Just returned from 10 days at the Krystal in PV. It is a fairly good location in the hotel zone, within walking distance of the piers where a lot of day and evening trips depart/return from. Too far to walk to downtown but, hey, everyone should experience a couple of wild bus rides while you are there. First I will say that we have been to at least a dozen other All Inclusive resorts over the past few years, ranging from 5 star to 2 star. The Krystal should not even be rated as an all inclusive because I believe it was created to cater to their time share clientele. Their website is misleading and inaccurate. You should know what to expect.
PROS: Our room turned out to be a suite with a bar area, dining room, living area etc. We had not booked or asked for this but this is what we got. It was clean but the bed was VERY,VERY hard. Our travelling companions ended up with an adjoining room that was regular resort size but also clean. You may read about others complaining about the pools being divided up or something. I had never seen them before they were divided but they were just fine. There is a quieter one for kids etc. and an infinity pool where the adults can hang out. There is also a quiet pool away from the beach and the activities. Nice sun and shade for those who want to relax in relative quiet. You may also have read about the construction next door, yes it is there but is not very distracting. You can easily tune it out-I thought it was not an issue. The buffet, Las Velas restaurant, had good food although they did not vary the menu too much while we were there. If you were expecting a lot of North American cuisine you would be disappointed. A lot of Mexican dishes (hey were in Mexico). The staff there generally were very attentive and friendly. The only other restaurant on the property is Kamakura restaurant. This is the Japanese restaurant featuring sushi. The food and service was good. The fitness facility appeared be quite good (well attended anyway). The best experience at this entire resort is the massage. (We went twice). 75 minutes of a complete head to toe, front to back relaxing massage. I believe the regular price is $40 US but you may be able to get a discount, check with the front desk.
OK, that's about all the good I can say for this place. It really was not that bad so much as it was disappointing, and again it may have been my expectations were way different due to the various other trips that I had been on.
CONS: Aside from the buffet, which was mediocre at best, there was only one actual restaurant, the Kamakura Japanese restaurant. If you talk to the front desk they will tell you can go to several other restaurants either nearby or down town as part of their a la carte package. Sounds OK, but wait, you can only go to certain ones on certain days. By the time we found out about this option we missed out on a couple of choices. Oh well, snooze you lose. Some of the choices are "The Outback Steak House, Senor Frogs, Si Senor and the Blue Shrimp." These are the ones we ending up going to although there were a couple of more we missed. These are all fantastic restaurants in terms of food, atmosphere etc. When you tell them that you are from the Krystal resort you are allowed to order ONLY from a specific menu tailored to that resort. Usually you can choose from a soup, salad, hamburger and maybe one other item. I am not slamming these restaurants only the way the Krystal handles it. The food at all of these places is good. If you are in Vallarta, I would highly recommend the Blue Shrimp and bring an appetite. There is only one bar included with the all inclusive package and it is way out at the beach. We were fortunate (LOL) to be at the Krystal during spring break and you were lucky if you get close to the bar at any time as it was 3 deep of partying college kids. The drinks seemed to be watered down anyway.
There is a bar in the lounge but is not included with all inclusive. We had a $100 credit with our room as part of our package that we purchased from our travel agent. We thought, great, we can use this as we see fit, uh-uh. First we had to ask about it-then they gave us five $20 vouchers to use in specific area-such as telephone credit, mini bar credit. We had no say as how we could spend the $100. Generally the staff was all friendly and helpful but they seem to be awfully disorganized. Again, this resort seems to cater to time-share customers. If you are thinking of an all-inclusive stay, look somewhere else.

Arrived at Krystal March 12th for a week vacation in the sun.
As soon as we arrived we were told by our tour representative to be aware of the timeshare salespeople, as they were very pushy at Krystal. We didn't find that at all, but were more than annoyed by the quantity of spring breakers that were loud, rude, and taking up most of the pool space close to the beach and hogging the bar.
There was constant construction on the north beachfront area while we were there. This (in addition to the party-minded spring breakers) limited the amount of relaxing time that could be had by the pool or on the front beach. It looks as though the construction will continue for the year.
Staff was nice in general, though when we had a complaint or required something (didn't get our daily water bottles, maid service or towels) it took a minimum of two calls to the front desk and a half-hour wait. The first night on the resort, there were very noisy rooms all around us (3:00 in the morning parties), and we asked to change rooms. Were told that they didn't have another room available, and it may not make a difference to the noise factor.

Even though we tried to make the dress-code for the restaurants requiring reservations (pants and shoes), we didn't feel it was appreciated or even regarded, as many people showed up straight from the pool, some without shirts on. The Japanese restaurant in the courtyard is nice and staff was very good, the other restaurants were okay at best.

I would not recommend this hotel, especially in late Feb through March to avoid the extra annoyance of spring breakers.

Arrived at the Krystal on Friday, March 2nd for a two week vacation using an RCI exchange. There were four people in our party so we exchanged for a two bedroom, 2 bathroom villa. 1) When we arrived our check-in went well with little wait. The staff were very friendly and helpful and answered all of our questions. The villa was very nice with a small patio off of the living room with our own pool. The pool was cleaned every day and we made good use of it. The villa could have used a few more cooking utensils, but we got by. We cooked many of our meals in the villa. The maid service was the best. All of the towels and wash cloths that we needed. And it was not because of the tipping, because it was added on to your bill. It was alot less then we would have left, so we gave her a little more at the end of our stay. Walmart was close by to buy groceries and bus stop was right out front. The airport was less than 10 minutes away. There was a small plaza next to the Krystal with a few restaurants, and other stores along with a casino. We really enjoyed staying at the Krystal and hope to go back soon.

When we arrived in our room, it smelled, was in awful condition. My husband complained and Javiar upgraded us to a much nicer room:( That was a good experience but....the swim up bars are gone, only 3 restaurants, one of which is the only place to eat breakfast. The staff are amazing and very friendly. Will never go again during spring break, rude, arrogant college kids bombarded the resort. We made the best of our vacation anyway as we met a wonderful couple from Colorado to hang out with.

Room Tip: stay at a different resort

We have stayed at the Krystal in the past, and since its construction, its hard to go back. The area that wse always hung out at, the swimup bar, is gone. there is no more sitting on the beach at the bar watching the waves. The beach area seems so disconnected from the property and very small.

Room Tip: The rooms arent as clean as I would prefer

Thank-you for the review of Krystal Hotels from the perspective of a long-standing member. As you mentioned in your review, we recently redesigned the hotel pool and some other renovations around the hotel to bring it to a more modern and stylish look. Some of the redesigns are very different from what they replaced, and as always big changes take some getting used to - for some of our guests who were expecting familiarity it was a big surprise.
It took us staff-members a bit to get used to as well, but we now absolutely LOVE the new look and feel to the hotel. While the swim-up bar may not exist anymore, our pool-side waiters will be more than happy to take your order and bring your drinks to the side of the pool for you.
Thanks again for the review - we look forward to the next visit to Krystal Hotels for you and your friends and/or family.
