Was at the Barcelo Feb.4 to the 18. Huatulco is a great place to visit hot sunny and wonderful people. The Barcelo not so good. Paid extra for the premium plus. Was very dissapointed. I hink everyone got the same service. Must say did have a lovely ocean view. The promise of being ableto dine in the spcialty restaurants as often as you wanted foget it, our first week could not get in at all and had to fight to get in a couple times the second week. We are3 an older couple and found we could not find a quieter area to sit in the evening. even going into the premium room room where the computers are was great the first week the second week there were children running around yelling and hollering and playing with the treats set out. This was at 10 or later in the evening and I do feel there should be a quiet area for seniors. Could notask for better service from the employees there wonderful and very helpful. Flew sunwing and also paid extra for elite service on the return flight the attendents were wonderful going down a different story. were supose to get headphones when I asked about it about 1/2 hour out of Hautulco they said they passed them at start of flight when I pointed out they missed our row the were very snotty in there attitude. Lots of leg room but sure not much behind room. My husband and I each had aisle seats my poot husband had 2 very to be polite very big man and woman beside him, same couple for him on the way back. The woman was hung over into his seat and he spent most of the flight hanging out into the aisle. I am aware that Sunwing can do a lot abousize but I do feel that sure be a cut off of size or you pay for an extra seat. The meal on the aircraft was not good. Speaking of meals at the hotel the food was just pasable did not go hungry or get sick but we have stayed at other Barcelos and had great meals. Needless to say will not go to this hotel again

We arrived at the Barceló February 04-11. We were a little delayed due to flights. Our concierge was there to book us in separately with a tasty beverage and loaded with information! Our room was #231. Our maid always kept it clean and bountiful with fresh towels! What a fabulous view of the ocean! We even saw a whale come in to feed twice during the week around 5:00! The hotel itself was very clean, and it didn't matter what kind of staff you encountered, they were very friendly! Food was great. No complaints. We are not picky eaters and can always find something tasty. We really enjoyed the Mexican a la cart. If you have up-graded to Premium, check out the lounge. Tasty appies, games, and friendly concierge to help you with whatever questions you have. Tip: Book ALL your a la carts at once as they tend to fill up very fast! We booked fishing with Conception off the beach. Great guy, very knowledgeable. When he promised dolphins, he wasn't kidding! hundreds of them jumping and swimming right beside our boat! Turtles, sting rays, and flying fish as well! Don't spend the extra dollars booking with JT! The beach was very nice for the first three days, then the waves got too much to swim in. If it's a bit calm, walk down to the Dreams beach and snorkel. All kinds of pretty fish!
We definitely will be back. It's a nice small resort. A great way to escape Canadian winters for a little while!

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Premium! It's worth the view and service! Odd number rooms for sure!

Day 1; We flew with Sunwing 737-800 service to Huatulco.....the Elite Plus check-in is always a nice perk and we departed YWG on schedule......The cabin crew was very professional and friendly.....in fact I give Sunwing top marks on both legs of the trip for on-time performance and in-cabin service..
We were seated on the starboard side of the aircraft in Elite Plus seats up near the front.......our friends were seated directly behind us, and some old pals from the Barcelo happened to be on the same flight as us, seated behind our travelling companions......In the front row on the starboard side were some elderly travellers, and one across the aisle in row 1.....now, I don't know if it was the food served, or if one of them had IBS, or had been practicing eating Mexican food before getting to Mexico, but every time one of them fired an "aft torpedo", it stunk up the cabin so bad that some people nearly puked.......and that is the truth.......I've flown a fair amount in my time, but have never encountered anything so putred in all my travels.....We couldn't wait to get out of that plane.....Speaking of which, there must be some unwritten law that states the people in row 1 are to be first off the plane......Reeallly now.....? If you are in the front row, you have no under-seat stowage of your carry-on during take-off and landing....the people seated in the row behind can stow their bag under the seat......so when the plane stops at the terminal, we have our carry-on in hand, seat belt off, and we just get up and walk past row 1 who has yet to get out of their seat to reach for their bag in the overhead compartment.....I don't want to hear from some gaseous old biddy who says, "Vats Dis....???" as we walk past them to the exit door......Then her hubby across the aisle says, "You know what they say, first one out the plane is at the pool at 6 AM" .....We did not respond to their little hissy fit....
As the little old English lady once said, "book cattle class, expect to encounter cattle"......

