“GREAT HOTEL COLD POOLS”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2012

-Sunwing on time
-rep met immediately after customs
-bus left immediately for hotel
-bracelets given out on bus
-rooms assigned already just pick up key at front desk very quick
-had dinner waiting for us as late arrival
-5* hotel
-nice clean lobby and very large and spacious lots of seating 2 bars in area
-elevators quick only waited for a few minutes once in the week
-rooms spotlessly clean, clean bedding flat screen tv big closet, lots of drawer space
-no coffee maker in room
-lots of towels, shampoo, bath gel, hair dryer very large bathroom and spotlessly clean
-all rooms other than jacuzzi rooms are blue and white in colour scheme
-ALL ROOMS HAVE BALCONIES AND GREAT OCEAN VIEWS
-DO NOT PAY FOR OCEAN VIEW ROOMS can see ocean from lobby save your money we did not and felt ripped off by signature, sunwing and itravel2000
-there are no rooms on the opposite side of the beach only the hallways
-18th floor have narrower railing balconies all others have wider walled balconies
-fridge stocked with pepsi reg and diet, 7up soda water large and small water and beer
liquor dispenser in room free with tequila, gin, vodka and rum
-free in room safe
-no free wifi in room, but unlimited free in lobby and 2 designated free computers for 90 min/day
- lots of restaurant space
-wide variety of foods never got boring unless you eat a little of everything everyday
-lots of fruit, veg, cold cuts salads, soup, every type of cereal, nuts, breads, pastries, doughnuts eggs ordered to your liking bacon, sausage, roast beef(prime rib) ribs, pork chops, steak, hamburgers, hot dogs, fish massive shrimp, mexican food if you want of course, wine/beer anytime of day, cappuccino, latte, espresso, specialty teas, hot chocolate, toaster 6-7 types of juices smoothies, tons of different desserts and ice cream
on and on there was not one thing that I can think of food wise that they did not have
-food excellent I hate fruit, salad and had ice which is purified all week long and no problems and I have a sensitive stomach
-only went to steak restaurant a la care had rib eye tasted excellent went twice baked alaska for desert waiters run like crazy as they have only 1 hr to get service done not their fault
-we tried to get same waiter whenever we could JUAN CARLO young kid but man does he ever run around trying to please you cleaning up asap and could not do enough for us and this was even before he knew if he would get a tip or not
-friends told us asian a la carte is buffet and they wanted it to be a la carte
-staff exceptionally polite and hospitable they could not do enough for you anytime day/night
-many pools and towels even books to read and trade tons of chairs around the different pools and on the beach
-Ocean is cold and waves 3-4 ft on days, surfers there and you can walk the beach for hours it is so long, white sand and very soft some shells on beach for kids to collect but very clean beach good fishing too
-Pools at the resort are way too cold for our liking they say they are heated but not passed 80 degrees I don't think they say swim up bar pool is warmer but they also say that is because the drinkers never get out of the pool???
-swim up bar also has a section you can go to if you are not in the pool but do not stand on the sides of the bar you get overlooked lots of premium brands at all bars
-they don't get upset if you don't tip them, they serve you the same as everyone else not like Jamaica
-there are 2 beer/pop stations unmanned that you help yourself, there were bees at the one but they tried to keep it cleaned from the spilled pop that the bees liked
-you can take food from the restaurants to the poolside and there are people that come around with trolleys to clear up dishes and cups
-always cleaning washrooms around pool area and keep whole area very clean
-lots of palm trees and lush vegetation around pools
-kid land pool and play area is warmer apparently
-went to only one show and it was good but at the back there is a smoking section which is not great if you are a non smoker
-not that close to town but everyone was taking taxis and buses and said they felt safe
-I was nervous because mexico is supposed to be so dangerous and it was this hotel that had the girl from Calgary beaten up in the elevator so I was very worried
-surprisingly I was not nervous at all the place felt extremely safe, you could see a security guard patrolling on the weekends when the locals come but they were no bother,
-the locals on the beach only ask you once if you would like to buy something and never asked again
-there was para sailing and horse back riding available but they did not ask you also seadoos.
-did not see anyone use the free catamarans available but lots of surfing
-can pay $50 more to stay in your room longer on day of check out we did not and found the time went by extremely fast, they let us keep our towel keys and bracelets to eat they put our luggage all together in a room and provided showers for us if we wanted before leaving for the airport
-bus was prompt at 4pm for departure that was when they cut off the bracelets and we had to hand in a paper to let us out onto the bus
-very efficient and quick
-little strip mall about 5-10min left out of hotel
All in all I was extremely pleased with everything at the resort other than the cold pools so we did not get to swim all week would go back in a heartbeat if the pools were warm because it truly was a 5 STAR resort in my opinion and I stay in 5 star hotels all over the world. Could not get over the cleanliness of this resort they really work hard at it and of course it is only 2 years old
-if you don't mind refreshing pools then this is for you and the price was incredible
right now on itravel2000.com, belairtravel.com, redtag.ca they are about $635 plus tax which is a real steal actually we got it for a $100 less which was a real steal
hope this helps

