A low key pastorale peaceful setting where one can enjoy a meandering walk along the river framed by beautiful flowers. Explore the exotic varieties of fruits from South East Asia, Central and South America. During your visit one can swim in the Madalena River under the cascade of the La Campana waterfall. (Facilities provided for changing clothes) Favorite local foods are provided during your stay at no extra costs. A wonderful excursion away from the beach. Also a great example how a noble man with a dream can make a difference for the future generation of Mexico. Don and Johanna Maryland U.S.A. Feb. 2011

This is truly an excellent way to spend the day if you enjoy nature.

Booking: We had a little difficulty in determining how to book a tour. We tried to book through Sunwing and another local tour operator to no avail. They indicated that you needed a large group to book through them, but that wasn't our experience. We used the reservation link on the website and after a couple of e-mails Betty from Hagia Sofia made all the arrangements for us. Thanks so much to Betty. (Aside: It was 450 pesos for each of us.)

Transportation: Juan picked us and another couple up at our resort and took us the 45minute drive to Hagia Sofia. Juan also gave us a brief driving tour of Santa Maria on our way. Santa Maria is a wonderful old village that I recommend others check out if they get the opportunity.

Breakfast: We were greeted with some breakfast. We had a quesidilla made over a wood fire with Oaxacan cheese, red onion and fresh avocado. In addition there was fresh organic fruit and some fruit juices. It was amazing.

Walking tour: We went on a walking tour with Juan as our initial guide and then Armondo (the owner). The flowers and fauna were amazing. I'm not sure words or even photos can do the scene justice. Make sure you bring your camera.

Waterfall: If you wanted you could change into a swimsuit (in the very nice change rooms right at the waterfall site) and take a refreshing swim in the river. The small waterfall gave an excellent back massage.

Lunch: Believe it or nor, after the tour we were then served lunch. There was rice, beans, grilled prickly pear cactus (nopales), and a vegetable chicken mix, served with fresh tortillas. And again fresh fruit and juices. Make sure you go hungry, the food is incredible.

Washroom facilities: Modern (the M is for mujer or woman and the H is for hombre or man: this may be obvious to everyone else but it was confusing for us).

Armondo told us that the goal of the site is to promote knowledge and sustainability for the people of Oaxaca.

We have every intention of taking this tour again when we return to Huatulco so that we can see how Hagia Sofia has grown. This isn't your typical tour where you are on a strict proscribed timetable and someone is always trying to sell you something. This tour was about sharing their knowledge and dream for the future.

Wonderful place! Greeted by the manager and instantly refreshed with copious amounts of delicious fruit, juice, honey etc... most welcome after a 2 hour trip in the back of a pick-up from San Agustinillo. We were then treated to an excellent tour, guided by the manager himself, whose knowledge and passion for the place was obvious. Following that a quick dip in the glorious "cascada" and we were all set for the trip home. If you're in the vicinity... GO!

Absolutely amazing........ the people and all the work being put into this wonderful place. Anyone going to the Huatulco area, this is a must see. Bring a bathing suit, you don't want to miss the swim and the hidden cave. The food is fantastic. A special thank you to Armando and Betty, everything you have done is appreciated by all, keep up the good work.

When you come to Huatulco and do not visit Hagia Sophia, you have not been to Huatulco. This agro ecological development is the vision of Armando Canavati Nader and what a vision! His natural paradise overflows with gorgeous flowering plants, many, many varieties of trees, numerous fruit trees, and the smells from all of this permeates the air. One could sit forever and listen to the gently flowing river, watch the multi- hued butteries, or listen to the birds, especially the parrots, from the trees.

This heaven is only 30 minutes from Huatulco and an interesting drive through the "real" town of Huatulco. Armando serves his visitors delicious fruit juices, fruit, and quesadillas, made over a traditional wood burning oven, upon arrival, and then after the tour, a wonderful lunch of either fish or chicken and more quesadillas. This meal is also after an incredible swim in the clean river and a visit to the waterfalls which includes a cave behind the falls and another fall which acts as a soothing jacuzzi. The accommodations are first rate (bathrooms and the changing rooms at the waterfalls).

Armando has developed a paradise with such love and with utmost respect for nature. He truly knows the meaning of organic from his composting to his bees and honey. He proudly shared his fruit with us and his dream. What a fabulous day!

Reservations must be made a day in advance. Hagia Sofia has an office in Santa Cruz on Mitla 402, or contact them at [--].