The Barcelo Hotel is showing its age, and the staff are showing signs of strain......The rooms need a complete overhaul, including bathroom fixtures and flooring.....the water pressure and water temperature would fluctuate a great deal.....The hotel needs more staff for pool side beverage service.....in years past, we had a drink every half hour, this time we were lucky to see a waiter twice in one day.....The staff really tried hard but there was no way they could keep up with the demand.......It's a good thing we had our oversized Bubba Kegs, as we just went to the pool bar and had the bartender fill them up with our favourite drink......a little ice and we were good for a few hours....

Week 1; Four a la carte restaurants per week, the Spanish and the La Tortuga steak & seafood were our favourites......The Suwing BBQ on Monday nights is always a fun time.....met some great folks from other parts of Canada......The two buffet restaurants served the standard AI food......you never went hungry, that's for sure.....

Let me give some of the first time visitors to the Barcelo a little hint when it comes to the a la carte restaurants.......Don't walk up to the restaurant at 6:30 PM in swim trunks, a Roughrider shirt, baseball cap on backwards, cigarette in hand, tattoos on crooked, without a dinner receipt for the restaurant, and expect to get seated and served.....simple as that.....

Towel game: I won every day.......gee, I guess the first off the plane really does get up at 6 AM to reserve the lounger of their choice...

Week 2: The weather and tempers kept getting hotter and hotter.....The poolside bartenders were getting grumpy due to being overworked, but it did seem to help by tipping them well and speaking Spanish with them......I think they and all the staff appreciate the effort when a guest speaks in their language.....

The Barcelo is a grand old girl, but she is definitely getting old......it is a beautiful resort with some truly beautiful people who work there....but we will not return to the Barcelo in Huatulco until a major upgrade in facilities, rooms, and staff has taken place.....

We travelled with family and friends February 10-18 and we're not totally pleased. Seemed to be very understaffed as the rooms weren't cleaned until we were gone for supper. The bars were totally swamped by people as there was only the beach bar during the day and the lobby bar at night. You had to feel sorry for the staff who were literally run ragged. During the orientation you are given the hard sell about booking tours etc thru the hotel and given warnings about the beach vendors which was a little tacky. You are fast talked by JT into signing up with prices and deals thrown around and in the end there is really no deal. If we had it to do again would definitely deal with the beach vendors as in discussion with others they are a far better price and more to offer. We went fishing and booked thru the hotel, we were told it would be an all day but we were picked up 6:30 and returned to the hotel at 11:30. Barely a 4 hour trip for $650. No breakfast available before we left and when we got back there were no buffets yet open so we had to wait for an hour before we could eat. We were very hungry. Suggest that since the hotel is involved in the tour sales they should perhaps have something available to eat. We assumed there would be lunch on the boat, but there was not. We were also expected to tip the fishermen as we were told our rental was only for the boat and the fishermen only get paid with the tips???
We were disappointed In the number of beach huts. They were way off to the side and only a few so that meant everyone had to sit by the pool if you did not want to sit in the open on the beach.
Was very little available for activities except for water aerobics during the day.
The buffets were always done with lots of variety, but it seemed to be the same variety every day.
We did not bring long pants for the men so did not take advantage of the a la cartes. It was disappointing that you could not eat at the beach buffet in the evening as it was converted to the steak house so the only place available every night was the restaurant inside the hotel which was always very busy as it is very small.
The staff was always very helpful and courteous.
The hotel is showing a lot of signs of age, with plumbing issues ( toilets that continually plug and won't flush) and inconsistent water pressure. Many patio doors don't close properly.
Would we return for another holiday? Not likely. Don't feel we got value for our money. as beautiful as the country is, we would go back but to a different resort

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views and you don't hear everyone walking by and the carts rumbling ov...

My husband and I spent two weeks at the Barcelo this year from February 11- 25th. This was our 3rd visit to this hotel in the past 5 years. In the past we have always loved this hotel, in fact, we spent our honeymoon here so it definitely was a special spot for us.

However, when we returned to the Barcelo, after a two year hiatus, we found a noticeably declined was the service as follows:

Bar service around the pool area was negligible, even when we tipped. I would not, however, blame the workers as it appeared to me that they were understaffed, with sometimes only one waiter to serve the entire area. The Barcelo seems to be cutting corners with staff this year where in the past the pool waiters came by so often we had to pass on some rounds!

Maid service was irregular in timing (however the cleaning itself was very good) and there were at least two days when our room was not clean by the time we returned from the pool around 4:00 p.m. and we had left the room around 10:00 a.m. On those days the room did get cleaned but only when we went out for dinner.

Towels were also an issue as well, I had to call down to the desk several times for clean towels, which to their credit, were delivered very quickly.