Well i just returned from Mazatlan, on March 1st.This is my 20th time in Mazatlan and 1st time for the Riu.
Loved it...
check in was quick and easy..staff friendly.
rooms clean and ocean view.....dont upgrade as they all face the ocean..
The fridge was fully stocked with water, beer, pepsi, diet pepsi, and 7-up. and water
they come every second day to refill.
I put a dollar in the fridge for a tip and my fridge was overflowing with beer...
so treat them nice and they will treat you well too..
Maid always made us animals, flowers etc..again tipped her a dollar a day
at the end left her a basket of treats, bath and body works stuff etc plus a few extra dollars as a thanks...

Beach chairs we had plenty never had to fight for one...perhaps it was a bit quiet the week we went.
Beach bar was good, friendly staff great drinks... good music
They worked hard for us...
More people around the pools which again i thought were great..
The beach was awesome to walk on
Swimming there was chilly once you got in it took a bit..super wavy , the week we were they it was always a red flag and white...(jelly fish and caution)
Didnt see any jellyfish....but waves yes.

If you love to walk go to the end of the stip of beach near the rocks right of the hotel if looking at the beach
great place to eat there...also if you go up the road past this is a little stip of buildings which have a store and a few restaurants...eat there if you want a break from the Riu food,...i had an amazing waffle loaded with strawberries, ad whip cream or under 5.00
the coffee there was SO GOOD!!!!

Riu food was ok, sadly i think that the 3 restaurants Asian, Mexican and steak house..were ok...nothing to break your back trying to get in..
out of the 3 the best would be the asian..... the rest i thought were kinda bland, ribs over cooked..etc.
Food wise...i think that if your not a huge drinker or not at all
than save your money on all inclusive..i would stay in town closer to the golden zone....not way out...it is still cheap to eat there..
Family wise than do the Riu, all you can eat and drink with kids clubs etc
Desserts were rather bland look pretty but almost no sugar in them...
Ice cream was amazing..

If you want to wander and not feel way out than stay in the goldenzone...
i always stay at the Playa Mazatlan...so being at the RIu i felt way way out.
but you can catch the bus...for 7 pesos cheap
or if you walk out of the resort (just outside the gate) catch a pulmina for about 80 pesso to the goldenzone...if you catch it at the door of the hotel is about 130
Shopping go to the market in the heart of mazatlan...
my friends bought a huge water jug,6 glasses hand painted for 30.00 cnd
where last year in cancun they paid 10-12 a glass....cheap
barter till your hearts conent with them....

A must is the Cathedral .inside is spectacular....only a few blocks away.
Walk the malacon all the way to the goldenzone about an hour or so
stop along the way at any little bar etc for a drink of water or beer...they will be happy to see you.
Never once have i felt uneasy being there over all these years.
Safe i did feel.
The people of Mazatlan of warm and friendly, and if you give them a chance to know them you too will feel this...
Riu is great as is the Playa mazatlan...

Room Tip: we did have rooms side by side, with a door on the outside which was in the hall, than each room had...

Just back from a week at Riu, but first a few travel tips.
No bathroom before immigation and we had a 30 minute wait as there was a long line. Use bathroom on plane before getting off. As others have said coffee is bad, so bring some instant or go to the sports bar, they serve a pretty good cup of coffee. If you take the city tour there is no lunch stop so bring a snack. Avoid the Deer island tour if you are looking for good snorkeling, we never saw a fish. The pizza was more like pizza from the store not the excellent thin crust served else where in Mexico and the Caribean.
If you want to use the jacuzzi you have to book it and bring your own towel.
This was a good hotel and although food was similar night to night there was plenty of choice and everything tasted good..
We only ate at the Mexican ala carte, because lets face it if you live in Canada why would you eat steak in Mexico- have you seen their cows! The food was excellent and the tortia soup was amazing.
This hotel could have been in any urban centre, had a very modern urban feel, if that is what you like then you will enjoy the Riu. It was clean , service was excellent but it did not have the same feel as other places we have stayed in in that part of the world.
The ocean water is cold but fine once you get in, waves can be large so if you like a calm swimming beach ( which we don't) you wouldn't find the water appealing. The swim up bar pool is warmer than the other pools, so it was very pleasant to sit in and have a few drinks, especially after coming in out of the ocean.
No real complaints, pleasant stay and for the price it is quite a bargin. You can't have everything if you want a bargin. As were comparing our various all inclusives we decided we might be getting a bit picky when we decided that besides the coffee and the wine , the biggest complaint was the lack of sprinkles at the lunch ice cream bar:)

