecological reserve designated by the Mexican government,...the Beaches are beautiful. The walk ways to Chahue and Santa Cruz Bays are clean & safe. The Barcelo is located in Tangolunda Bay in the perfect spot! The resort is clean & the staff are very friendly. The head chef Rosa was wonderful !!! Looking forward to my next visit having been going down for years & still enjoy the area. Make sure you go explore all the Bays.

Stayed at the Barcelo March 13-20.

The great: (1) Huatulco weather is fantastic - sunny, always at least 30 degrees, nice humidity, and consistent day after day, (2) the hotel was very clean, maid service very good, (3) service at the bars was usually quite good, (4) people were friendly and warm, very good English, (5) enough kid friendly food at the buffet, (6) didn't ask for any kind of damage deposit or credit card indent upon check-in, (7) compact layout of the resort made getting around easy, (8) usually lots of space by the pools, but do get there early, (9) bellinis at breakfast, (10) felt safe and secure, (11) the evening shows really were quite good.

The average: (1) Buffet food on the whole was decent. I still say they totally overcook everything related to a protein. Sometimes the fresh juices tasted like they were spiked with Tang! Overall, the food was better than Las Brisas by a notch. They did seem to bring out fresh food quite frequently, so that was a real positive. (2) The drinks were good overall, a step above the basics, but not premium, (3) The beach area was usually clean, but sometimes it had noticeable amounts of trash, (4) dinner and poolside service was friendly but average unless you were drinking and tipping a lot - then it got better, (5) room amenities like minibar and TV were average.

Room to improve: (1) anything related to seafood at the buffet or at the a la carte dining options was less than fresh, with the exception of the fried fish fingers (great) and one of the ceviche dishes. Having cooked in seafood restaurants , I know fresh vs reheated/reused/old. (2) Smoking poolside? YUCK! Make the whole place non-smoking please! And people, don't butt your putrid ashes on the nice clean beach...(3) beds were firm, but very very lumpy and uncomfortable, (4) on day two of our vaca they wanted to fumigate our room! Please, do that between guest visits.

Other tips/comments: There are activities at the pool and elsewhere - check out the activity board. These seemed only modestly attended. They also have lots of non-motorized water activities. The crowd at this hotel seemed to be more likely over 50 than 40 and under. I really wish they would not allow motorized sports on Tangolunda bay - seriously, if this is a preserved eco area then ban those damn seados, etc!

The hotel and staff were wonderful!! the only downside would be the bars at the beach close at 7pm...

Room Tip: Ask ahead of time to pre book a king size bed rather than the two doubles...

Out of the luxury resorts on Tangolunda Bay, Barcelo is the best! Actually, there are only three that have direct beach access and you can hear the waves at night. Barcelo, Dreams and Secrets. Las Brisas (Club Med) and Quinta Regal are removed from the beach so a long walk or cart ride is needed to get you there. Secrets is on a small cove of the Tangolunda Bay not shared by the rest, a tiny beach and the resort is 600 rooms. Actually, when your kayaking on the bay it looks like the backend of a Cruise ship that ran aground in that small cove. Dreams use to be the Gala Resort but with the conversion they ripped out all the vegetation and made it rather Euro with stainless, glass, white/yellow walls and infinity pools everywhere. Barcelo is orange and clay with plants, palms and even the wood steps leading to the open air entry. The grounds are totally maintained and the staff is very protective to keep it that way, you do the same as a guest.

Food: If you can't find something on any buffet then your too picky of an eater. We enjoyed all the resturants a couple times except the Sushi. Sushi, ain't our thing and did not go - sorry!

Bars: There are not that many. Most patrons simply wanted water, fruit juice or soda to fight back the thirst caused by the sun. Mas cervezas worked also!

Nightlife: Dance Troupe show every night. They are good but same steps different costume themes.

Sounds like we are knocking Barcelo for lack of Bars and Nightlife. Wrong! If you want both, try Cancun, Cabo, Negril or other hot spots. This place is serene, even the little ones that have been "hooping and hollering" all day fall asleep after the sun goes down.

Bottom line, Nice place to visit and we did not want to leave.

Room Tip: Master 544-546 or 545-547 provide the best views with an outdoor jacuzzi.

My family and I had spent 3 months in the summer a year and a half ago. We lived like the locals. This time around we could only swing a week. We stayed at the Barcelo and loved it. We have 2 children (12 and 9) who the entertainment staff took a liking too. Even though there was a kids club for ages babies - 12 years, my kids just hung out at the pool and played with the entertainment staff. Special thanks goes out to DANIEL and DULCE! You made our vacation! The rooms were nice and spacious, as well as the bathroom. We loved sitting on our balcony and watching the sun come up. We never did any of the al la cartes because we were so satisfied with the buffet. The omlettes in the morning were huge, and the pasta at supper were delicious. The staff were so friendly and always went out of there way to help you in any way they could. If you are looking for a nice, quiet resort to relax at this is the resort for you. If your looking for a loud, party atmosphere go to Cancun. Huatulco is popular with the Mexicans so sometimes its easy to feel outnumbered unless your fluent in Spanish. But I think that is part of its charm. All in all we had a wonderful vacation and will definately stay at Barcelo again. (On a side note, if any of you travel to the Barcelo in Cancun keep an eye out for Alejandro "Alex" as part of the entertainment staff. He was wonderful here, but decided to try his hand down in Cancun.)