Towel game at the pool .... Yes it is here as it is at most resorts, and I must admit we participated or we did not get chairs. While I don't agree with holding a chair all day if you are out on an excursion...we personally do spend most of the day by the pool and did reserve chairs. We like to go to the gym, have a shower, eat breakfast and then head out to the pool and are usually there by 10:00 at the very latest and spend most of the day (albeit we take a break for lunch or water exercises), but that is what people do when they are on vacation. The way I see it is not so much people reserving chairs that are the problem, but rather the hotel for booking to capacity and then not providing enough chairs.

The hotel itself is showing its age...while overall very clean it is time to remodel folks or drop your prices...you cannot charge similar rates to the Dreams, which has been totally redone and expect to keep clientele. This hotel also once was considered the best in service and that is what kept many of us coming back and we turned a blind eye to the "aging process, but that too seems to I longer exist.

I would like to end with a positive ... We did thoroughly enjoy the a la carte restaurants with the Spanish being our favorite. I do applaud that we can now book all our a la cartes at once rather than standing in line day after day. James, our Sunwing rep, was, as always, very helpful. I also required the services of the Resort's doctor and he was very professional and excellent. Meds were required and the hotel called the pharmacy on my behalf and had them sent to the hotel by taxi within the 1/2 hour and the cost was very reasonable. A+ service here!

Would we go back ... given the prices quoted for this past year probably not.... Barcelo in our minds has slipped in service to 3 star and we, therefore, feel it fell short for the price.

We spent 2 weeks here from Feb.4-18, 2014
The resort was very clean, the pools were great, the view was wonderful but the internet was terrible. It was a hit and miss every day. EVEN at the Coffee Shop across the street.
We booked a Sup.Garden view room and we were Very happy with our location. We were on the 5th floor with a garden and ocean view. The best of both! The Dreams resort was right next door and there was no problem with noise from there.
The rooms were nice, but I do understand some do need repairs to their bathrooms with the need of knew countertops or flooring. Our maid was efficent, but there was a lack of communication. They speak little, to know English. (WE need to learn and retain more Spanish). Don't expect flowers on your bed or fancy things made from your towels. We did have a flower placed on our bed one day and flower petals on another. The beds are OK. Our maid always left towels, faceclothes, and kept the room tidy. The fact that the resort employed expecting mothers was refreshing. The maid we had was escorted with a young man to help her with heavy lifting and moving the cart. Another was a server and a main Hostess in the Mexican A-la-cart resturant. Bravo... for helping those in need...... The resort had family values. They had a wonderful area for the children's swimming fun. The swim up bar was good... but the bar tenders struggled to keep up. So at times it was slow service.
The Barcelo had 4 A-la-carts. We did do all of them. We enjoyed the Seafood(the Tutuga) one the most. The buffet was average to good. You never went hungry.
The entertainment was average. We have seen it all before. The front desk was average. The SunWing rep was a man referred to as JT. He was friendly, but we did here many complaints about him from others there.
We were very surprised to see the presence of Canadian Sports ther. Our welcome tour guide greeted us with Saskatchewan Rough Rider gear. They wore it at the Marina as well.... Any area sport favorite was present. Whether it be Soccer, Hockey, Football or Baseball. This was really nice. It made everyone feel at home.
The guests there were 90 percent plus Western Canadians. The handful of Eastern Canadians there were french Canadians and rude. I just don't understand why they think Quebec is a country... for heaven's sake... Quebec is a province in Canada..... There were a couple that had to travel with our bus to an excursion. They spoke little english but did understand English but had a interruptor. They would not sit with us at the buffet style lunch provided on the excursion. They had their food served separate to them in another area. They give Canadians a bad name. They probably also wanted their beds turnned down for them . Well my question is .. what the heck are they doing here?... they are not booked into a 5 star resort.
The area is beautiful .... clean, safe and very friendly.
The we took part in are the City tour.... it was interesting. The Waterfall tour .... this was our best excursion.... we really enjoyed our guide and the sites. The Paradise Bay & Snorkle tour was ....just ok. The only real drawback was.. the excursion did not include a lunch on the boat. Some folks werevery hungry. The rep. Told us it was because of motion sickness. We did stop for a shore snack. The excursion did provide 3 rolled tortilla things to eat. They were good, but if you needed meal, you were asked to support the local resturant by ordering something yourself. Within the hour we were given at this location.Well it was here where we were swamped with local mercants trying to sell you something. Every 3 -4 mins. They came back to your table to sell you something. You just can't support everyone. The currents at the location to snorkle the reef were very strong, and not very colourful. Funny thing, no guide was worried about motion sickness on the boat ride back.....
The Coffee Plantation tour... was a disappointment. The harvest was overand for being a pricey excursion.... it was no where near worth it. We drove for 1.5 hours to listen to a 20 min. Video... trekked up a mountain to see nothing and back down. To then hear 15 more mins. Of the process that follows the harvest. It was interesting.... The lunch was really good.... then back on the bus.
We did 2 fishing excursions. They were very good. We caught plenty of fish and we experienced some of natures beauty. We have seen, swam with and played with Dolphins before, but this was special. We came up upon a huge school ofswimming dolphins. They were just every where! Jumping Stingray's and the most Sea Turtles we have ever seen.
The resort did do a wonderful thing on Valentines day. First of all, in the late afternoon they delivered a plate to each room with a decorated cupcake and 2 chocolate covered strawberries. At the evening dinner, they presented each couple with a Red long stemmed rose to give to your significant other. VERY NICE TOUCH. They also did a nice thing for their staff too. They had a staff only garden dinner bbq.... for them to attend inbetween things. Very nicely set up.....
Over all... this resort is not a high end Barcelo resort like many of others they have.
It was as we expected, 3.5 - 4 star in our opinion.
As a down side.... they was a lack of music around the pool in the afternoon....
They could use a few more chairs around the pool... but it was ok....
They could improve the bar service with another tender to help out.
They should allow men to wear long dress walking shorts to suppers!!!!!! All we spoke to about agreed!!!!!
I have pictures to share if someone needs to see.... by request only.