for half the year they rent out most of the hotel to locals from thurs to sunday.most of them were rude, partying 24 7, throwing up in the pools, the resuarants catered to them.the locals took over the pools, elevators, the sports bar.our first day our maid cleaned our room. the second she never showed up to clean the third day she robbed us. and from every day on she just took what ever she could from us in the room. we complained and filled reports but they never did a thing or changed the person from cleaning our room. two days before we left i got stung by a bee and i ran up to my room to take allergy meds and actually caught her fooling around in my room.other people as well.when u check out they only except canadian. EVERY ROOM IN THIS HOTEL IS OCEAN View

Room Tip: the fifth floor has an amazing room. just shifty maids. se would even hide our bras every day. weird...

My daughter and I went to this hotel Feb 21-28th 2012 and had a wonderful time. Check in was very organized and quick and the hotel is beautiful. Hotel and room was emaculate as staff are constantly cleaning. While visiting other resorts there has always been a shortage of lounge chairs on the beach and around the pool, not at this resort! There was lots of vacant chairs everywhere. The nightly shows were good if you like watching dancers, they were excellent dancers and very talented but after a couple of nights it would of been nice to see something else. This was the first time we went to a high rise hotel style and on the Pacific side of Mexico. I much rather prefer the bigger resorts that are spread out with max 3 story buildings they feel more tropical and I like walking the grounds. As for the Pacific side I didnt realize how windy it is and the days seem shorter. The water is very fast with some undertows and it doesnt have that pretty turquois color we love. It looked like we were just laying on the beach on Lake Ontario except that the waves were huge! The food was very good wih lots of selection and the staff were very friendly. All in all it is a beautiful hotel and very safe but we prefer the mayan riviera side of mexico.

Room Tip: All the rooms have beautiful ocean views, no need for an upgrade.

Pros:
- Good service and accommodating staff
- zip lining excursion offered with sun wings was fun but expensive ($75usd)
- got a room upgrade after we realized "beach front" room simply means we get to stay in floors 7-14. After expressing our concerns to the reception desk, they upgraded us to a new room where the tv wasn't broken and all the lights worked on the 22nd floor

Cons:
- Majority of visitors were locals
- TERRIBLE FOOD (same thing everyday) -- a la carte restaurants are just as bad if not worse. Above all else, do not go to the Asian restaurant except to try the deep fried ice-cream (delicious)
- Very little activities to do at the hotel
- There is no snorkeling and free activities like the hotel promos promised
- disco at the hotel is also full of locals and only play Mexican music despite our many requests to play at least one song our group requested to the dj
- got a 60min beachfront massage for $75usd. Was told by the spa receptionist we would get 20% off. After the massage, we were refused the discount and had no choice but to pay the full price

Tips:
- restaurant off the resort onthefar righthand side was crazy good and cheap. Had a full lobster meal for less than $20usd...however this was the location that the Toronto man was beaten last year
- the staff was very friendly and encourage you to leave the resort. It's worthwhile to see what's in mazatlan since resort is actually in a small town located outside of mazatlan ($10usd cab fare to get into the city--ps negotiate this rate with your driver before you get in)
- all rooms in the hotel face the ocean. Upgrading rooms mean to go up to higher floors.
- the hotel is built slanted to the ocean. Ensure you are located in the left wing since the right wing rooms face a deserted waterpark and sand (terrible)

Overall: pay more to stay at a better hotel.

Better yet, don't come to mazatlan Where a woman from Calgary was beaten in the riu elevator. I feel sick to my stomach that I rode those elevator just one month before.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade once you arrive.

We were there from the 7th february until 21st this was our 5th time there
as we have been going twice a year, at the time we were there it was reading week for a lot of places in western canada but there was nothing noticeable re noise or no chairs, a couple of "whoops" in the hall,if you have read all the reviews, you will have found they cover mostly everything. as far as we are concerned this is the best Riu we have stayed in.
we have been in the Mayan,Nyarit,Los Cabos
As for "Had a great time would not go back again, Ontario", that's too
bad,we always feel very safe there and they have put in more security cameras and beach guards. We took the bus to the Golden Zone and back, no trouble at all.
The Hotel is clean, comfortable, food is good, location to beach excellant, there are really no negatives to the Riu Emerald Bay and we look forward to returning, we would have booked for the \march break March 9th to 16th but no flights at that time from Toronto so we are going back to Los Cabos
We will be back to the Emerald Bay as soon as we can, I just hope they have put a make-up mirror in the bathroom by then and fluffier pillows, but it is still great without them Thanks Emerald Bay

Room Tip: we always go to the 5th floor around the middle to south side