To sum it up... we would go to this resort AGAIN.
We enjoyed or stay very much.

We stayed at the Barcelo Huatulco Feb 8-Feb 22. This was our third time in Huatulco and first at the Barcelo. As usual, the weather in Huatulco did not disappoint. Hot and sunny everyday.
The resort, in general, is clean and comfortable in the public areas. The rooms, as has been mentioned in other reviews, are in need of a facelift of sorts.
ROOMS: We had a great room at the end of a wing with a beautiful view of both the pool area and the ocean. We were thrilled with this because we generally have garden view or worse (we did not upgrade for this room--just got lucky, I guess). There were a number of issues with the room, however. The shower water would go from hot to HOT to hot to HOT. The water in the sink would lose pressure soon after you turned it on and you would have to turn it up higher to maintain the desired pressure. We had to lift up on our fridge door to close it. The patio door would stick and the screen door track was loose and out of wack. The lighting in the bathroom was insufficient for my wife to put on her make-up. And finally, the bed was way too soft for our liking (most people usually complain that the beds are too hard --obviously a personal thing). When it comes down to it, all the issues were just minor inconveniences for the amount of time you spend in the room.
BARS/RESTAURANTS: They have the bars in place, but the execution was poor. With only the Lobby Bar open between 6pm and 10:30pm, things get rather jammed up and awfully warm inside. There is some sitting outside of the bar area, but very little unless you wanted to walk all the way down to the beach bar which closes at 6pm (but should be kept open until 10:30 to give guests another option---and one that is outdoors in the wonderful Huatulcoan night). Also, I don't believe that they have the strongest bartenders to begin with and they were often understaffed/unprepared. Too often the bartender would have to leave his bar to chase down ice or a particular booze from another bar or holding area, leaving guests standing there waiting for several minutes at a time. Very rarely did we feel like their priority #1 and we did our share of tipping and giving them chocolates (which they absolutely love). We only ate at the buffet as the ala carte menus didn't thrill us. The buffet generally came through with something that would satisfy us. Probably twice in two weeks did we say "oh, really?" and had to have an extra dessert or two.
ENTERTAINMENT: Daytime entertainment was a bit of an afterthought for them. They did a couple beach/ocean things a day, water aerobics, and beach volleyball pretty much everyday. They seldom did any pool activities. Two water volleyball games and one water polo game in two weeks, and the guests had to pretty much do all the recruting for the water polo and one of the water volleyball games because the staff just announced it and then sat in their hut hoping to not have to do anything. Just not a lot of fun around the pool area, although they generally had music going throughout the day which was nice. We only saw about 15 minutes of one evening show even though the talent looked pretty good. It just is that we've seen it all before and we just weren't that interested. They have the best, nicest theater that I've seen in all of my resort travels. So kudos to the resort for their nice set-up.
KIDS: They had a real nice pool area with short water slides for young kids.
OVERALL: We had a nice time with our Canadian and American friends and the resort played a part in that. It is a nice sized resort with enough lounge chairs both in the sun and the shade. The only real excursion we did was we went on a fishing trip with 8 folks from Minnesota on a 40' boat and had a great time catching "skipjack" and seeing HUNDREDS of dolphins on two or three occasions. It was AMAZING!!! Try to do that if you go. We heard similar results from other parties, so you would likely experience something similar.
